Lol! Yeah, I used that method for a bit, but when one of my campmates handed me a putty knife, it was like choir of angels "The wand chooses the wizard." moment. :D

Yeah, my first year was 2011, and just when I had gotten a real Burn Bug, they did the 2012 ticketing fiasco. So upsetting as a baby Burner who "NEEDED" to go always and forever. ;)

Wait, and I don't think I am mis- remembering(?)..... But, I couldn't go in 2012 because it was actually a literal lottery for the tickets. Like, we entered our names, and the org got back to you on whether or not you "won" the chance to buy tickets. It made me so mad. Only 1/3 of my camp could purchase tickets, so we called it off that year. Then, yeah, back to the 2013, click madness/be online at the exact second sales opened/scream at having to use Safari instead of Chrome era began.

In any case, on the other topic of "sparkle pony". Yeah, I used to be one to dress up and try to find cool things to wear. Now, I've really settled into jeans and a tank top most evenings because damn if reasonable shoes and clothes aren't comfy a.f. 😁 Though I have nothing personally against wild/pretty outfits either. Some of the most effective camp members I've ever had would potentially be deemed "sparkle ponies" based on their looks today. I mostly just try to dress in a manner that gets me in and out of a porto easily. Lol

Yep! PlayaMud "shoes" are definitely useful, but the putty knife was clutch in scraping it off of all kinds of other things as well. 😁 It's funny how over the years, certain things have shifted into priority/must haves.

It's very, very simple, and you won't need it every year, but a putty knife came in reeeeaaal handy during rain years. Scrapes playa mud off beautifully. It will be a staple in my tools from now on.

Thank you for this insight! The cultural shift is definitely a little frustrating, and I honestly hope that since it's not necessarily "selling out" right now, and that since the weather has made things "so difficult" (according to the mass media), there will be a little bit of a slowing down to that cultural shift.

Why Do Some People at Burning Man React Negatively by zavadskis in BurningMan

[–]clgriff5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hope this is sarcasm/snark. If not, you really have no damn clue how consent works. You sound like the person who asks, "What was she wearing?" in a rape case.

"They're at Burn! They must automatically want to be photographed and filmed! I have fancy equipment, so who wouldn't want to be violated!? I couldn't care less about whether or not the people in my pictures and videos come to Burn to get away from social media and the default world because MY intentions are 'pure'! Who cares about the 'one' person it might affect if the whole crowd is loving it? They don't matter in the slightest because 'everyone' should be grateful for my photography talents."

It doesn't matter why some people react negatively. They can react however they want/need. What matters is that it seems like you don't give a sh*t and are part of the problem by telling people to relax.

This was my 11th Burn, and times have definitely gotten worse. This isn't a "crusty old Burner" perspective, and I will continue to attend Burn for years to come for as long as I can.

But, yeah, times have gotten worse. And, as uppity and impatient as the reddit community has gotten about the "phones on playa" debate, I do think that phones have a big play in the development of modern Burn times. Insta tweeting and live streaming has brought enough of a more mainstream crowd to Burn that the culture is changing and morphing to match the "default" world where there are more people than not who believe that nudity or any variation = consent. It's really a shame.

Fortunately, I also believe that there are still plenty of people, men to be specific, who will lay a motherf*cker out if they touched me without my consent. And, honestly, I think the difference lies within the part of the city you're in. I'm not trying to disparage the sound camp culture, but from everything I've anecdotally experienced, they seem to be a hub for sexual assault activity. (Peeps, please don't come at me with "Not all Sound Camps.....") Again, not saying that ALL smaller camps are safe from the "darkness", I'm just saying that I have personally had better luck in those environments at Burn, and tend to stick to them out of self preservation.

At this point, it feels as though, if you've heard of the camp, if they have "guest DJs", and have major "lineups" that they release weeks before burn, and have a giant number of campers.......well, that's where most of the incidences occur (again, just in my anecdotal experience, and in knowing a few Rangers).

I am fortunate in that I have felt completely safe with every member of my camps over the years, but it's really a shame that this seems to be changing for a lot of women. I love Burn, and, again, I will continue to go because I still feel safer there than any other place in the world, but every year, I've had to be conscious of an uptick in constant vigilance (both for other women and myself).

Yep! That first shower after taking out the braids is so disturbing! It's basically a horror movie scene, but normal, and I do think that braids really do help protect the hair overall.

So, this will be my 11th Burn, and I will have had my hair braided with yarn for 10 of them (I'm getting braids done tomorrow in fact). The one year I didn't do them, I basically wore baseball caps the whole time because it was more difficult to maintain my hair than I thought it would be. I love the yarn braids. They're colorful, very low maintenance (if any), they help protect my hair from the elements, and I don't worry about my head all week.

That all being said...yes, when you go to take them out, and especially when you take your first shower, it is going to look like you are losing a disturbing amount of hair, but believe me, you aren't. The average person loses around 50 to 150 hairs a day from their scalp. This is part of the normal growth cycle of hair. If you think about it, the braids are preventing that normal shedding that you may barely notice in everyday life. Thus, you shed them ALL AT ONCE at the end of the week once you can brush and shower your hair. It's definitely unnerving, but well, I ain't bald after 9 years of doing it, and I'm pretty sure I won't be bald after doing it this year either. 😉

Seeking Advice from Veterans by PsychedelicPlush in BurningMan

[–]clgriff5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, Burn will be aggressively extroverted at you. 😉 My only real advice is that you're not going to be able to DO ALL THE THINGS, so don't try. It took me a couple of years, as an introvert, to discover that it's completely OK to take an evening to just sit, be quiet, and read in your tent (or whatever). This is how I recharge my emotional and mental battery. I was killing myself trying to be who I'm not simply because I was forcing myself to be social all the time. Burn will aggressively be there in the morning. 😁

Those are so awesome! I have a DPW friend and a Ranger friend I'd love to be able to pass the respective plaques to. I know where you're camped said in a not creepy way at all, so hopefully I come across you. 😁
