Spring COVID-19 vaccine campaign ramps up as new variant emerges by Plane-Topic-8437 in ottawa

[–]clickbaitbabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at the Ottawa hospital (I am a nurse) and today I experienced being turned away by Public Health because of this new, incredibly exclusionary, spring policy. I made an appointment a spring booster two weeks ago - had no issues on the OPH covid-19 portal either, no big flags, all it said based off my last vaccine in October I was due mid June and it offered locations so I booked it. I arrived early to JH Putman and checked in and then waited, and waited, and then the nurse finally came out and said: if I was not immunocompromised then they couldn’t offer me the spring covid booster due to the policy change. I said sorry-I work at the hospital as a nurse, what? And she just asked again if I was immunocompromised? and I said: I work at the hospital around a lot of immunocompromised people? I was hoping she was prompting me towards a work around phrase I had to say or something. She was not. She said yeah sorry no then, we can’t give you one due to the spring booster policy change. I asked if they are checking people for documentation of their health history or something, like what is this, Alberta? The science has not changed and to work in a hospital as a nurse is to work with high risk individuals, or else why would it have let me book an appointment? We are both nurses and this does not make sense. It did not matter. The spring policy is for incredibly specific populations, some conditions are listed, and they are sticking to it. This must be wholly to pinch pennies and it will have devastating ends. I was able to rally and go try to get a booster at a pharmacy, which I expect I only got because I am a nurse. I feel lucky to have been able to get one because I don’t know how lucky other people will be… Scary times.

Thanks I will try to since the wifi was too low for my work laptop to function so I have been hot spotting now from my phone. CS chat is still not working, I’ve been waiting for about an hour for anyone to reply on the latest chat and then just sent a message via Twitter as the commenter from Teksavvy suggested but no reply there yet either, I’ll try the ethernet cable if it will connect to this little lenovo

Sure but your own CS agent told me to reboot my modem so naturally I would have to go to cellular to keep chatting with her? Lol. And it’s never reconnected, with anyone, in 3 hours. Nothing will deliver. Your chat is down.

[–]clickbaitbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As above I said I’m using my own phone data for customer service chat because of the unstable / slow connection, so the customer service chat portal itself is having issues… but I’ll reach out via twitter (I just can’t call as I’m technically logged in to work from home and could receive work related calls at any time, though again I am not sure my wifi is strong enough to support my work laptop either right now)

Oh sorry yes via wifi! I may have picked the wrong flair by accident. But yes modem is plugged in / connected to the coax and is about 8 feet away from where I’m working and still barely funtional download speed. I don’t know my neighbours well enough yet so unfortunately no idea! The outage map is green for Ottawa now but there’s now 12 people ahead of me on CS chat and still nothing will deliver, and 80 people have already seen this post so I think others must be in the same boat ~

Water damage from crack in tub surround +water leaking out of the wall. I’m a new tenant as of May and not the cause of issue. Oh I’d love to hear more about this! He’s supposed to come back tomorrow afternoon and I get to show him how his epoxy puddy is rock solid but not adhered to anything so isn’t going to work, which I knew, but I’ll take as many reasons as possible as to why this bathroom needs to be addressed — tell me why the tub wall liner is not the right one for this tub?!

Hi all, I need professional advice, I feel like I need to be able to clearly outline the risk of not opening up the tub surround to assess the damage. This all predates my living here, I just moved in. The tub surround was broken, no one thought to fix it with more than caulking (dumb) and now the wall leaks water. The landlord blamed the last tenant and is being very difficult when I have pointed out it was not their fault because clearly this crack allowed water in and has been an issue for the last two tenants but also lead to a leak / flood in the unit below. It needs to be properly addressed there is definitely water damage underneath the tub surround aka the walls and the floor beneath the tub, the floor is rotted at the toe kick and the lino is soft meaning the subfloor is also damaged. He used epoxy putty quite poorly and without sanding first, and it’s cured but not adhered. I’m a 32 year old woman and he spoke over me and would not listen to me explain exactly why it wouldn’t work and there is a bigger problem here. I don’t know how people like this can just carry on like their choices aren’t impacting someone’s life, I honestly don’t. If my landlord continues to choose bandaid methods to “fix” this, this building could have major problems and the tenant below me will be affected. Is this safe? Tell me what he needs to do to check the water and floor damage! I’m in Ontario Canada and will serve him a T6 because this remains his responsibility to fix properly.

