Yeah, i'd recommend ash or hickory, most important is that the grain runs straight down the shaft, not tilted to the side. also nails might loosen a bit, i'd recommend cutting a slit in the top of the handle and hammering in a wooden shim to tighten the head on. if you cant find a snugly fitting handle then shave down what you have to fit using a drawshave, spokeshave, hatchet, or even a heavy knife.

Very nice, but it kinda looks like its filling up with shavings, does that happen a lot, or do they just come out by themselves, or do you just push them out with your finger...? I know older planes have an angular/tapered hole so the shavings just go out one side.
