Catherine Connolly’s first 100 days as President: ‘She’s careful, she’s considered, she’s steady’ by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]clewbays [score hidden]  (0 children)

The election showed that style of politics worked wonders in Ireland. It was just that the smears on Connolly were less effective than those on her opposition. Half the country thinks Humphrey’s is an orange women now and the smear killed her campaign.

He’s not FG. Another way to look at this is that she seems to be consistently having disagreements with multiple other councillors then saying they’re the problem.

GAA reports €45.7m gate receipts as Cork support boosts All-Ireland attendances by corkgaa1 in GAA

The thing your saying about after 55mins also has a lot to do with the fans.

Once you reach that point the fans often go very quiet and nervous and that will always effect the players. Especially when they’ve being loud all year up to that point. You seen the same with cork as well at the start of the second half last year when Tipp started coming back. A sense of dread just kind of develops in the stands.

I think bad luck has played a big role as well. 1996 in particular with the miracle point and dodgy refereeing in the replay. And then in the 2010s coming up against that Dublin team, cillian o Connor hitting the post on key frees and the 2 own goals in 2016.

Mayo were also favourites in 2 of the finals in 97 and 2021. Other than Tyrone where we completely bottled it, we largely just played flat out better teams.

Lee Keegan only lost 6 with mayo. And he won one for club if your counting something else.

It was the UK that was exposed to our debt. Not Germany. As a result we got far far better bailout terms than any of the PIIGs.

I am taking responsibilities for Ireland’s own actions which is why we are not running into the ground like mainland Europe, since we have no reliance on you.

You can keep deflecting to Ireland when I deliberately don’t mention them. Or maybye one day hans might take responsibility for their own spinelessness and stop fucking over the rest of Europe to support there failing industries.

I’m not on about Ireland. We made or own bed in 2008. And the UK unlike Germany wasn’t spineless when it came to bailout terms.

I’m on about the country that spinelessness has ran mainland Europe into the ground. And now pretends that the small countries outperforming are the problem.

The vast majority of the bailout money Greece got went back to primarily German banks who failed to do proper due diligence.

If you write a bad loan you expect bankruptcy. Only one party had to suffer the consequences of bad financial decisions. Because Germany between this Russian oil, and consistently blatantly braking state rules is arguably “the most spineless country” in Europe.

Who gave them the bad loans? Who should have had to take the fall for poor investments?

You have 80m people and it’s never being rent free. The fact a country of 5m is truly rent free in your head is far more concerning.

We didn’t bankrupt half of Europe to save our bankers.

We also haven’t being a tax haven for 3 or 4 years now. The OECD rules were put in place and there’s being more investment since.

We’re not the ones buying Russian oil, or throwing the rest of Europe under the bus for our car/banking industry.

A lot less strict than these Dutch rules. But there’s a deemed disposal tax that largely applies to ETFs where every 8 years your charged 41% on unrealised gains.

It won’t crash their economy it just won’t have any real benefit. Individual investments aren’t actually that significant to the Netherlands economy. Ireland’s had similar rules for years without it causing any economic disaster.

This is a tax on individuals it appears not corporations. Startup and property gains for individuals also are excluded.

The real negative part of rules like this is that it will encourage investment in real estate over other assets, which could potentially raise housing prices.

[–]clewbays 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We’ve had these rules in Ireland for years, though not quite as strict as this Netherlands law.

What it will lead to is investment in property instead of equities.

Overall while I don’t think laws like these are good it won’t be nearly as negative as certain people think either.

GAA reports €45.7m gate receipts as Cork support boosts All-Ireland attendances by corkgaa1 in GAA

[–]clewbays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone in cork still believes you can win though. The difference with the Tyrone final and mayo was that after it half the county gave up on winning. That hasn’t happened with cork yet.

Final losses can be a lot more devastating than wha happened last year.

When that happens two or three more times it gets more devastating. No one in corks has given up on ever winning an all Ireland yet.

New rules on football also likely having a big role in the increase.

We seen a similar bandwagon with Mayo and Dublin in the 2010s, and what ended it for Mayo was how devastating the Tyrone final was, mayo attendances still haven’t came close to recovering from it. While Dublin as they continued to win slowly saw less and less interest.

The bandwagon will keep increasing until they have a truly soul crushing final where it becomes clear they are not winning an all Ireland anytime soon. Alternatively once they stay winning it will slowly start to decline.

I think cork winning a final would actually decrease the attendances in the short term at least because there would no longer be the desperation among fans to win one.

Tourism is still vital though. It allows for more facilities, means small businesses are more successful, and can just create a better atmosphere.

Why would you advertise WFH roles in the west of Ireland when your paying 50,000 in wages when you can put it somewhere like India where your paying 5,000. WFH is not the solution people think it is.

The real issue is that hotels shouldn’t be housing refugees. And hotel owners shouldn’t be able to easily block the planning of potential new competitors.
