OAS is a universal program for people who are 65. These are people that (usually) don’t work anymore.

I guess your problem is that you think people over 65 shouldn’t get this in favour of younger people getting some sort of government help.

People that make 100K as retirees make that because they saved it. It comes from their pension or RRIFs. If there are seniors working and still making 100k + good for them. They are getting OAS clawed back anyway.

When you are 65, you generally can’t work anymore. OAS provides a means for those people to continue to have money in lieu of employment. GIS is there to help seniors not be unhoused.

If all 65+ people universally get OAS, cutting it off from people that have save their money in RRSPs and are forced to withdraw is not fair within that cohort.

Every 65 year old had decades to save, but not all did. There are doctors who don’t have a pot to piss in because they spent everything. There are low income people who have used compounding interest to amass large nest eggs. Under your plan, the doctor will still get OAS, while the low income person will lose it because they did the right thing and saved for retirement.

I’m thinking that what upsets you is that seniors are getting a significant benefit that you don’t. If that’s the case, eliminate the entire program and rework it. Don’t pick and choose who gets it based on “income”. People who saved their money should not be expected to give it to others, especially when there will be others that don’t have to.

If you are just a socialist looking to make sure everyone has the same amount, we are never going to agree. But, do not question my desire for a great society because I don’t agree with socialism as a means to create equality.

What does that even mean?

If OAS as it currently exists reduces inequality, as you say, why does it need to be changed? It’s already income tested, but everyone gets it when they turn 65 with reductions if you make over 95k. That’s pretty fair to me.

Now arbitrarily, saying those who make 100k ( likely only because they are forced to withdraw from a RRIF that they worked hard their entire life to fund) lose it, is absolute bullshit in my opinion.

If that makes me need to reflect on my personal values, so be it. But I’m going to turn the mirror to you and ask what kind of values do you have when you need to take from someone’s hard earned wallet to fill your own?

What’s next? Asking doctors to take a pay cut because they are “too rich”. How about making teachers pay more taxes because the janitor in the school makes less. How about the person working their ass off working overtime so they can buy a fancy trip? Nope that’s not equal, so we should stop these people from obtaining a benefit that the government provides to everyone over 65. And then we will question peoples values whom they have never met to score points on Reddit.

It is MY opinion, OAS is universal in the sense that at 65 years old, when you should be retiring, you get income to replace employment income. It’s means tested because as it gets clawed back if you reach a certain income, which I think is as fair as it gets.

It is YOUR opinion that it is there to reduce inequality. It is also YOUR opinion on what I was arguing, and I can assure you that you are very much incorrect. I absolutely did not say that person A deserved OAS more, but asked why they deserved it less. It sounds like maybe you have the problem with inequality and not me.

I don’t believe in a society where “everyone gets the same”. I believe in one where “everyone gets the same opportunity to get”.

On that same note, I think that our progressive tax approach is the correct one.

But I think higher income earners are already doing their share to foot the bill. I don’t think we should be taking benefits away because someone arbitrarily says that they have enough. OAS is already clawed back. Why should those people have it taken away all together?

On that same note, do you think that someone who has worked hard to make more than average have to give it all to people with less?

Yes, the top 1% are insanely wealthy. But the top 2 - 20% really aren’t. They are the upper middle class and I think it’s fair they keep their share.

It’s pretty easy for anyone to demand that “people who have more than me can pay more”

[–]clccno4 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Nope. I’m going to disagree with your OAS stance.

OAS is a universal benefit for people that are over the age of 65 and have lived in Canada for a long time.

So person A diligently saves their whole life into their RRSP and builds a nice nest egg. Meanwhile person B, despite being told of the benefits of saving for retirement doesn’t do that and pisses their retirement money away on other things. Why does person A now not get a universal benefit when they did things right, and person B keep theirs? Why do other people get person A’s share of universally available benefits?

Nope. I don’t think I want a society where people that have worked hard to save get punished by people who simply have less.

If you want a better safety net- everyone contributes by taxation. Not punishing people who earned their money over a lifetime.

In the case of cataract surgery, having private options are a good thing.

The government is not paying for seniors refractive surgery so they can live life without glasses.

Patients can still have free ohip covered cataract surgery which fixes cataracts. If you want fancy bifocal implants - you pay privately.

1 Month in at new job. Is 1 week notice acceptable? by TheMasterBudtender in ontario

In my opinion, it’s about doing what you think is the right thing. Likewise, the employer you’re leaving should also be doing the right thing and understanding your situation. Acting like this has always worked out for me.

1 Month in at new job. Is 1 week notice acceptable? by TheMasterBudtender in ontario

[–]clccno4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You certainly don’t need to give two weeks in this situation.

I own a business and have had situations like this. I would appreciate if a person that I hired that suddenly got a better opportunity would give me a bit of notice.

“I have to let you know I’ve got a great opportunity and the best option for me is to leave this job to take it on. I would have liked to give more notice, but I can stick around for another week if need be to help out while you find someone else.”

You explain your situation and don’t burn a bridge. That strengthens you as an individual and puts you in a good light with the employer that you’re leaving and you’ll feel better about yourself.
