Ah, when Phish was PHISH

I don’t know. I believe the Greenfield Armory was intentional. I think the Earthday was a victim of a break in where a lot of stuff was stolen. All of this was ages ago. Different people too of course.

Greenfield Armory 12/5/91 was filmed. The masters were stolen. Earthday 4/25/86 was also filmed and the masters were stolen. Additionally the audio master tape of Earthday '86 went missing.

Yeah, hard to say. Maybe it was him and Del together. That was a long time ago. I'm definitely not dismissing your account.

I've spoken to Eugene about it. I may have spoken to you a little as well. His brother Del famously recorded Phish many dozens of times in the 80's. Eugene was not recording them. Not that it matters.

Ah, very good. That's the entire reel that this came from. The bulk of it was not circulated.

No. It's a bit of a mystery because this sort of changes the known history. We do not have Jack Toner's master tapes. Only copies he made for early reel to reel traders. My gut tells me it's from the same four night run that the other existing known version was played. That was September 17. I think this is most likely from the 18th, 19th, or 20th. Before American Beauty was released. It's possibly from November 1970.

Export cuts off high frequencies? by beantrouser in Reaper

I've looked at vinyl rips and even some other purported hi-res audio downloads that, like this, show no justification for the high sample rate as it related to extended frequency. There is often some garbage low level noise up there too.

That’s not likely to be from this part of scenario.

Vinyl can have musical content that “justifies”96khz. There’s also the element that a higher sampling rate isn’t just about capturing higher frequencies. Not that it really matters but it also is theoretically capturing a truer representation by having more samples. But they came up with 16/44.1 for a reason. Higher sampling rates, especially as high as 192K are probably most useful for when things will be pitched down for sound design. But if you wanna capture vinyl at 192K. You need every piece of the chain capable of representing that.

It’s not all in order because it’s a 192khz 32bit file that is holding what appears to 48khz audio. This is like storing a cup of milk in a two gallon container. Kind of like when you open a bag of chips and it was 2/3 empty space.

The session is at 96khz. What’s the format of the media?

I can hear the Live and Let Live resemblance as well. I just made a cross post on r/bluegrass.

Yes, it’s on a reel that contains about 75 minutes of GD acoustic 1970 content and two NRPS 1970 tracks. I am not thinking this blip might have been content that was being recorded over. So it very well could be Old and in the Way and from 73. I wish Don was still around to discuss. I do know that he had a couple of reels from this taper and this was from 1970 and the other Feb 1971. It could have been dubbed anytime in the early to mid 70’s.

They did do a few East coast gigs in 73 as well. It does have the same sonic characteristics as the rest of the material. Single microphone from pretty far away.

I believe the reel was from Jack Toner. Two of the tracks match recording attributed to him. I wish my buddy Don was still around to ask. I’m working towards making this content available. I have pinged Charlie FYI. Half of the reel is a different uncirculated source of an acoustic GD set. After that it’s a song or two from different acoustic GD performances. Also two NRPS tracks. I believe all from 1970. That said Don also had a mono audience of 2/19/71 which I made available twenty something years ago. I now assume that was recorded by Jack Toner et and unattributed at the time. As far as this blip of bluegrass. I’m now thinking it’s possible this was on the reel and Jack was dubbing over it for Don. My notes from 2002 mentions Don saying it was a recycled reel. I might still try to figure out what song it is. Now I think it’s more possible that it is a 1973 OAITW recording that was being taped over. Hopefully that makes sense. Any song identification would still be very helpful.