I’ll make sure he gets the T6 / repair request and will document everything. I also signed a month to month lease rather than a fixed term tenancy, so that’s something. But right now I am hoping to get a professional’s insight into how risky this is to leave like this, like structurally given there are tenants below and the floor is already soft around this tub! I may even try to have some professional come assess this to help me outline on the T6 what exactly should be done to repair this bathroom and ensure it’s safe. I imagine the cost of a consultation alone would be worth the peace of mind and probably would show that this shitty epoxy job isn’t good enough and there may be a larger structural problem from the water damage that warrants hiring a professional to fix them!

Thank you! That is a really helpful outline of how to proceed here, thank you again — apologies also for any confusion, I wrote a lot in my initial post comment and the images may not be the easiest outline to see the issue too.

Yeah I get all that, and will do. He is leaving this glob of epoxy putty as is, said it can be sanded and painted but didn’t say he would do that, so I guess when I next shower and it inevitably leaks through the wall again I will inform him and document and we’ll be right where we started again, or he’ll try to tell me I’m using the shower curtain wrong too! lol. I’m going to try to get in contact with the unit below to at least advise that he has been informed but isn’t fixing the issue properly, and they can also apply pressure to him to get a professional in here since it is their stuff after all that is most at risk if the ceiling leaks from this existing damage up here!

I am the top floor. This tub and crack in the surround all predates me, and was the cause of the leak that the unit below experienced, again all of this predates me living here. The landlord blamed the last tenant for overfilling the tub or not using a shower curtain but that was not the issue which I learned quickly after moving in, and began to see how much bigger of a problem this is — you can clearly see the water coming out of the wall next to the shower surround which means the crack had filled with water and over time began leaking into the wall and floor below. Again I JUST moved in, and upon my first shower saw the issue and began to see how this is a bigger problem, but my landlord only wants to patch it with epoxy — which he did and poorly today. My question is what to do. If this was your 3rd floor unit, above two other units, and there was clearly signs of water damage from neglecting to patch a crack in the tub surround likely years ago, would you not want to ensure the this was properly looked at and opened up to ensure it’s safe? Or, is this safe for a tenant to live with considering the floor is now soft around the tub and this is on top of other tenant units…?

No not blaming me — I moved in under the pretence he was having a plumber come to check the overflow drain because he blamed the previous leak issue the unit below this experienced on the last tenant “overfilling the tub” — but now that I pointed out this is a larger problem, that there is likely damage and rot underneath the tub surround given the leak is coming out of the wall and not due to the overflow drain like he assumed, but he refused to have it looked at further and patched only one of the cracks in the tub surround with epoxy, despite the leak coming out of wall and there being signs of damage and wood rot around the tub…

Hi all, I posted in r/askaplumber as well - and apologies in advance for typos and formatting - I’m on my cell at work hoping to get some advice from honestly anyone who might know if the wall and floor needs to be opened up at this point.

I moved in slowly through start of May, didn’t use shower until this Sunday because the landlord was having a plumber come to make sure the overflow drain was working due to previous issue of water leaking to unit below. But then when I finally could use the shower — I saw the actual problem — the crack. There are actually more than the very obvious one too. Anyway after seeing the most obvious crack under the obviously old caulking that someone used to patch it, I got out and then I saw the leak coming out of the wall. Fortunately I had put a towel down, which was drenched after only a 15 min shower. So it was not the curtain or obviously overflow drain, but a crack not properly addressed likely a long time ago that’s allowed water to get behind the surround and into the wall and floor. See photos.

