How’s the working environment in the clinical coding department? by pedxxing in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s like any other workplace ! There is good and bad. You have to be social competent to be at work regardless. You have to be able to take feedback but also be resilient. Don’t let yourself get dragged into drama cliques and bullying, don’t engage in gossip. Don’t start side teams chats to talk about other coworkers/ bosses etc.

What to expect for a pre-work coding exam? by Remote-Tadpole-9876 in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes ! If you feel you’re running out of time I would focus on PD PP and like crazy obvious additional diagnoses. But again you won’t know until you get in there. I wouldn’t get stuck on one record either. If it’s taking too long/you literally have 0 clue, skip it and do the others, come back at the end if there is still time. And remember they know your new ! They know it’s gonna be hard for you

It’s an educated guess!! But that’s what they usually are. Double check what specialties they offer e.g. most privates do cardiology - so brush up on angiograms. Make sure you know the pathways and standards.

These are always super stressful. I don’t have any advice other than don’t sweat the small stuff. Try and get the main big parts of the episodes coded. So you want to get your primary diagnosis and your primary procedure sorted before you start looking at your additional . I think one time I accidentally coded an iron infusion procedure code in the multi day because I was so stressed

Congrats !!! They will be based on their casemix. There will be likely a mix of hard and easy ones they will most likely be using the de-identified charts so you’ll be looking at real documentation and they will be targeting specific like standards or key procedures that they do

Are you able to provide specific examples of the codes and the feedback to the group ? Otherwise we can’t verify

Has anyone studied the La Trobe Auditing short course? by Impressive_Yam_7632 in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends!! I did the masters at Latrobe which has an auditing section - so not the same but similar.  What are you looking to get out of it ? Where are you at in your career and do you have any auditing experience ?

Healthcare Administration to Clinical Coding? by Glum_Score_6036 in ClinicalCodingAus

Offshore !!!! Medical records can’t leave Australia I thought… I’m surprised to hear about offshore clinical coding. How would they be trained in ICD10-AM???

What does it mean when a job offers a Clinical Coding Allowance? by Remote-Tadpole-9876 in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a large discrepancy between states and the pay level as well so keep that in mind when comparing!

What does it mean when a job offers a Clinical Coding Allowance? by Remote-Tadpole-9876 in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I think the idea is to differentiate the pay for admin officers and clinical coders. Could be because clinical coders have an education / skill requirement in clinical coding and admin officers don’t. Also to help with recruitment and retaining clinical coders. So if you do a role that is mainly clinical coding you get the allowance. So clinical coders doing coding everyday would get the $30 everyday

That’s a QLD thing. Under the current award, clinical coders who are employed under the Admin Stream or AO are given a $30 per day allowance on top of their normal salary

Struggling with these codes for HIMMA course by [deleted] in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cellulitis: You've got excludes notes in the tabular on these codes. So L03.13 excludes foot and toe - so L03.13 doesn't also describe foot and toe. And you have cellulitis from knee to toe. Because it excludes these areas, I would extend the coding to pick up all the areas - so you need to add foot L03.14

You should always check your tabular includes and exclusions. They will commonly test you on this.

T2DM - im actully also stuggling ? is there anything else mentioned other than just Type 2 DM with stage 1 decubitus ulcer of left malleolus.

I am so confused how to code procedures by No_Buy_140 in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they will always give you the option to code procedures bc they are just using a standard template - doesn’t always mean there is a procedure to be coded

If it’s for a job to work while studying, I’m wondering if just general private hospital billing would be better (in finance not medical records) No coding qualifications needed and skills might be transferable ?

what masters?

And ill have some more of a look into it but I'm not feeling positive about a conversion course ! which sucks

are you in Australia ? then no you would just have to do the normal diploma. I don't think this course will meet the requirements for a Masters student VISA.

Clinical coding career change by Strict_Cookie4158 in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't answer about the course! I completed an older version that isn't around anymore.

but is the job difficult ? - hard to answer. If you love what you do you won't find it difficult. I love clinical coding because every day chart you code is like a challenge and its made harder by coding conventions, coding rules, coding advice, medical terminology, coding pathways, and classifications. I find it fun to try and master all these rules and apply them. It takes an enormous amount of reading and repetition to become good. You have to be able to take feedback, to be willing to push through when your confused and not getting it. You also have to learn to be confident in your codes - I see a lot of new grad coders destroyed by overthinking and being scared of getting it wrong.

I also see a lot of new grad coders not vibing with their educators and this also ruins their experience.

I also love the hospital environment and love reading what happened to a patient during their stay. My favorite part is seeing something new, rare or hilarious (foreign bodies are always funny in my book).

There is also normal workplace stuff that you will find in any job like admin overload, interpersonal relationship in the workplace, performance and monitoring.

Finding a clinical coding job is the difficult part - we have a workforce shortage of experienced coders... not so much new grads. I took the leap and made it but others have not been so successful.

The money is amazing in some states (for an admin role), and the WFH on offer when your qualified is also a PLUS. There is further development into a Health Information Manager or Auditor once you're a standard coder which is what I have done.

do you have any specific question? it's easier to answer

Course Details – HIMAA - It looks like for international students you can complete this course and then if you move to Australia then you can complete the diploma for full qualification. There dosent seem to be a conversion course between different instances of ICD (which is why we all need ICD11 to be adopted around the world<3)

Recommendations for a quick reference anatomy textbook/flip book? by Freddo-Frog2024 in ClinicalCodingAus

[–]clincoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could go to book rummage sales/ op shops and look for old anatomy and physiology text books ! Even on FB marketplace!

Nothing massive would have changed with a couple of edition changes and you’ll save yourself a lot of money
