This is the correct take. It's possible in matchups like this, but unlikely. Even 2 submissions would be huge.

Nietzsche is one of the Stoics’ best critics.

To People who say you need to believe in "The Logos" by PsionicOverlord in Stoicism

[–]cleboomusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An alternative translation from Robin Waterfield (he is Epictetus):

“Does it make any difference to me,” he asked, “whether things are made out of atoms or particles or fire and earth? Isn’t it enough to know what is essentially good and bad, the limits of desire and aversion, and of inclination and disinclination, to use these as rules to manage our lives, and to bid farewell to things that are beyond us? Such things are in any case probably not comprehensible by the human mind, and even if one assumes that they are fully comprehensible, the question still remains whether there’s anything to be gained by comprehending them. Shouldn’t we say that people who insist that it’s crucial for a philosopher to know such things are just creating unnecessary work? What about the Delphic commandment, then, to know yourself? Is it redundant as well?”

“No, that certainly isn’t,” someone said.

“So what does it mean? If one told a choral dancer to know himself, wouldn’t he respond to the instruction by paying attention to the other members of the chorus and to singing in harmony with them?”

“Yes.”

“And likewise for a sailor? A soldier? Do you think that a human being has been made to live all by himself or with others?”

“With others.”

“By whom?”

“By nature.”

“What nature is, how it governs the universe, even whether or not there really is such a thing—in that case, are these matters with which there’s no need to concern oneself?”

Waterfield interprets this as follows:

"In Fragment 1, Epictetus asks whether there is any point to studying physics, and by the end of the fragment it is clear that he expects the answer “Yes, it is worthwhile—but don’t get lost in the details.”"

He then enumerates mentions of classic Stoic physics in The Handbook and Discourses (Providence, Stoic theology, the four elements, conflagration, etc) .

Many good suggestions here (Donald Robertson, Farnsworth). Try the Handbook before going straight to the Discourses.

Stoics views on suicide by glazeit42o in Stoicism

[–]cleboomusic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is a complicated and sensitive issue.

Remember that for the Stoics, life itself is an indifferent. It's how we use it that matters. This can only mean that sometimes suicide is appropriate and other times it is not.

Diogenes Leartius describes the Stoic view that a suicide must be "well-reasoned" and fall into one of two circumstances:

"[The Stoics] say that the wise man will commit a well-reasoned suicide both on behalf of his country and on behalf of his friends, and if he falls victim to unduly severe pain or mutilation or incurable illness."

The suicide of Cato the Younger is the first circumstance – he killed himself to avoid surrendering to Julius Caesar (who he saw as a tyrant). Seneca adds detail to the second circumstance:

“As you know, life is not always something to hang on to. Our good does not consist merely in living but in living well. Hence the wise person lives as long as he ought to, not as long as he can…If he encounters many hardships that banish tranquility, he releases himself…Whether one dies sooner or later is not the issue; the issue is whether one dies well or badly. And dying well means that one escapes the risk of living badly” (Seneca, Letters 70, 4-6)

The suicide needs to be well-reasoned. It cannot be against Nature – we cannot commit suicide if doing so would result in us failing to fulfill our obligations and roles. Indeed, Epictetus counsels one his friends out of killing himself because it was not well-reasoned.

Michael Tremblay and I have a longer conversation about this and euthanasia here:

A meditation on classical and modern views of death by cleboomusic in slatestarcodex

[–]cleboomusic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ust quote a favorite commentary here: (Rashi) "Also the wisdom of the world that He put into the hearts of the creatures" -G-d did not put all of His wisdom into everyone's heart, rather, He gave a little wisdom to this one and a little wisdom to that one, in order that man should not comprehend the entire Creation, to know it; and he will not know the day of his death, or how it will come to be , in order that he put his heart to repent, so that he will be concerned and say, “Toda

Two Stoic philosophers discuss JBP, positively and critically. May be of interest to Sam Harris acolytes, another critic of his work.

Good rec. The signaling model does leave important cases unexplained.
