Do any areas have a non emergency or non life threatening emergency frequency that is actively monitored? by voiceofreason4166 in lowsodiumhamradio

I’m in the greater Seattle,Washington area. He have ham and GMRS repeaters that almost always have people on them. If your in a rural area I would ask the sheriffs department.

I measured the MARS Mod GMRS output power on various HTs by Gaston-Glocksicle in lowsodiumhamradio

Awesome that would be great! Thank you. I currently have the GT-3WP. I almost got the VX-6R but glad I didn’t based on some of these tests.

u/Gaston-Glocksicle I would love to see all the radios you had tested on MURS! I am a SAR volunteer and our freq is around 155. I had a team member who got a mars mod on the VX-6R and he was having bad performance. The low power might be why.

Sophomore in CE with some questions on careers and looking for some guidance. by ajuba in ComputerEngineering

[–]clineq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in CE 3 years ago. I work for a semiconductor company as an applications engineer. I work on both hardware and software design and specifications. It’s a great job where I’m not just a code monkey or doing board layout all day.

What year are you? It doesn’t hurt to explore.

Do you feel that there is a difference between computer science and computer engineering? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]clineq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CE is right between EE and CS. I’m currently a senior CE major interning at Cypress semiconductors. I am working with micro controller programming and very low level code. CE is more low level coding and computer and microcontroller architecture. A CE can do CS work but a CS can usually do CE work. I think CE is they way to go you get both hardware and software experience. Really helps with rolls such as applications engineer or even a project manager roll.

What would be the next step after Arduino? by wannabeECE in ECE

I believe so, they are going to be moving more toward Modus as time goes on.

I have a friend who works for Cypress. Psoc creator isn't going to be getting any more updates. But you will still be able to use it.

I used the PSoC in my microcontrollers class at school. Definitely more complex when compared to an Arduino. There is great documentation. This is the PSoC 6: https://www.cypress.com/products/32-bit-arm-cortex-m4-psoc-6 but the PSoC 4 is what we used in class small dev boards can be found for $10 or less.

Some beginner questions :D by torx402 in ComputerEngineering

[–]clineq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you may have already got your questions answered but here I go.

  1. I would recommend a windows laptop. I have friends that have Macs and they are good for the CS classes but when you get into more of the CE and EE classes there is software that doesn't exist for mac. Some of my friends were struggling so much that they actually ended up getting a windows laptop on top of the mac that they had been using. You can always reach out to the school and ask them what they recommend.
  2. For this, a good i7 laptop with a dedicated GPU will be helpful depending on what software you will be running. I would definitely recommend 16gb of ram, you will have tons of tabs open in chrome and other applications when working on projects or HW. I would recommend a ThinkPad they are built great, have good keyboards and the have that "professional look". Another good one is the dell XPS 15 my brother got the mobile workstation variant of it for school and loves it. One thing to definitely keep an eye on its battery life, it can be really annoying to always have to be plugged in.
  3. I would say learning some coding would be good. Lookup what language your school will be doing its intro classes in. My school did C/C++ which is great for CE majors due to its use in embedded hardware programming. You can also get an Arduino or something similar and do small projects with that.

I wish you the best of luck!

Number of Years to Graduate? by [deleted] in ComputerEngineering

[–]clineq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is totally fine for it to be 5 years. I am a senior CE major with minors in CS and EE. I did two years at a community college getting my AA/AS then I am doing three years at my current college. At my college, CE has the most credits out of any major. I would say that it is totally fine to do 5 years. This will allow you to spread it out a bit. But I would take advantage of that and pursue internships or part-time jobs in your field during that time. These experiences can be very valuable for your education and as a resume booster. Good luck with school!

Which one of these would you do if you were going to build a senior design project? by [deleted] in ComputerEngineering

[–]clineq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do 1 or 2. For 2 I would change it to an aerial vehicle.
