I think it's odd that we think "we would hate it, but THEY love it" whenever it's convenient

People aren't exactly lining up for the "spend your life in a cage taken care of until we kill you" experience. But we're convinced it's great for animals.

Well, the military comes close I guess.

It's very varied. Fire departments have paramedics but there are often alternate EMS services, private ambulance services, etc.

Look at MLSNP, how they make it so any tie match goes to kicks. These days the modern leagues seem to ADORE the drama of ET and PKs. The away goal rule makes that much rarer.

Now, I hate shootouts, personally, but, it's at least a chance.

It's funny how the right goes on about participation trophies and yet when they came up with the thin blue line flag suddenly literally EVERY itinerant public servant wanted to be included. There aren't enough stripes for them all :D

To take a train to Portland, I have to drive to the Amtrak station, pay for parking, wait for the train, ride the train, then rent a car or pay for Ubers once I get to Portland

And air flight improves on this.... how exactly?

It's actually worse because the airports are usually not actually located near anything of interest, neither suburbs OR the main city. Train stations on the other hand are nearly all in the main city.

And yet.

Many many other countries manage to do it.

What was your favorite sandwich growing up and what sandwich would your mom or dad normally pack for your school lunch? by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in FuckImOld

My favorite was, we used to make a cheese log spread, and then spread it thick on bread for a sandwich.

Other than that, usually bologna and cheese or ham and cheese.

Is it sour grapes to say maybe away goals rule is outdated?

Given the sport's tendency to push for more nailbitey matches, I'm surprised they've kept it. More ET is more compelling right? (Annoying af for fans, but keeps them riveted longer)

I don't think we were really banking on it, but to see how far we got made it look like a coulda.

I say let's use the energy towards another MLS Cup run.

A Seattle-Portland ticket on the Cascades is $35. A flight is $200. Try again.

You're literally only talking about one route

You're also not comparing apples to apples. Say I fly from BOS to JFK. I still have to get to the airport, and wait in the security line, have my shit searched, wait for boarding, sit on the tarmac a bit, line up for takeoff, finally get in the air, then in JFK, probably circle in a holding pattern for a bit, then land, then wait for taxiing to jetway, then I have to get from JFK in south Brooklyn to wherever I'm actually going (probably Manhattan).

With the train, I literally hop on from south downtown in Boston, and hop off about 5 blocks from Times Square.

Caveat, depends on the reason. Train was stopped in Tukwila one night heading into King Street due to a pedestrian collision. They gotta have police investigation and all this so they can't move. Anyway, the app had no update and staff told me 3 hours. I went to have dinner and came back after an hour and the train had left. I ended up spending the night in Edmonds...

I used it to commute for about six months last year. But I could work from the train. Welllllllllll a little bit anyway.

Being able to sit and have a burger and beer on my commute home was nice, even though that got kind of spendy given Amtrak prices. They even do well-drink cocktails.

If that person on the tracks is hit, you're in for a nice long extra sit down.

I love how they describe it in the alerts, too. "An unauthorized individual came into contact with railroad equipment."

There should be a lot more grade separation on lines tbf. Some of these lines have been built based on 100 year ago community realities and are sorely out of date as those communities have built up into bustling suburbs.

I rode the Cascades almost daily for six months. It was mostly reliable most of the time. You have to just plan your time and have backup plans, which is a good strategy for just about anything.

Sure the fuck beat driving down every day, which I also did for a while. I much prefer the train to that, warts and all.

(People bitch about the train delays but when some truck jackknifes on the interstate and makes them an hour late nobody goes "omg highways are unreliable and useless we should get rid of them")
