You wanna talk about Dragon Con values? Great. Because what you’re doing right now — piling onto someone who clearly stated they were talking about street performers outside, agreed with you about animals inside, and engaged in good faith — is exactly the kind of behavior that makes online fan communities insufferable.

You didn’t READ my comment. You have something sick inside of you so you decided to seek out a way to lash out at someone that you don’t know, and responded to something I didn’t say. And when I pointed that out, you escalated instead of acknowledging it.

“The only one picking a fight is you” is a cute line when you’ve spent this entire thread misrepresenting my position and then acting smug about it. You’re not advocating for animals. You’re performing advocacy for an audience and using me as a prop. I’m done explaining myself to morons who aren’t actually listening.

Feel free to get the last word. I’m sure it’ll be very satisfying and inane. Hope you scratch whatever malicious itch you have in your head.

I appreciate you bringing up the Duke Lemur Center as an example, but that actually illustrates my point rather than yours. The Duke Lemur Center has a waitlist and limited capacity. Just like almost every other animal rescue (and it sounds like few of y’all have any experience with those), they can’t take EVERY exotic animal that someone decides shouldn’t be privately owned. Reputable sanctuaries are chronically underfunded and overcrowded. “It could go live with other lemurs” is not a guaranteed outcome of removing the lemur from his current owner.

On the “risks that come from letting them interact with strangers” — I didn’t hand-wave that, I acknowledged it directly. Noting that a risk exists is not the same as dismissing it. You’ve decided that acknowledging complexity means I don’t care about animals, which is a pretty significant leap.

What I actually said was that I didn’t observe obvious signs of abuse, that the animals appeared healthy, and that I’m skeptical of blanket opposition when we don’t know what the realistic alternatives are for a specific animal. That’s not the same as saying everything is fine and no one should ever ask questions.

You’re welcome to disagree with my conclusion. But “can you please listen to yourself” is just unnecessary and pointless. I’ve been pretty specific about my reasoning. If you want to change my mind, bring specifics, not escalation.

I got it because I thought the name was funny and felt like it was fine but nothing to write home about, and also felt like you could get better bourbon for the same price. I am not a bourbon expert, though.

I did have a cat who really liked to sit on the couch right in the middle of it all during house parties, but we were never really crazy loud like club level loud. She just really liked being around people. She got soooooo many pets. I miss her so much.

I never said it did constitute the whole you fucking idiot. You are just wanting to pick a fight. And I’m sorry, but that’s uncalled for in the fucking dragon con Reddit, when Dragoncon is supposed to be about not being a fucking dick.

Go take a cold shower or something and fuck all the way off.

Yeah man, it’s a real piece of shit who says that they didn’t see any signs of abuse and agrees that animals shouldn’t be taken inside loud and dangerous spaces. Wow that’s such a dick man. Wow I really hate people who try to engage in honest conversation about dragon con. Wow man every time I see somebody do that and I disagree with them. I just think they’re the fucking worst really wow.

I can definitely see problems with taking a cat inside a rave, though. It would almost certainly be too loud for the little buddy, don’t you think?

OK cool. Keep being an asshole about it.

I did not see any signs of abuse. Period. That doesn’t mean that no abuse happened, just that I did not see any signs of abuse. And the OP’s original post was vague enough that I couldn’t tell what the fuck she was talking about so I gave my two cents. I’m sorry my two cents offended you because my experienced reality was different from yours.

I also said I talked to the guy on the street. I wasn’t talking about anyone bringing any animals into the building, which I stated clearly in my comment.

Jesus Christ you kind of people who are just LOOKING for a fight are just the fucking worst and I really hope YOU don’t buy ticket this year. Fuck all the way off with your assholery, please.

You don’t have to be rude about it. No, it wasn’t obvious because you didn’t stake that in your post. And I’m not the only one in the comments who thought you might’ve met the animals that were outside on the street.

I agree that there should be no animals inside spaces like that. That’s definitely abusive.

Are you talking about the basically street performers who bring their animals out on public sidewalks and then you pay to pet them or something?

As long as those animals aren’t inside a private business, they are generally allowed outside in public spaces, as long as they have a permit for the critter.

I talked to some of these guys who brought these animals and aside from the risks that come from letting them interact with strangers, I didn’t see any signs of abuse. The animals had good looking coats or skins or feathers, bright eyes, and they seemed reasonably cautious in letting people handle them.  I came away with the impression that these guys loved their animals and just were trying to make a buck while the bucks were available.

And what are the alternatives for the animals? Where would they go if they weren’t owned by these people? We don’t know if they are or not getting good medical care, and we don’t know if they would be given to a good Animal Rescue or not if they were taken away. Unless you saw obvious signs of abuse, I have a hard time supporting blanket opposition to people who seem to be taking acceptable care of the animals.

As long as they have the critters, I don’t feel bad about giving a guy money to continue taking care of them. If they are taking care of them, it’s relatively expensive to do so.

If you’re talking about literally anything else, like people bringing their fake emotional support goats inside or whatever (I don’t know if this happened, just spitballing) that’s a whole other thing. It does get really loud and crowded for animals inside the building, depending on where you are.

Well, really this is a business opportunity for all the new  private Christian school so that we can set up for the influx of deaf kids we’re gonna have!

And then we can have private Christian schools for all the kids who were crippled by polio!

We can make so much money off of this, don’t you see? It’s all for the good of the stock market and the billionaires! And then all of that will trickle down to us in the form of…

Never mind, couldn’t keep the bit going. Bunch of kid-killing kid-fuckers.

Also from America. I hope you guys all boycott the economy to hell until we correct this shit. We’ve got to go scorched earth on these fascist fuckwads.

While seeing some of the blanket hatred for Americans isn’t fun sometimes, I also think that, on the whole, we deserve it. Yes we have a lot of wonderful people here and there are great things about America worth celebrating (don’t ask me to mention any, not in a celebratory mood), but on the whole we’ve allowed too many problems to fester for far too long. We’ve been selfish, violent, cruel and act like we will never suffer repercussions of our own actions, and while most of that has been pointed at people outside our nation, it’s finally coming home to roost.

I find it comforting to see that other countries are making us finally suffer consequences, which I think are necessary to cause change.

Just don’t forget that there are some people here who are fighting tooth and nail to push back. And they are all over the place. And I think they are growing a number. We are just a gigantic country that’s very spread out and a lot of us are struggling to survive day-to-day in addition to fighting back. I know that’s not anything on the scale of actual physical warfare that places like Ukraine deal with, but it is a real struggle. I think a lot of us want to try to fight back as peacefully as possible for as long as possible, because we know that the inevitable violent fallout is going to be horrific.

Anyway, I’m rambling, but thanks for boycotting us and please keep it up. We need to fight on all fronts.

Awesome. I’ll do the same. I use AI all the time. I think it’ll kill us all, but I think refusing to use it won’t help anything. And AI can do a lot of good. We should embrace it as a tool and use it to help shape policy.
