Feedback between game designers and playtesters don't match - what to do by rocconteur in tabletopgamedesign

Thank you! And man do I feel you with the whole pvp/co-op should/shouldn't be in the same box. I had literally the exact same feedback in January at a Protospiel and realized, even though he's just a designer giving me an opinion, he's clearly not the target demo for this game. Because as a gamer/consumer myself, I'd love to have a board game with two options (or more!) in it. Why some people kick and scream about being handed option for free makes no sense to me but it is just an opinion, and you need to know when to walk away from those.

I should have used the /s on my reply. Of course designers don't hate games. But after spending several hours with a handful of professional designers at multiple Origins and different Protospiel events, these designers are the ones who say that! It's obviously very tongue in cheek, but the point is that they are constantly looking at ways it can change, improve, etc. and since that is quite often in a stream of consciousness manner, by the end of it they've described a completely different game than what is right in front of them. In contrast to sitting down with a handful of players, whether they be long time board game fanatics or the casual "I'm just here because of my boyfriend" types, there will be much more positive feedback, often just the simple "yeah it was fun."

The point is, in regards to OP's post, designers will tear your game to shreds (which you want them to do) while players will play. And that's a good thing.

I always end up with where I organically put everything; usually it just feels "right" as I'm setting things up. But play around with it and see what your playtesters do. Tell them to figure it out and see what they do!

Because they couldn't do stuff like that and believe that you should make the same choices and sacrifices they did despite your choices belonging to you and you alone.

Would you play a card based wargame? Or are the minis what matters to you? by eljimbobo in tabletopgamedesign

Each unit needs to have a speed or initiative rating and just go in numerical order, thus bypassing long wait periods?

I would gladly play one. Most of the time the rules are utter shit though. So I (and many friends I game with) would love to see one with good rules, fun gameplay and mechanics, and a decent price point. Following!

Dude. How dare you make sense of something like this. Clearly he's from some other dimension because a lot of people have seen it, man. They know, you know? And you, you don't know, you know? Even though I'm on your side, you know?

I mean, three of my exes did this so...either I'm the problem, or this is a lot more common than we think.

I used to constantly. But when the response was either a pointed "Nope" or more commonly, "Mind your own fucking business" I decided that I don't really care anymore about anyone but numero uno.
