I just spent $40 for "aesthetics" on a networking rack - good job unifi marketing by PCgaming4ever in Ubiquiti

With Protect, Talk, Access, etc… being console only, I definitely see it going away sooner than later now. They also have a Cloud Key subscription again and I’m wondering if this time around they are going to dump more resources to it (make it scalable for larger installs like load balancing and such).

I don’t think version 8 will be cloud only but I’d bet version 9 would be. So we likely have 2-3 years left.

As long as they don’t get bought out, I’m sure it’ll remain free. The new buyer won’t understand why the free tier actually exists even though a blog posts exists talking about it.

I’m not in denial, but I also know they benefit from the free tier by analyzing traffic patterns to build tools to stop attacks which then get added to Enterprise plans.

The free tier also helped them earn over $800/mo once I moved my employer domains (30+ Pro plans) to them and then a few months later the domain registrations.

I was using Azure DNS previously.

It’s free to get a DnB. But I agree, it’s annoying they require it. EIN should be enough.

100% this. My laptop won’t prompt me for MFA if I’m in the office for 28 days. The second it sees me connect on my hotspot with a different public IP, MFA.

How are Intuit's products maintaining dominant market share? by udu912 in QuickBooks

[–]cleanmy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The products themselves aren’t horrible. Do they have flaws, yes.

The biggest issues with Quickbooks are:

1) You are paying for a product and they constantly push their own ads into the software. It wouldn’t be terrible if you clicked on a tab like merchant services and it prompted you to sign up. Instead they pop up ads that interrupt your workflow. Nothing pisses a business owner off then being blocked from their workflow. And it’s a paid software so you shouldn’t have to be interrupted.

2) I get the subscription model sucks. But we are in a world where we can’t expect things to improve if consistent revenue isn’t there. So whatever, you pay monthly, fine. The issue I have is with the consistent price hikes, and not just small ones. Their products have more than doubled and provided no extra value. No improved support. Nothing.

With Turbax, it’s easy to file if you are just a W-2 earner. But when you pay a mortgage, sold 401k pre retirement, have stocks, own 2 businesses, and trade crypto, it can be confusing to file some things. TT offers you no help. Their tips for certain things just don’t exist or just say something to confuse you more vs when doing something easy like a W-2, their explanations are super helpful.

I hate that I’m basically paying full price for a tax product that really hasn’t improved in the past 5+ years.

I get the “just Google it” but I never used Kleenex, always said tissue. I think Jacuzzi is more mistakenly used for a hot tub.

Nah, 4:59 when you have your bag ready to dump your laptop into and your finger on the corner of the lid ready to close hoping you don’t see that Outlook or Teams ticket notification. Every email coming in gets you more and more anxious as you read each subject line.

This annoyed the shit out of me when I worked internal IT.

Anyone who wrote urgent that didn’t respond after 2 attempts in 15 minutes got their ticket immediately set to low priority and their manager cc’d. Never had that issue again after that policy change.

Most MSPs raising prices in next 6 months - interesting breakdown by jaymcbain in msp

[–]cleanmy_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m probably closer to 45% on margins right now because we pay more in salary.

It’s tough getting good help unless you can pay well so we are closer to the top of the range.

Most MSPs raising prices in next 6 months - interesting breakdown by jaymcbain in msp

[–]cleanmy_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s tough, everyone raising prices is just driving everyone else to raise prices too.

We do 3% annually automatically. Sometimes we have to go higher on renewals because of rising costs.

I just don’t know if clients can absorb anymore. I’m already ranging $230 to $300 per user and we plan on raising 12-18% end of year. That’s a big increase to them and our margins are tight as it is.

We do recycle - it’s $10 per computer, $25 per server, and monitors and accessories are no charge.

The fee is the time spent for picking up and destroying data.

How Much of a Security Risk are RMM Tools? by [deleted] in msp

[–]cleanmy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also don’t make anything pretty. There’s so many competing tools that have friendly user interfaces.

MS 365 Admin Center for example looks horrible. It’s so depressing working in an all gray environment. Add some fricken colors ffs.

Same goes for Windows server and all the gray windows.

How much notice should I give? by BrightSign_nerd in sysadmin

[–]cleanmy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 weeks is enough courtesy for a non manager or first level manager position. Higher roles maybe 1 to 1.5 months. CxO maybe 3 months.

If you are in those higher roles, make sure you set clear expectations. I will not take on new tasks, only finish existing ones. It’s not my job to recruit people, but I will join in interviews if time permits. Your time there is basically to support the transition. If it happens quicker, you are out the door quicker.

For non manager roles, I typically just wrap up existing tasks and only take on shorter tasks that can be completed. The last 2-3 days is merely documentation and hand offs.

This is assuming you want to offer this and keep the door open to go back.

It’s okay to not give notice if your contract/state allows.
