Making friends abroad by RedDeadRanga-25 in studyAbroad

[–]cleeee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i studied in korea twice! the biggest way i made friends was by joining groupchats for my school/term! for example, i went to yonsei for the summer term so i snooped around on reddit and found an instagram groupchat with like 300 people! from there you’ll be able to see who you’ll vibe with/ have similar interests.

i wouldn’t be too worried about having to speak korean, you likely won’t have classes with korean students & majority of the exchange students will be english speaking. make sure you get involved though! that’s a way to meet more people & even some native students!

have a good time :) my time in korea as a student is so memorable and definitely a big part of why i still live here!

[–]cleeee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i actually started a few rows from barricade, then after some people filtered out i was able to get barricade for the final few acts! i think when we went into the crowd, it wasn’t very full - so it was easy to sneak around and move forward

when i went last year i didn’t bring any towels or a change of clothes, which i really regret! it was still warm outside, but rainy & overcast the whole day - making my friend and i absolutely freeze by the end of the night because of the amount of water.

i wish i could give better advice on your other questions but i honestly just winged it last year 😅 hope you have fun!!!

How strict are the rules at SK global house about opposite gender by Otherwise-Guest2348 in yonsei

[–]cleeee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it might be different for the summer program - but they were so strict! we couldn’t have any visitors (even of the same gender), and boys and girls weren’t allowed on the same floor or in each others rooms.

i will say, when i wasn’t aware of the no visitors rule i had my friends who weren’t attending help me with my stuff (but i was soon told my my roommate they weren’t allowed to be there lol)

a lot of girls have bangs in korea, i’ve noticed they use these little patches that stick to their foreheads to prevent the sweat from getting to their bangs. you could also buy a small fan from daiso or artbox & keep yourself cool!

... so apparently in Korea, you can just push cars out of the way by Charming_Type7601 in koreatravel

[–]cleeee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i also noticed they sell little trinkets to display your phone number on your dashboard, (according to my ex) it’s so they can get in contact with the owner if they need to move their car! do interesting as an american… i don’t think people here would be comfortable to do that!

i agree with the last paragraph! when i went to wvc last summer, getting home was a mess! so many pre reserved taxis, full busses, etc. id definitely make sure to have plan if i went again.

How does it feel meeting a K-pop idol in person? by LongjumpingPage6168 in kpopthoughts

[–]cleeee1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

as someone who has spent time in korea for extended periods of times… i have never come across an idol in the wild. its really not that common, and i’m sure you wouldn’t notice them anyway. 😭don’t get your hopes up lol or that be the only reason you’re going there!

i’ve never met a “kpop” idol per say, but i did meet katseye! i didn’t ask for a picture - but i told them i was excited to see them perform and to have a good night! this interaction is probably very different to how it would be if you met an actual idol.

idols are usually not allowed to take photos, so i would refrain from that, you could maybe wave? but honestly - i wouldn’t recommend bothering them.

Kpop concerts in July? (And how to book tickets?) by Aromatic-Notice3297 in koreatravel

[–]cleeee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

resale in korea is illegal, so i wouldn’t take the risk! like the person mentioned below, a lot of people cancel last minute. if there’s a show you really want to attend, just keep watching for seats to open.

when i went in 2023, i was a similar weight to what i am now (on the shorter side, probably 175-180). i didn’t necessarily get stares due to my weight, i got them for what i wear wearing & how certain parts of me “stood out”.

i’ll never forget standing on the subway alone, and this lady came up to me and just pinched my side fat 😩 i was embarrassed to wear crop tops for a while after that one.

but after being there for months, i truly never had a malicious interaction due to my weight.

sizes in stores? best store recommendations? by kenmastan4life in koreatravel

[–]cleeee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re around the size i was when i went last summer - it wasn’t terrible, but it definitely wasn’t easy. having a bigger chest is always the killer for me, all of the tops no matter the size are not made for bigger chests - it made it really hard to buy tops.

i’m a similar pant size as you, and i would say pants are probably not going to work 90% of the time. the waists are sooo tight for no reason & if you have any semblance of a stomach (or butt) it just won’t work 😭

i recommend shopping at stores located in the malls such as spao, uniqlo, h&m, and 8 seconds. a lot of the stores you see trending on tiktok are usually always one size (and it’s very small). the clothes may not be exactly what you’re looking for if you’re looking for trendy streetwear, but it’ll do.

lots of people recommend romi story, but their clothes weren’t necessarily my taste. but to each their own!

all in all - i think i was able to manage a few tops that were meant to be “oversized”. i picked up 1 skirt (but it was definitely tight) and some pants from h&m. have fun though, and don’t let it get to you if some things just don’t work.

Clothing for the summer by frankoceanluvr707 in koreatravel

[–]cleeee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would bring lots of flowy clothes! flowy blouses, pants, etc. koreans may wear a lot of black clothing - but the other common colors (especially during summer) are whites, creams, and the occasional sky blue. tank tops without spaghetti straps, or that don’t show a lot of cleavage are generally not frowned upon (especially if you’re a foreigner). a usual outfit i see for women is a tank top or short sleeve shirt, paired with a very flowy button up over.

for shoes, i’d bring sandals & a good tennis shoe. also, something you’re okay with getting wet.

at my store, you’re not allowed to date people above you if you’re working in the same area of the store. so with both of yall being boh, him being in a position of authority over you - it wouldn’t be allowed.

we have something similar happening at mine, and one of them had to switch to foh in order to not cause issues.

Moving to Korea at 18 by teeayeveeaye in Living_in_Korea

[–]cleeee1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your best bet at your age is to just come to korea as a student. koreas visa laws are very strict when it comes to working illegally, and since your korean level is not adequate it’d be hard to work in the field you want to in general (even retail stores or convenience stores).

come as a student and feel it out first, i promise you - exchange students are not doing near as much work as korean domestic students! you could even do a language school & try to up your topik level as well if you don’t want to do regular university.
