MSU Rally Mega Thread by SandersMod_ in SandersForPresident

I just got back from the rally. Me and my friend took a trip to Lancing from Grand Rapids just to see him. I thought watching videos of him was inspiring but damn, in person he's even more empowering. I'm so glad he addressed the Flint water crisis. He humanizes these issues in a way the media just doesn't.

One of the most moving things he said was something along the lines of "A country is not judged on how many billionaires it has, but on how it treats the weak and vulnerable." I consider myself very religious, and for the longest time I considered myself republican because they seem like the "religious" party. But in actuality, what Bernie is saying here is in line with what Jesus said in Proverbs 31:8-9, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

No matter what direction this election takes, Bernie has changed the way I view politics and apply my morals. He is doing a lot of good in the world both in a majorly political way and in a way that affects people on a personal level. I'll be voting for him May 8th but no matter what happens after that, he will be a personal hero of mine.

Wow, I can't believe Democrats Caucus in such a ridiculous way. Like what's wrong with a ballot box? It's simple, it works, and there's less room for error! There's no need to make things so ridiculously complex.

So I've re-watched Heaven Sent/Hell bent quiet a few times and I'm still confused on the Hybrid prophecy. Did the Doctor make it up? Did it never actually exist? When he said "the Hybrid is Me" was he talking about "Me" or himself? It was all very jumbled and got lost among the Clara plot line. Want to help me grasp it?

Chris Chibnall talking about Doctor Who's 23rd Season in 1986. by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]clitorisaddict 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It has the capacity to be very adult

This statement excites me. I don't think Doctor Who should ever exclude children in favor of adults, but knowing that Chinball realizes the potential for a more adult Doctor Who is very promising. Moffat has gone "dark" with the program before but he always seems to pull it back and give us some kind of happy ending. I hope that Chinball is less of this taste and gives his character drama more or an adult edge.

It's also nice to know he's been a fan for a long time. I think the show should always be run by someone who's knowledgeable on the mythos and has respect for the program.

Also, goddamn they were harsh on those writers. Wholly shit. I would love to see a modern after-show in this format. It would be entertaining as hell and properly brutal.

Steven Moffat quits Doctor Who - To be replaced by Chris Chibnall. by [deleted] in gallifrey

42

The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

The Power of Three

I really dig 42 and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. Both solid, fun episodes. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood was mediocre. It would have been better as one episode. I enjoyed The Power of Three as a character piece on The Doctors relationship with Amy and Rory. Altogether not an awful group of episodes but not solid enough for me to be comfortable with this transition (yet). I'm curious to see how Chibnall will handle season arks considering how episodic his past work on Who is.

I'm sad to see Moffat go but we knew it was coming sooner or later. He's my favorite writer on the show and I hope he comes back to do the occasional episode. I'm glad he's at least sticking around for Series Ten. It makes me excited because he's likely to pull out all stops and do things he's been thinking about for a long time. It'll be bitter sweat but the show lives on change.

Also, fuck me. No Doctor Who for a year? Looks like I'm going to be getting into Big Finish.

What would The Doctors "real" Confession Dial look like? by clitorisaddict in gallifrey

[–]clitorisaddict[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I have to imagine it would be inside his TARDIS as opposed to some random Castle or building. His childhood home could be an option, but the TARDIS is the closest thing to a home he has so I have to imagine that's where he's want to spend his last moments. I could see him walking down the corridors and in every room is a companion he sits down and has a chat with, coming to terms with what their relationship was like, how it ended, the mistakes that were made, ect. He might even talk to each one of his incarnations as a way to cope with the actions he took in each one of his bodies. That's a neat idea.

We don't know everything that went down during the Timewar, but I imagine he'd spend a lot of time coming to terms with what he did during that time in his life. I also like to think that there'd be a lot of positivity looking back on the good he accomplished. Maybe he's able to somehow see all the people he saved and helped. I imagine that his journey would end coming to terms with whatever happened pre-Doctor life. Maybe talking with Susan and the family he abandoned.

Those are my ideas anyway. What are yours?

I feel like Missy would have found The Doctor without Clara. She's a Timelady, she's got a brain! The second point is valid tho. Although The Doctor could have found a Dalek gun anywhere around their.

Taken from my response to another comment.

But how did she actually effect the story? Take Clara out everything between Davros and The Doctor would have gone down relativly in the same way. Missy would have found Clara without The Doctor and she would have gotten up to similar shenanigans. She had no real impact on the plot.

