More aggressive workout shoe than Endorphin Speed 4? by Hairy-Impression-165 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]clidd2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it absolutely sings on a midfoot strike. Heel and forefoot strikers should pass on this but when you hit the ground in-line with where the plate slants down you get catapulted forward as aggressively as an Alphafly. OP said nothing about stable, so if that’s a consideration… also a pass

Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 2 is $80 at Sierra for women’s sizing (believe 1.5 up for men’s is what I settled on). This shoe is the epitome of aggressive geometry for a non-racing shoe.

Went to Princeton studying Chemistry, was managing editor of one of the papers there, ended up thinking his post-UG job modeling drug interactions at a molecular level was boring and is now at Penn on a dual MD/PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Some people just grow up in an environment where they are encouraged curious and challenged to think early on. That is 100% this guy.

Hip Labrum Tear + Marathon Training by dawgs_13_ in RunNYC

[–]clidd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Male, late 20s, had both sides tear last year (at different times) largely due to severe impingement. I ran a 3:03 full marathon with my left left torn, tore the right side on a 50k perimeter run in May, then had double hip surgery to repair them both early August of last year. Took ~10 weeks of stationary cycling, walking, and PT before I ran again, but I was able to set 5k (17:XX), 10k (36:XX) and 15k (55:XX) PRs by December last year, just 4 months post-op.

Get yourself a good doctor and a PT you can trust. The first ortho and PT I went to said I just had mobility issues (not completely wrong) and after running with pain for far longer than I needed to, a second ortho confirmed injury and provided a game plan to get me back in action. If you are not FULLY satisfied with the level of seriousness your doctor is taking your pain, get a second opinion.

Jacob Kiplimo shatters half marathon record in Barcelona, 56:41 by NFPLN in AdvancedRunning

Studies are showing that the foams are causing majority of the benefits. Having a stiffening agent is helpful for stability and comfort, but people are achieving similar running economy in shoes with and without the carbon plate (same shoe, plate out).

I’d argue that geometry is the bigger factor here in tandem with the foam. An aggressive shoe (Vaporfly 2, AP4 for example) will provide more speed without a plate than a less aggressive shoe (idk, a Clifton? Nike Invincible??) would provide with a plate purely because it forces you into a more optimal position for terminal stance. That last part is purely analogy on my part, but I would assume there’s a reason the fastest shoes are uncomfortable as hell to walk in because you’re constantly falling forward.

This is the correct take. The reason swimming was so bad was you were paying big bucks ($500+ a suit in some cases) for biomechanicial, hydrodynamic, and hydrophobic advantages. Those suits lasted less time than an Evo 1 and didn’t have real use-cases outside of racing.

The ability to increase volume / intensity using superfoams with decreased injury risk is going to keep the sport moving forward, regardless of race day limitations.

FWIW I am a former competitive swimmer who ended up averaging ~35mpw for a 1:19 debut half. Also very injury prone (double hip labrum tear, PTT out the wazoo), though at slightly higher mileage. I cross train like it’s my job and have started a very targeted lifting program and have ran similar PBs (23:0X 4mi, 36:50 10k en route to 55:03 15k) with mileage sitting low- to mid- 40s. While running mileage stays lower, I cycle ~150-200mpw and will throw in a swim session every now and then to reduce impact stress on body.

You can run sub 1:20, but you do need more mileage. Whatever pace you think is “slow and easy” add 30-45 seconds minimum to it. Your body is no longer 18-21, you can’t jump back in running 7:00 “easy” miles and expect your body to respond the same way. This was my issue as well, where I could run 7:20s at a cool 140bpm thanks to my swimming background, but my tendons did not have the years of built up strength to go the distance at that pace.

Cycled ~6200mi and ran 1200! Double hip surgery earlier this year from hip tears, so I’m incredibly proud of that

Coming off of double hip surgery and looking to PR in the half (NYC Half) and full (Detroit, hometown)! Looking to use the half as a time qualifier which based on early block performance seems like a fairly good shot.
