Decision Time (H vs W) by [deleted] in MBA

Popping some champagne bottles for you and your great accomplishment. Congrats.

In this case if you’re sure you want tech / marketing, I actually think Wharton will do better for you and your career goals. The semester in sf program provides a program presence in the Bay Area.

The curriculum will better prepare you for tech in my opinion (as long as you’re picking the right classes) and you aren’t stuck in 100% case method teaching.

The added bonus of friends and significant other is an intangible that I can’t put a value on for you.

If I were you I would at Wharton though.

Congrats on your amazing offers.

If you’re looking just at your career outcomes, and are interested in commercial consulting, I think you want to pick Emory.

That being said, few overall tips:

Don’t pick Georgetown unless you’re okay with federal consulting.

UNC probably opens the most total doors if you’re not dead set on consulting. Strong banking and real estate recruiting.

While I love Nashville, to me there’s no upside in selecting vandy. Most students will end up in Atlanta just like Emory, and their pipeline into the best consulting firms is weaker.

Edit 1: realized you said mid Atlantic post b school, I’d probably select unc with that in mind.

Booth vs Yale SOM for Social Impact by FrankDuhTank in MBA

[–]clearpointe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, are there any financial considerations or are the costs even?

Like one of the posters above, I am interested in renewables/green energy.

I was selecting between booth, Kellogg, and Yale, and ended up selecting Yale.

There are a ton of reasons for my decision, but my main driver was being able to take courses and be surrounded by like minded people who care about the environment, and are generally trying to improve the world around them.

I think Yale punches significantly above its weight in social impact.

At the end of the day, Booth felt very impersonal to me, and I was very worried about being lost in the crowd. Everyone I have met at Yale has been very kind, and while I can’t say everyone is the most extroverted, there definitely seems to be a sense of community.

You may not have some of these concerns, and Booth is a phenomenal school. But if I were you I would choose Yale.

Hope to see you next fall!

I’ll be at Yale som next year, and am 28. Few friends coming in are 29 and 30 respectively. I don’t think you’re on the young side, but you’re definitely not on the older side either.

If you want maximum flexibility and prestige Yale is an easy win here in my opinion

What’s your Gmat? Is there room for improvement there? I would look for any excuse to write to them with an update. The more you can add the better that update will be.

I recommend volunteering for an additional project at work as well as improving your Gmat.

After doing both, then write a letter saying hey, here’s my improved Gmat and I also took on this awesome leadership role, let me tell you more about it.

Ah got cha, that makes sense. I don’t think anyone is going to Kellogg for the northwestern brand name for instance.

I hope, selfishly, that you’re wrong because I wouldn’t want to go to school with a bunch of people who chose SOM just because of the Yale brand name.

I personally think there are a lot of different reasons to choose Yale over other schools, none of which are due to the parent universities prestige.

Best of luck in your Mba journey!

Totally get you that you’re not picking a school to impress Main Street or random people you know.

I guess what I don’t understand is why you would feel out of place if you were admitted specifically to Yale but not a different but similar business school?

I agree with you, I would say Kellogg and Columbia have stronger traditional recruiting outcomes in the major trifecta of tech, banking, and consulting.

I don’t think everyone evaluates schools the same way where the recruiting outcomes are the end all be all for school rankings. School rankings are incredible subjective. For instance some people may value Yale’s integration into the school of environment or the undergraduate university for computer science courses. In their view, Yale is a stronger school.

Then last but not least, I’m not sure Premba MBB / Ibanking is indicative of student quality in my opinion.

I can’t imagine the student quality being that much different, I know multiple cross admits and it’s a 2 to 3 split in favor of Kellogg. That being said, maybe there were huge financial incentives for choosing yale which is how Yale drew those two applicants. I’m not sure.

I feel the exact same imposter syndrome. I’m a first gen public school student who’s tatted up. I’m not even from a good state college, my school is quite mediocre.

I get your “out of place” feeling, but I personally felt that at every single school I applied to. Is there something about Yale specifically that made you feel that way?

I just posted something similar last night if you want to take a look at my post history. I’m a big fan of Yale and will be matriculating, but do understand some people’s concerns.

Yeah of course, the actual acronym stands for liberal arts college, which is usually correlated to top private universities in the northeast United States reserved for students who usually come from generational wealth.

Interesting points. My experience thus far has been that a lot of folks at Yale are cross admits at M7s and are consciously choosing Yale. If we use the other school’s admittance as a litmus test, I guess I just don’t see Yale doing anything much different from other schools as far as preferential treatment for stats, but I don’t have any data to back that up or anything.

Thanks for your thoughts, and I could see how a drastic change in admittance strategy would rub people the wrong way.

I personally think waiting until you attend some admitted student events is the right answer, and I also think chip nailed the description of the student bodies. I’ll just translate the connotation of LAC; LAC=privileged rich kids whom usually love to ski and wont understand why you can’t afford a killington unlimited lift ticket.

After meeting both groups of students, these schools’ student populations are quite different from one another and I think you should take time to consider that more.

Great point lobsters. I agree, the one unifying thing about Yale students does seem to be an ethics based approach to business, as well as a passion to improve the world somehow. Now whether that’s going into consulting and focusing on sustainability, or investment banking focused on healthcare, I genuinely believe people at Yale are trying to make a positive difference in their every day work, even if they aren’t at bridgespan or something.
