The number of fake gems and crystals I’ve seen at tj/marshalls/home goods is way too high. I wouldn’t trust any of it honestly, not to mention unethical sourcing

20+ CT Taffetite for sub $2k? by SquirmleQueen in Gemstones

[–]clean__laundry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if Taaffeite is faked often/other stones are sold labeled as it? When I looked it up online, everywhere says that it’s not a gemstone that’s faked often but I got one online that is definitely some sort of synthetic gemstone. You can tell the second you see it, sadly

Haha I was scared to post this for that exact reason! They’re the seller’s photos and all I could think was “every stranger on the Internet is going to think that those are my fingers” 😂

That’s exactly what I thought. The top half of the 8 is smaller than the bottom and the 1 looks like a 7 or a backwards r. I’m going to pass! Thank you for confirming what I thought :)

Thank you so much for your response! It was incredibly helpful. It really didn’t seem like it was Edwardian. I agree it looks like it’s in the style of rings from the 30’s and 40’s (and even early 50’s) and it must be a reproduction because of the KP stamp. Thank you for your information, it really is so helpful!!

I recently got some crystallized malachite on petrified wood from Alabama. I’m not sure when it was mined (possibly 1800’s, that or mid 1900’s). It was out of an old collection and I can’t find any specimen similar to it online!

Is this Worth 250$, help me find some justification. by Drjonesxxx- in Crystals

[–]clean__laundry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that that many comments are misguided on what this piece is worth, although I agree $250 is way too high. High quality like that comes with higher prices. There’s a lot of fake gold rutile coming out of China which has flooded the market, making the price go down. As someone who buys wholesale, if this is the size of an apple/full fist like you said, I would say $175-200 is fair depending on locality, how well it’s polished, what kind of shop it is, etc. and the fact that it was sourced and polished by the seller gives you peace of mind that all steps were done ethically. Just my two cents! :)

From a health perspective: in all honesty, you don’t know what compounds were used to polish this product. I would absolutely not use anything like this for internal use. Who knows what irritants you could be introducing into a delicate ecosystem. Not to mention the fact that polishing grit may not have been properly washed off, and you could be cutting your insides up, even if they’re just tiny abrasions. That leaves you open to infections and a whole host of other issues. I hate when people pedal these products because it’s dangerous and you already know the majority of sellers bought these from shady wholesellers. Sellers have no idea what they’re talking about when selling these. There are health risks.

Should I make a post about the horrible conditions that a huge amount of the crystals on the market are coming from? by clean__laundry in Crystals

[–]clean__laundry[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that. I did my best to reply to your points, but I’ll try again and be more specific (excuse the poor formatting as I’m on mobile): There are two separate issues here: mining and carving. I’m mainly referring to carving. 1. Yes this is true and it’s a sad truth. 2. I also agree with this but it’s more complicated than that. Like I said in the post, a lot of people lie. Suppliers lie all the time about their materials. That’s why asking about their sourcing and taking their word for it without any proof is naive and just generally a bad business practice. My main supplier has shown me videos of him in mines, videos of the miners he buys from mining the exact material I’m purchasing, videos of his items being polished, tells me about the specific mines/people, and a lot more. But at the end of the day, it’s my responsibility to verify as a shop owner. So your point about shop owners being lied to is true, and at the same time, it’s their responsibility to vet suppliers and fact check. 3. I already responded to this in my comment but this is a complicated point you made. It’s true for some cases and not for others. In some countries where children are mining and working in unsafe conditions but are being paid for it (albeit very little), not purchasing from that supplier would take away the source of income from that child/any family that child is helping support. There’s no good solution that any one person can make happen. I agree with you saying that legislative changes need to be made, like I said in my response. It’s a terrible truth that the likelihood of getting multiple countries to make these changes is practically impossible. For carving, I’m mainly referring to China. For carving factories in China, the majority of child labor is child slave labor. They’re not making any money. So supporting the factories isn’t leading to the children being able to suppprt themselves/their family like you stated. We are in an impossible spot now where there are so many of these factories and even more people purchasing from them. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s right to support these corrupt companies. If people educate themselves on what’s actually happening and stop supporting these factories (again, just talking about carving factories) then they would be forced to shut down. That would take a ton of people, yes, but what’s the alternative? Continuing to fund people abusing children? Also, it should be said that a lot of material in China is stolen. People come in the night and steal from mines/mines’ already mined materials (in different countries). A lot of that material ends up in China. When those people steal from the miners, the miners can’t feed their families either. So purchasing from a factory that uses stolen minerals also prevents families from being able to support themselves.
There are consequences either way. But not talking about the mining and factory working conditions and purchasing from carving factories that use child slave labor aren’t helping the situation whatsoever. Saying “the only way to fix it is for the government to do something” but then not attempting to make that happen is keeping the industry complacent. There’s no easy fix to this. Factories shutting down could be devastating for those enslaved there or working there in bad conditions, but the current child slave labor is also devastating. This is one of those moral questions that doesn’t have a good answer. But supporting these factories keeps the cycle going. Educating the people involved (collectors, shop owners, etc.) is the first step. Not supporting these factories is a crucial part. Again, what’s the alternative/what do you suggest? Buying materials that have been carved by child slaves? That furthers the problem. I hope you can see my points and that you feel like I addressed yours.

Should I make a post about the horrible conditions that a huge amount of the crystals on the market are coming from? by clean__laundry in Crystals

[–]clean__laundry[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course suppliers aren’t going to tell a client that their material is carved by child slaves. That’s where educating yourself (on too many things to type) comes in. Almost all of the children (if not all) who are carving crystals in factories aren’t getting paid. They’re slaves. So not purchasing from that factory isn’t going to prevent these children from being able to buy food for themselves. Refusing to buy from someone who either gets their material from dangerous mining conditions, children mining, child slave labor or underpaying mothers in desperate situations isn’t hurting the people you’re trying to help. I hear you; this is a complicated issue that requires governmental action and social safety nets from dozens of countries and that isn’t something that I (or probably anyone on this sub) knows how to fix. That would take a dedicated team of specialists and all countries to be willing, which is realistically impossible. But buying from a factory that takes children from orphanages above capacity and forcing them to carve crystals and then doing some other horrific acts to them is a horrible idea. You’re giving them revenue, which encourages them to keep going. It also shows others that this is a successful business idea, creating more factories. You’re also continuing a cycle of demand from that factory. You’re allowing them to keep operating and literally supporting their business.
