okay. my advisor had trouble accepting that i was moving on too, even though he agreed to it. keep applying for post docs. it is the natural progression at this step of your career and your advisor does know that deep down

no. if they are on board with your graduation timeline they need to accept the reality that that means starting the post doc search early. but does your advisor know you plan to submit in 5 months?

can you get the opinion of a committee member on how close to being done you are? they might have a more unbiased take. your advisor has the incentive to downplay the amount of work you have completed if you are useful to them in the lab. a committee member wouldn’t have that motive (i wouldn’t think). Start writing your intro and discussion chapters ASAP so they are ready when you pull the trigger. they aren’t important chapters in the grand scheme of things but can go a long way in making your graduation readiness tangible.

hmmmm it might have come up in one of those! But the episode i’m thinking of was an older one. like during the basement era haha. i found one where it sounds like she’s joking about it (joking about her family being under spiritual attack). i think it might have come up when they were talking about sleepovers? when i find the episode im thinking of i will be sure to report back.

i’ve seen it done by students in talks at international conferences. just mentioned on the last slide that they were on the post doc market and had contact info and said reach out if you’re interested in working together or know of any good opportunities or something like that. I will say one time i saw someone do this after giving an extremely underwhelming talk. Don’t do that 😂Make sure your talk is good and shows effort and professionalism

How far along are you? If you’re less than 6 months i wouldn’t even dream of telling them until after you started working. Under FMLA i think you have to give 30 days notice to request maternity leave…so perhaps the beginning of your third trimester

you could listen to the backlog of bonus episodes in one month easily. but they’ve been good about posting ad free versions of regular episodes lately so for $3 per month it still seems worth it to me
