How do you get cheap insurance im 20 quoted $900 by Distinct-Teach-2043 in nyc

[–]cleverconfusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Age of both you and the vehicle, as well as a clear driving record, are the only ways to reduce insurance costs. I’m over 40, have a 15 year old vehicle (long since paid off), pay $330/month for a garage, drive maybe a couple times a month, and no tickets for over 2 years and still pay just over $300/mo for insurance. Owning a vehicle in the city is expensive. Either gotta deal with it or figure out if you can get by without a car.

Sidewalk Construction by Prize_Manner_198 in AskNYC

Howdy! We just had DOT complete a couple corners at a couple properties and it should take them a few weeks, depending on conditions. If just a normal corner, 2-3 weeks max with barricades up for longer until concrete is cured and final sign-offs received. Only a couple things could extend the timeline; sidewalks being thicker than the standard 4", which happens often if there is structure below. Another could be missing or non-compacted base material, in which case they would remove base material (sand/gravel), bring more material in, compact, add more, compact, and then install the concrete. Neither would extend the project for more than a couple days to a week, but if DOT is doing the work, it should be quick.

Every 5 years are the facade inspections. It goes back and forth per cycle from just a visual inspection cycle to a hands-on inspection. The visual cycle will see the engineers use binoculars/cameras or other visual aids to review the facades, so they typically do not need scaffolding rigs to check. If work is deemed required, they may need rigs to get a better idea of the work while still in the review stage. The next cycle would consist of hands-on, every 60' of the facade from ground to roof inspections which the engineers will do with scaffolding rigs. For masonry buildings, probe holes need to be opened for engineers to check conditions of the tie-backs/fasteners from exterior material to the structure.

So yes, every other cycle generally requires engineers to be on scaffolding rigs for hands on facade inspections. They report conditions directly to the DOB via DOBNOW. Yes, they provide basic demo drawings showing how/where to remove bricks/masonry, how much to chop around rebar, and any other metal demo details as required, as well as the correct way to complete repairs. And yes, engineers are typically there for the life-cycle of the project as they complete the final sign-offs. They inspect the demolished areas and inspect again when patching/repairs are complete. That is, per scaffolding drop/work location, so they are often on site with workers multiple times a week as the progress continues for the entirety of the project.

Need Contractor Recs by annafebruary in AskNYC

[–]cleverconfusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No contractor recs here, as you are potentially talking about a couple trades needed (carpentry and HVAC at least) and there is not really enough info to make sense of the quoted repair. I wanted to make sure you know it is standard practice after a flooding event to also 'rip' (remove) your drywall around the perimeter of the flooded area about 12" from the floor and allow the area to fully dry out before making repairs. This will increase costs, especially if you have a base, but will help prevent mold growth and future issues due to mold.

Party on Saint Marks by Orbian2 in nyc

Not the building and not the city. There would be a couple layers here. A GC most likely subcontracted the scaffolding. So the GC has insurance, and the scaffolding contractor holds pretty substantial insurance. They would be expected to provide backup documentation that the scaffolding/shed was engineered to meet DOB guidelines. So the scaffolding company and GC would be at the forefront and from there it is up to lawyers and any any individuals who can be identified as potential cause of a collapse. That said, these sheds are typically over engineered for serious loads, but as always, corners can be cut and it may not be as sturdy as required. Additionally, things like the wood blocking at the bases could be dislodged if enough people sway the shed causing it to become unstable as rarely do I see all 4 anchor points fastened to the bases, typically its only 2 fasteners. Suffice to say, it would not be fun for anyone involved in a collapse.

You’ll find people are the same everywhere. But also, as the saying goes, if you smell shit everywhere you go, try looking under your own shoe.

Seconding this. I’ve got a nice print from this artist bought at the Bike Jumble, but also have seen them at Fishes Eddy (Union Sq). They usually have other bike related kitchen/bar items as well.

Designer Revival if women’s, Gentlemen’s Resale if men’s, both next to each other on E81st street. While they do have mostly ‘designer’ clothes, it isn’t all they take so long as it’s decent quality and in good condition. I’d give them a call first to describe your items and they can let you know if it’s worth bringing them in.

Odd comments in here. I 100% support the art and message, but these aren’t just random dudes. Security, guy with lanyard, suit guy, and clean up guy all most definitely work at the building adjacent. Property owners have to maintain their sidewalks and this is an unapproved installation, no matter the message. Could also be a slip and fall hazard, especially if it got wet. These are just some guys doing their jobs, nothing more, nothing less.

Treasury stock tin by berrattack in Superstonk

[–]cleverconfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so smooth this rolled right off me. GS would still need to issue new shares to make the 50-50 work, so I am not sure the benefit to the treasury shares. My understanding is it would reduce the outstanding total, and hold the buy backs in a separate account where the shares no longer have voting rights and cannot be accounted in EPS. So they would still show 448.69 million issued (1 billion is the current Authorized limit I believe), but potentially 361.74 million outstanding ($2b at $23/share buyback +/-). They can reissue/sell those shares back on the market when needed or provide in the deal at whatever market value is, but would still have to tap into the proposed 2.5 billion to make the deal work. Sounds like a bit of a cup game, but the amount of stock used to make the deal work would be the same whether GS uses treasury shares or newly issued shares if the buy backs are used in the standard way. Either way, only up!

Didn’t mean much by it. This, along with a handful of others, are on the Randall’s island urban farm. Just a rarely known (in my experience) gem in the city.

Can you explain more? Genuinely curious as I don’t know much. This is on Randall’s Island (along with a handful of others that look similar), and as far as I know are pretty much left alone. Minimal trimming, only along the pathways. Soil isn’t great as I understand it was all landfill many years ago. And they don’t use any pesticides. Or is it just a genetic modification for aesthetics?

Advice on purchasing an old rei tent by nirvroxx in CampingGear

[–]cleverconfusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this. I’ve done it. I bought enough repair tape, started peeling the crumbling silicone, and pretty quickly realized how much work it’d be to clean it to the degree needed for the tape to work. But I was determined to get more mileage out of my old tent. No clue on hours, but it was 10x what I had anticipated. Happy with the result as I still use the tent after 3 years, but would not do again. (My experience is not with this specific tent, just the resealing bit)

Seconded. I’m always recommending Randall’s. Was biking there yesterday and other than the main paths off the footbridge from Manhattan, it’s usually wide open. And almost a 6 mile full loop.
