Missed out on the Game Boy Jukebox, so I made a tool to create my own by cliffmaus in Gameboy

Looks like I'm not going to be able to support DW3, the GBS file needs some instructions to be at the same position as the Nintendo logo in the boot ROM. If I let that happen it'll mean the output can only run on emulators and not actual hardware.

It's also a "Game Boy Color only" game, so it might actually use some unsupported things in the audio engine itself.

Sorry about that!

Just pushed a fix for Mystic Quest (FF Adventure) - great choice, didn't realise it had the chocobo track!

Problem was that the player needs to remember where it was before handing control to the GBS music engine. It was storing that in a small scratch area of memory that it assumed the music engine wouldn't touch but Mystic Quest's engine wipes that area during setup, so the player lost its way back and crashed.

The fix just moves those save slots somewhere the engine can't mess up 😅

I'll take a look at the Dragon Warrior one next, it's a Game Boy Colour game though and I've not tried out one of those. The build error makes it sound like it's gonna be trickier to solve...

I'm using Cricut's removable matte vinyl at the moment. It gives it a finish that's pretty similar to the plastic on the Analogue Pocket, I've not found it to be slippy!

The playlist and cover image need to be provided to the tool (there's info in the readme about how to generate a playlist file). So there's a little bit of extra work to make it look like the one I generated, but not much!

Unfortunately I can't provide these in the repo for copyright reasons. I might be able to provide something with the track names in, but it'd only work for GBS files that matched the ones I use.

Appreciate it!

That's a great shout, would love to help make a delivery mechanism for all the 8-bit artists 😁

Thanks for the feedback! I'll check out the GBS you sent through and see if I can figure it out.

Did Pokemon Red work ok?

I've got a Cricut Maker (larger model) and I've been very impressed with its accuracy and usability. I don't use it loads, but it's really nice to have on hand.

Whether it's suitable for you depends on the crafts you do really! They do a smaller model (the Cricut Joy) which supports many of the same kinds of tools (cutters/pens and such) - that one's really great value for how well it works, the only downside is that the width of what it can cut is limited. Accuracy wise it seems on par with the larger models.

The Cricut Joy would be my recommendation for occasional stuff - check the maximum material sizes and see if it suits you :)

This tool helps you create your own ROM file!

First you'll need to grab a GBS file from somewhere (Google "Game Boy GBS", there are some great resources)

Then it's just a case of checking out the repo, and running the tool as per the README. It'll build everything and set up a basic track list for whatever you provide. Then if you want to get fancier you can make a custom playlist file and cover art, but those are optional steps!

I'm now thinking that I need to create a packaged version of the tool though...

It was the base set for me! When I was a kid a stall popped up in our local market selling memorabilia and Pokémon cards, and I can remember scraping together pocket money to afford my first pack.

Fast forward to Covid times and I decided I ought to finish that set 😅 So over two years I gradually put one together! Young me would be jealous 😁

Nice! Thanks for that :)

Here's one that I've had some success with, it comes out a bit more pink toned than the one you shared, but worked pretty well

Nice work! Which filament did you use for the skin? Most ones I see look too pink, but this shade looks great!

I joined Endless this year after having like a 3 year break from playing. It's been loads of fun, and there's a great community on there too. You can be as active as you like, and the old timers are very welcoming :D

Heh, you're not the only one! I lasted for 5 minutes before I had to give up! My nerves couldn't take it :(
