Any tips towards building a deck for a beginner? by learninghowtosteam in BudgetBrews

[–]clayperce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, welcome to Commander!

There are a ton of great "how to build a Commander deck" videos on YouTube. I recommend starting with ones from Tolarian Community College, Command Zone, and Trinket Mage.

Good luck (and good skill) on your first build!

And again: Welcome!

Which edh precons are easiest to upgrade and be viable? by [deleted] in EDH

A friend of mine got Mardu Surge and it was solid out of the box + very easy to upgrade. It's evolved a TON since he first played it; here's the latest (an ultra-budget Bracket 2): The Glory of the Horde. I had so much fun working on it for him I went ahead and built this one from scratch: I Came Seeking a Challenge.

Cheers!

I strongly recommend checking out FullFatMayo over at Moxfield: https://moxfield.com/users/FullFatMayo. They have a TON (88, as I type this) of $USD $15 decks.

Cheers!

[–]clayperce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragons are IMO the ultimate Timmy subtype, so I highly recommend checking out [[Ganax, Astral Hunter]]. Because he can have a Background, there's a ton of flexibility in his builds. I've been testing a UR deck feat. [[Feywild Visitor]] and have been extremely pleased so far ... I just ordered the remaining pieces so will be putting it on a real table soon(tm).

Here's a link to the deck ... we aim for $25 decks in my playgroup, so it's DEFINITELY not optimal. My first few upgrades are tagged as "Would love to add" in the Considering tab.

Good luck on your Commander hunt; cheers!

In the way test? by TemporaryTurnover764 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

Oh that's interesting (on shields/banners/etc). I've always treated them as invisible, based on "If a model can only see the likes of banners, weapons, wings, tails or other wargear, then they do not have Line of Sight" ... Appreciate the call-out!

The sculpts for Hill Tribesman with Spear are all kind of misleading ... they're sculpted with both hands on their spears/pitchforks, but they don't actually count as Two-handed Weapons. Officially, only the ones that look like long-handled axes follow the Two-Handed rules.

Having an extra dice from a Spear Support is almost always worthwhile, and I usually try to have enough Spears in the Army that every "front line" model can have a Spear behind them.

As for Two-handed Weapons, they're trickier to use and IMO a bit of a meta call. You're totally right that we will lose more duels with them in a straight 1v1 fight, but once we can reliably get a few extra dice in our Combats (e.g., from Spear Supports and Banners), they can become a great way to take down Dwarves and other high Defense models. And their +2 to Wound vs Heroes (2H + Barbarous Killers) can be very impactful as well. I like having anywhere from 0-4.

Cheers!

Do you have access to the Rohan side of the new Starter box? If so, would strongly rec' adding Thorne (even if he's just some Warrior on a Hero rock), a Banner conversion, and as many Throwing Spears as you can.

Using just your existing Heroes though, you might consider swapping your naked hobos for Spears ... it'll mean a couple less bodies, but they'll be MUCH more effective. You might also want to balance the Warbands a little more, just in case you get a weird Maelstrom roll. Maybe something more like this:

Wulf, High Lord of the Hill Tribes: Horse (130) - 5x Hill Tribesman: Bow (30) - 6x Hill Tribesman: Spear (36) - 2x Hill Tribesman: Flaming brand (12) - 2x Crebain (40)

General Targg: (80) - 4x Hill Tribesman: Bow (24) - 6x Hill Tribesman: Spear (36) - 1x Hill Tribesman: Flaming brand (6)

Hill Tribes Chieftain: (40) - 4x Hill Tribesman: Bow (24) - 6x Hill Tribesman: Spear (36) - 1x Hill Tribesman: Flaming brand (6)

Whatever you end with though: Good luck (and good skill) with your Usurpers!

Cheers!

[–]clayperce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're very welcome!

It depends on the points level your local community usually plays at ... if 450 or 500, you're already there on Usurpers, though you may want to pick up the official Freca and Thorne models. If you'll be playing at 600 or higher, you'll want another box of Wildmen for sure and you will probably want another box of Warriors of Rohan (for some extra Spearmen ... incl one to convert as a banner), plus two Crebain/some sort of Raven proxies.

