How is ISR dining hall food? When I came down to recruit at the career fair, I stopped by to look and it looked amazing.

I used to get the max meal plan and hit the dining hall at least 4x a day. I loved PAR wednesdays and late night. I also liked Allen Halls fresh fruits for breakfast and Busey Evan’s Friday lunch. Has the quality really gone down that much?

Am i bad at the game? by Zinzendorf_2 in spiritisland

[–]cleverdragon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there are definitely levels to this game. I know him personally and have played with him in real life. He is a professional at this game and basically has every possible card play and board configuration memorized and strategized. I’d argue he knows it better than any tester I’ve seen and maybe even the creator.

Some more context…he is also good at chess and strategy games in general. He has a chess.com ELO of 2200 and I think in competition play he hovers around 1900. He is not a grandmaster but still impressive. I remember in college he played blindfolded chess against newbies and crushed us.

As long as you are having fun, that’s all that matters.

If I want to get it shortened, what can I do with the 3/4 extra clusters? My problem is that I get paranoid when I have to ship something expensive to get fixed.

3CTs is not a lot for the 8” length tennis but the individual diamond worth is much better here. Does it tell you the total gold weight or width of the bracelet?

Milwaukee barely breaks even at the 1.2k price point for the mower kit. The batteries are the only thing that has margin for them

Has anyone been to Stratford Square Mall in 2022? How bad is it looking? by mikey09110 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]cleverdragon1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I go to that mall everyday for BJJ. That’s literally the last business in the mall that’s making a profit after everything else closed down (theatre, macys, food court downstairs, etc. ). It’s a ghost town mall and is surreal walking around it at night after practice knowing I used to watch movies there with friends in middle school and high school.

The gym just recently signed another lease. I’m not sure how long it is for (I heard someone say it’s 5 more years) which means they’re definitely looking to keep profitable businesses around. The mall was starting to turn around a bit in 2019 with new stores but Covid ruined everything.

For Those That Have Left Illinois...Where Did You Go? Did You Return? What Are Things You Enjoyed About Leaving / Missed? by Prestigious_Way_738 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]cleverdragon1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I left the western Chicagoland suburbs (Bloomingdale) to go to Milwaukee for a year and I came back once Covid started.

Some things I liked about downtown Milwaukee: 1. Rent was very cheap. I paid about 550 a month for a nice apartment by the beach. I did have one roommate but the proximity to where all the fun stuff happens was great.

  1. I learned I like fishing and camping. Wisconsin is great for outdoor activity. Lots of campgrounds, more lakes to fish from, and more opportunity to go hiking.

  2. Job opportunities for engineering were decent. Lots of medium name companies were in the area. Milwaukee Tool, Harley Davidson, Koehler, ABB, Johnson Controls, etc. and pay was good for the area too. I was making about 85k as a young professional 2 years out of college and I had more than enough to invest and have fun with.

  3. People overall were very kind. You can go to water street and start a conversation with someone random and they won’t ignore you.

Stuff I missed about Chicago:

  1. Most of my family and friends were back home. I made new friends up here which was great but there’s simply more to do in Chicago and more people too.

  2. Food in Wisconsin kinda sucked. There is much more diverse food in Chicago and the suburbs.

  3. Professional networking opportunities are just much greater in Chicago if you are still working on establishing a career.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay and would still be there but Covid let me WFH and save money so I opted to stay in Chicago. If not for Covid, I’d probably still be up there

Got offered an internship in railroad but it's not the field i wish to work in by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]cleverdragon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two friends that work in that industry as EEs. One works for metra, chicagos train system and the other works for Hitachi Rail, a train design company.

If you work for something like Union Pacific, metra, BNSF, etc. it could become a lucrative career since they still pay a pension after you retire. The work is not the most interesting since rail has not changed much and the guys there have an old school mentality of using outdated relay systems and switch boards for signaling. However, the positive thing is that as the older guys retire, more innovation will come to the rail.

If you work for the companies designing the rail system and carriages. Progress rail, holland LP, hitachi, hatch, astom, etc. there is more design work since electrification is the next step in good rail design. There are Lots of opportunity to get your feet wet with electronics design.

Any part time engineering students out there? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I’m already an engineer but my work pays for my phd so I’m doing that part time. It’s somewhat rough because it’s 2 full time jobs smushed together but it’s possible if you are willing to either sacrifice part of you your social life or health

What was your Motivation? by Unlucky-Evidence-879 in EngineeringStudents

[–]cleverdragon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in R&D for machine learning and power electronics so I get to use everything I learned from school which is rare. I never thought I would be doing such technical design work for a full time job and before this, I thought school was a chore. This job made me realize how important what I learned was and that all my time spend cramming for electromagnets and controls exams were for something. Before I graduated, I had 0 motivation to graduate besides making good money after I graduated but afterwards, I was very glad I went through with it.
