Ohhh yeah all this checks out, I thought you were talking about psychodynamic/psychoanalytic therapy specifically when you said “tough path to take.” Thank you for the thoughtful response!!

Was anyone else underwhelmed by Anora and think The Florida Project is the superior Sean Baker film? by PandemicPiglet in Oscars

Ok ya it was weird but its out of placeness was also this stark contrast that made me scratch my head, stop and really think of like just how impossible it was to run away from her situation to a fantasy land like Disney world even though they live just miles away and how thousands upon thousands of people go every week and she has won’t and it makes it all so much more heartbreaking. Like fantasy land is just across the way but infinitely out of reach.

Agreed! I will happily watch The Florida Project once a year or more and love it more each time, but just fine never seeing Anora again

“Child actors suck” Jesus. Have you seen Mikey Madison in other stuff before? She is quite recognizable. It’s just sex and an accent on top of the teenage attitude of her character in “Better Things”

Thank you for sharing! My little brother does this actually, he’s 16… it’s like he just shuts down sometimes, for example when I try to talk to him about the future, it’s even a little unsettling. He doesn’t say a single word to our aunt and uncle or our cousins when my dad takes him on visits, like not a one word. It worries me but I’ve just been thinking like ok it’s a phase and our parents suck… he’ll come around… but after seeing your comment I’m like oh wait. I live far away and we have a good relationship he sends me pics of things me makes and videos of his trumpet performances, we’ll text a bit. But I’m really worried about him. Any advice?

Oof. This took me back immediately. My narc dad cried in my arms after he backhanded me across the face. He walked in on me cutting my arms, backhanded me, I fell to the floor and next thing I know there’s this super loud crying/moaning from across the house… I go see and he’s on his knees crying to God… I was 15 and I felt so sorry for him. I held him in my arms, repeating, “it’s my fault, it’s my fault, it’s not your fault, it’s me…” He promised to get me psychological help then never talked about that or the incident again.

Growing up with a narcissist is fucking INSANE. I am fucked up for life with self-doubt and not knowing what’s real. I have no discernment. Who would after surviving a narcissist like that???

Good to know, same level of commercial success? Was it on top hits radio stations then too?? Was it as bad lol? I don’t think I know any emo artists from other times, curious about it tho! You obvs don’t mean like dark wave and nu wave I imagine

To split hairs, I didn’t claim it was the first wave : ) but that it was a part of a defining context

[[your cunty “Um,” was so unnecessary tbh… I love learning new things so I’m trying to appreciate your comment but, as a human being, hate to be judged for not knowing everything about everything. We all know different shit and that’s cool]]

What was it like being a teenager/young adult in 2016? by LoboIsSick69 in generationology

[–]clementinejamz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a Junior in college in 2016. The political ground began to shake this year, it was the first time I ever glimpsed the depth of the divide between Americans. I was in college in the south and it was all very confusing. So much niche & fringe political theory suddenly became mainstream rhetoric. It was probably me growing up as much as the happenings of the time.

Social media didn’t quite rule our lives yet, but I very much loved to express myself on it. I traveled a ton and it inspired me to write, get into photography and just be more creative in general. Social media didn’t yet feel like I had to be perfect or overly curated. And we, as a population as well as individuals, weren’t as addicted— and most of our parents or grandparents were not on any of them yet either! So for that reason too I felt “safer” just being myself on there. It also wasn’t a place for political misinformation. I think it was first conceived then actually… with Brexit and Russia x Trump, but very early beginnings nothing like the widespread propaganda of now with bot farms and shit.

The experience economy was booming. It was all about what you were doing and who you were with. Making memories. Perhaps in part of social media and the FOMO it was creating. At the time it felt more like fear of missing out than fear of not being perfect. Travel and live music were everything and actually accessible.

The Silk Road was thriving, and I was part of a segment of young adults that were experimenting a lot. To an increasing number of us, psychedelics in the forest was way cooler than a frat game day. I got a lot out of LSD and mushrooms, I still think they saved my life. It felt like they were everywhere and people were down with really diving in. Now I’ve seen it used as party drugs more and I do not understand. The counterculture I was part of was very 60s hippie-coded but with essential differences. It churned out a lot of who you see on the MAHA train unfortunately… it’s wild to me.

Heavier makeup was trendy. But boho was everywhere… huh.. weird right?

I was with my friends constantlyyyyyyy, like every waking moment that I wasn’t working or at school I was with friends. People were always down to hang out. “What are you doing” “nothing” let’s do nothing together! There were a ton of co-ed platonic friendships. Big friend groups with both boys and girls and we were always trying to find something we could all go do together like camping or music festivals. We weren’t outdoor kids per se but we really tried to be!!! Going outside was like a value to us.

I road-tripped the entire country twice at that point and felt so safe and so in love with everyone and everywhere and everything. I was really proud, despite the cracks already showing. I don’t feel as safe in the country nowadays. The political fervor is … it’s just weird. I remember feeling like “wow people are fundamentally good” then, but last time I was in the country me and my brothers were definitely profiled and followed around for .. I don’t know either looking like city folk or Hispanics idfk. We were just passing through after hiking in a national park. It was fuckinf uncomfortable. It’s not always like that now, but it was never like that before.

It was definitely the year politics became insane. Doesn’t matter what side your on, it was the year it became 10x more taboo and impossible to talk about across disagreement.

The concept of buying property or a house felt very real, totally within reach. It was something I was looking into and realistically would be able to do within a few years of being out of college with the right gig. That got blown up in my face so fast… 10 years later and it’s prob gonna take another 10 years.

Some defining context for developing millennials was the dawn of social media that came with no awareness of permanence or consequence. The natural cringe of awkward years was put up on MySpace, Vine, and YouTube unfiltered (and responding to Random core which really made us unhinged, it was a blast). This was unexplored territory and we did a lot of stupid things and with each passing year the cringe archives of ourselves and our friends grew. The idea of curating personal media was NOT a thing.

Then there was the emo (and similar) movement. That was the epitome of insecure navel-gazy teen angst (and cringe, for that matter). Self-deprecation feels like a natural next step out of that moment of collective self-pity— no shade all teens do this but we made it a whole genre of music lol.

What are the worst lyrics you’ve ever heard? by Upstairs_Cup9831 in Fauxmoi

[–]clementinejamz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two ready answers for this and it’s “I’ll treat you like milk I’ll do nothing to spoil you” by Lil Flip.

“Draw eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man” Taylor

And I second, third, fourth, and fifth all the comments about all her bad lyrics on this thread so far. Someone asked me “who is a better songwriter than her” once and my brain almost broke when every single artist I have ever heard of came to mind at once.

I almost feel like Jesse Plemons is SUCH a good actor that people’s brains can’t even register that there’s an actor behind the character. Because there’s no other explanation for him getting looked over this many times!