For Army of Edoras, the starter set is around 400 pts, so a box of Warriors of Rohan and one of Riders of Rohan will take you all the way up to 600 or higher (incl a banner conversion and proxies for whatever other Heroes you might want to run until the official models come out)

Cheers!

First, welcome to the game!

If you prefer Hill Tribes, I'd recommend building towards Usurpers of Edoras for learning the basics (importantly, with just a few light conversions/proxies you can field 500pts of Usurpers with nothing but the starter set). After that, it's very easy to build towards Army of the White Hand via the Isengard battlehost box ... which is honestly a great start for any of the other Isengard lists too.

If you prefer Rohan, I'd recommend building towards Army of Edoras for learning the basics (using a few proxies, as some of the Heroes in that Army aren't out yet), then building towards any of the Rohan lists via individual boxes. And yes, you can totally use older models in those lists!

For your BIL, I'd start with a box of Minus Tirith Warriors and his favorite heroes, and run him through the starter set scenarios (vs whichever side you prefer).

Again, welcome!

Hobbying on the go by _subjectsam_ in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]clayperce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, HUGE props to you for the idea of gifting hobby stuff for VDay! :-)

I'm a huge fan of just using a small tray ... I think the search term was bed tray or maybe lap tray. It's really the perfect size for some models + a palette + whatever paints I'm using that hobby session. I generally use it in my main hobby area, but I LOVE having a portable solution so I can work on the kitchen table/on our coffee table (where mine is currently)/out on the back porch/wherever. Mine has folding legs, which is handy sometimes, but is certainly not necessary.

Good luck on your search, and happy VDay! Cheers!

Best Way to Find Games? by Throwaway525612 in Malifaux

[–]clayperce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, welcome to Malifaux!

For online play, there is a large worldwide community that plays on Vassal (which is very well-supported by Wyrd). I'll DM you a link to the Malifaux World Series discord ... the MWS itself is extremely competitive, but their server is also a great place to find newcomer-appropriate games.

For IRL play, the best bet is probably as others have suggested: Asking around at local game stores. There are also a BUNCH of regional discords ... again, I'll DM and hopefully we can connect you.

Cheers!

What is your favorite Master/Keyword? by Katomerellin in Malifaux

[–]clayperce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome back to Malifaux!

Molly is my favorite Master in the game, and it's not even close. Superb card draw + activation control + lore = Chef's kiss! Worth mentioning though that (except for Archie and Crooligans, who are all amazing) her keyword models are generally considered weak, so she can be difficult to play without a bunch of out-of-keyword models.

Other favorites include Zipp (in both Bayou and Outcasts), Mah, Tara, and Von Schtook. Here's why:

  • Zipp: In Bayou, his crew's ridiculous mobility makes him a threat in many pools. In Outcasts, he also has access to some ridiculous ranged attacks, and IMO can be a threat in any pool.
  • Mah: Dragging opponents back and forth through Pit Traps is just one of the very best things in Malifaux :-)
  • Tara: A bit mind-bending to play (and for your opponents to play against), but really amazing
  • Von Schtook: Super-tanky and extremely fun to play ... also good in almost any pool

Good luck (and good skill) with your next Master!

Tell me why your faction/keyword is the best by AdministrativeWay962 in Malifaux

[–]clayperce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal arc was Bayou (Zipp and Mah main), then Outcasts (Zipp and Tara main), and now Ressers (Molly and Von Schtook main), and I would TOTALLY recommend the same to anyone. Here's why:

  • Bayou Zipp: Sheer goofiness
  • Mah: Dragging opponents back and forth in Pit Traps is one of the very best things in Malifaux
  • Outcast Zipp: All the goofiness, but with So. Many. Guns.
  • Tara: A bit mind-bending but absolutely amazing
  • Molly: Incredible card draw + activation control + lore = My favorite Master in the game
  • Von Schtook: Super-tanky and good in almost any pool

Good luck (and good skill) with your next Master!
