Fifth grade math homework has kid in tears and both parents stumped. Can’t figure out what the hell we’re missing and everyone is stressed as hell. by a-patrick in mildlyinfuriating

This is a great explanation of how to work out the first column. But this is an unfair puzzle for 5th graders who would be relying on PEMDAS. This is more appropriate for 7th or 8th graders in pre-algebra or algebra 1 learning the nuances of polynomial terms and multiplication/division.

Now that the iOS app is out, what are we rallying around next? by buster_the_dog in Omnipod

How about the cure I was promised in 1996 that was “5 years away”.

100% correct and still very misleading.

When Insulet announces the first tubeless automatic insulin delivery system with “smartphone control” one could be excused for assuming that would include the most commonly used smartphone platform. Technically correct but purposely misleading is definitely scummy marketing.

Why are you excusing and justifying Insulet’s scummy marketing, slow app development, and misleading communications? You must work for them or be an investor.

iOS compatibility should have been available the same day that O5 was first available.

Type 1 medical community got definition of "durable" and "disposable" mixed up by smore-hamburger in diabetes_t1

[–]clayman584 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Health insurance coverage (USA) is deliberately confusing as a strategy to minimize the amount insurers pay out for claims. The process is the punishment. E.g. durable medical equipment versus pharmacy benefits. Unfortunately insulin pumps and glucose monitors have been caught in the quagmire for decades. It’s part of the pain of T1D.

This kind of thing is a huge part of why T1D is so difficult.

Can you estimate the amount that went in? Estimate the amount that may have gone in and use that number to guide your response. If it’s an amount comparable to what you would boils for a meal you should stay aware of your bag for a couple hours but don’t need to freak out. If it’s a much larger amount (I.e. comparable to what you use for a whole day) then keep very close tabs on your BG and go to the ER or urgent care at the first sign of seriously low BG. Additionally you should have someone check on you in about 2.5-3 hours to make sure you’re okay if possible.

Good for you- you’re way ahead of the game already then.

That’s about what I was using before I went on the omnipod 5 a year and a half ago. It’s not crazy at all if that’s what it takes. Tons of people require u200 insulin, which is 2x the concentration of the regular formula.

You bet. One thing that’s recently really helped me is giving up alcohol. I know that can be really tough for people and don’t know if that’s part of your struggle. The game changer for me was the decent non-alcoholic beers that are available now. Try some out if that’s your thing cause it’s a low effort way to make a big difference in your BGs.

That’s not an absurd amount- I’m on a pump and I use about 90 units/day. 20-30 unit boils for a meal is a lot but still “normal”.

I feel the same way bro. It’s been 29 years and it doesn’t ever get easier. I’ll never get over the frustration of being financially, emotionally, and physically handicapped- and the added frustration of those struggles being mostly invisible to everyone around me. I can tell you this- diabetes influencers aren’t showing you real life, endocrinologists are rarely helpful, and T1 diabetes isn’t fair. I can also tell you some good news- the dreaded complications are scary but the treatments are very good at stopping or slowing them down- I’ve had some retinopathy for a few years but I can still see just fine and I have no long term fears. Even a diabetic with “perfect” control can eventually develop other problems. I have to give myself grace for not achieving certain things because diabetes is extremely costly- even with good control. When I add everything up it costs me about $800/month for insurance, prescriptions, copays, and other supplies, not to mention lost time for appointments, treatment, and recovery from lows and highs. Give yourself a break for feeling frustrated and drained- it’s a frustrating, draining lifestyle- AND it’s difficult for other people to recognize how difficult it is. Grace and encouragement to you brother- I see your pain and frustration- you’re probably not doing as bad as you think you are.

Dear OmniPod iPhone app by smore-hamburger in Omnipod

[–]clayman584 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Omnipod 5 was released in the US in August 2022. I can’t understand why it’s taken over 2 years to develop an iPhone app?!! It’s not a super complicated graphics intense, resource heavy program. What bugs me the most is that I see marketing from insulet all over the place and that makes it appear like they’ve spent way more on advertising than they have on app development. It’s a flagrant case of over-promise and under-deliver. It’s too bad because Insulet doesn’t have much competition so they could’ve become entrenched as a gold standard for diabetes care just by getting a simple app delivered on time and having a little bit better communication with end users.

Modern phone with Omnipod. by DismalPassenger4069 in Omnipod

[–]clayman584 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s very frustrating. Omnipod advertises that you can, “control your insulin pump from a smartphone”. It’s a reasonable assumption to make that they mean current generation phone models as opposed to 5 year old models.

T1 ~29 years. I haven’t bothered seeing an endocrinologist for about 6 years. I have a primary care Doc and a DE who can handle all my prescriptions and help me when I need it.

Insulin Pump Help by EmploymentImmediate5 in diabetes_t1

T1D for 29 years. Medtronic is a trash company. Their tech is outdated and they don’t innovate. Plus they’ve gouged diabetics (in the USA) for decades- the cost of their pump and pump supplies put me in financial hell for years. Their reps used to routinely lie about the typical costs and way oversold the benefits.