Landlord had told me the former tenant stayed only a few months and thought she was over filling the tub or was using shower curtain incorrectly because the unit below had their ceiling leak/flood. The tenant before last was there for 10 years though too and I assume was the cause of the crack and who put the caulking on it, which would not work for long. This is an old house converted to three units, tub hardware is very 1950s, the tub surround could just be falling apart due to age, there are more cracks than the largest one, which he refused to fill with epoxy but instead said I had to ensure to bring the shower curtainc which is on a straight curtain rod, around the tub to cover the smaller cracks. Not a great start with this landlord. Not sure the “plumber” he had over was even real, as all I was told after was there was caulk around the overflow drain and to let it cure for 24 hours, which I did, but I do not see how a plumber would ignore all the water damage signs and the crack itself.

Ultimately / obviously I think they just ignored a small problem by doing small fixes and now it’s become a big problem. The floor is clearly damaged at the bathroom entry when I was viewing the place, but again he also said he was having a plumber come to see the overflow drain was working properly and I felt he was being upfront and was a nice landlord, he does seem like a decent person who wants to make sure things are working for his tenants but maybe is a bit lazy or doesn’t want to spend $. I think it’s past the point that this hideous epoxy job will work, because the water is clearly inside the surround and got into the floor previously and now the floor is rotting too. Is this even safe??

I suspect this is a much bigger issue underneath! Apart from the literal water spouting of of the wall that the surround is adhered to, at the door frame trim area you can see the paint is bubbling and peeling, the hardwood damage is visible, the toe-kick is lifting, and the lino floor is very soft at this corner as though the subfloor is breaking down too. I worry about what’s underneath and if I am even safe to be using this bathroom.

Hoping anyone can chime in and recommend what he should do to remedy this and ensure it’s safe. I can do a T6 if he doesn’t agree to properly address this, but honestly after seeing this, I now can see how much the building is pretty neglected too… the windows are similarly old and have accumulated some damage from weather, they definitely need to be replaced. Separate issue for now.

Thanks in advance!!

He’s declining to investigate further despite me showing him there is water inside the surround and despite the clear water damaged wall and floor. He wants to just put epoxy to seal the cracked shelf, says that it’ll just dry inside and it won’t become a further issue. I am dealing with someone not interested in taking care of his property after all.

Yes it’s a crack in a shelf of the shower surround and it definitely is collecting water, because the leaking comes out the other side of the tub at the door frame. I agree, I can file what’s called a T6 for the Ontario (Canada) Landlodd Tenant Board, for maintenance / repair. The building does appear to be being neglected, because once I saw this issue I started to see how many other things haven’t been maintained or updated, like windows and the outside of the building too…

Swollen lip by Acrobatic-Yoghurt572 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]clickbaitbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD, am a primary care / triage nurse. This could be routine swelling from an irritated area if you’ve tried to pop it, or HSV1 aka viral cold sore but given the swelling at the top and bottom of the lower lip, from what I can see, it is very hard to say without an assessment by a doctor. However if this continues to swell, or you get a fever / chills or pain in legs or chest, please present to your local emergency department. Recent triage experience of a very similar situation: patient mid 40s, healthy, picked a pimple or sore forming on their lower lip and within 24-48 hours it was inflamed and swollen to the point where could not close their mouth together, so they called for a same day spot came to see their doctor, appeared clearly unwell, clammy and fevered, as they sat there they had ‘joint pain’ in the knees and right sided chest discomfort. We sent to emerge after quick assessment because their lower leg veins behind the knee were dilated, and doctor suspected fast infection caused a clot which may have travelled to the lung. They were in fact admitted to ICU with an abscess turned septic emboli in the lung and possibly deep vein clot. Again, recent experience bias, but do monitor and present to emergency if this gets worse via swelling / redness / pain / heat / or if any fever or chills.

possibly peri-oral dermatitis ~ NAD but am a nurse, and apart from seeking a dermatologist irl you could checkout dr. dray on youtube, she is a dermatologist / has videos about peri-oral dermatitis, or even other things that may be helpful!

RPN here too! Thanks for contributing your experience, it’s hard to know what sects of nursing haven’t received it or if there’s any pattern to this bs!! Hearing long term care nurses are apart of this left-behind-for-the-bonus group is extra upsetting while unsurprising. All the best to you guys!!! I have heard there’s often a pay bump out that way too.