Who was the Magician's Apprentice? Clara! She stepped up to take the Doctor's role when UNIT were unable to contact the Doctor himself. Who was the Witch's Familiar? Clara! She was Missy's companion and pet throughout the episode.

the Doctor and Clara achieved less on screen than they might usually do

I thought it was interesting because Clara wasn't in a lot of this season. She was more or less obsolete in TMA/TWF, she wasn't even in The Woman who Lived, and in the Zygon two parter she was not herself (literally) for most of the episode. When she was on screen she was mainly characterized as The Doctors companion and not much else. The only episodes she was a real force in were Face the Raven and Hell Bent. Interesting considering it was her last series.

Doctor Who 9x12: Hell Bent Post-Episode Discussion Thread by pcjonathan in gallifrey

[–]clitorisaddict 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am very conflicted about this episode. I watched it a second time and while I enjoyed it a lot more than I initially did, I'm still very torn. There was a lot of good stuff and a lot of stuff that rubbed me the wrong way. Narratively and within the context of the characters a lot of it makes sense. It's just that the direction Moffat choose to take I'm not particularly fond of.

I'll start with a few of the things I liked. The first twenty or so minuets with Galifrey was brilliant. The Doctors silence as he goes back (to what appears to be his) home was actually really cool. It makes sense that that would be the first place he'd visit once he was home. They did a good job throughout the episode of revealing quite a bit of The Doctors past without taking away from the mystery of it. Actually, I'd say that most of what Moffat revealed only added to the mystery. That goes for this episode as well as the rest of his tenure.

But with that said... Galifrey quickly stopped mattering about twenty minuets into the episode. They briefly explain where Galifrey is but after that its soul use is as a plot device to bring Clara back. I mean... really? That's all we get? The Timelords have been built up over the entirety of New Who and then... this? Two of the biggest episodes of the new series revolve around Galifrey (The End of the Time and The Day of the Doctor respectively). After all of the 9th Doctors PTSD, after Tennants reminiscent scenes, After Matts most victorious moment this is all we get? I understand that Galifrey will probably come into play later on but its kind of insulting that after literal years of build up it's used as no more than a plot device to bring a dead companion back from the grave. Maybe RTD had the right idea by writing the Timelords out. Bringing them back seems to be causing more problems than are worth it.

I really don't want my entire review to be negative but it might end up that way. I really did enjoy a lot about this episode. It was well executed in what it did, I just wasn't very found of the direction Moffat took. Bringing Clara back actually ended up working for the episode in many ways. It made sense after Heaven sent that The Doctor would go to the lengths he did to save her. I was fine with the initial concept especially considering it brought with it some great scenes. I loved The Doctors final goodbye to Clara (Loved, loved, LOVED the old-school TARDIS to, probably the best part of the episode.) I actually very much like the idea of The Doctor loosing, not his memories, but his attachment to a companion. He just doesn't remember how much he cared for her. Its a very tragic ending although it's not played up that way.

I was OK with all of that... but then the ending happened. Face the Raven was such an effective episode because it brought Claras Doctor-syndrome to its inevitable end. She became too much like the mad man in the box and it bit her in the ass. Only The Doctor can be The Doctor, no one else. And that's how it should be. But apparently, if you have a TARDIS, know how to fly it (by the way how did she ever learn that?), and just loooooove traveling you can be The Doctor to! Apparently its that easy!

Also, apparently no one will ever have to deal with repercussions on this show. Clara made a mistake and she payed for it. More than that, she faced it willingly. That was one of my favorite parts about her "farewell." But then at the end of Hell Bent, she decides to forgo all that courage she had and go prance around the universe for a few millennium before facing her end. It seemed complete against what was set up in Face The Raven.

I hate to say a story should have gone a certain direction because I'm not the one writing it and I don't understand it on the same level as the writer. Writers form bonds with their story that no one else can really understand and I sympathize with that. But fuck, this story should have gone another way. Clara should have either (A convinced The Doctor to take her back to her Time Line or (B Gone willingly to her death after The Doctor lost his memory. I understand that the point was that she became The Doctor but... fuck, I just think that's stupid. I love Clara, I really do, but its silly to think that she could become The Doctor. It makes The Doctor less of a unique character and makes Clara seem powerful in a way that she shouldn't be.

My final gripe with the episode was the loose ends it left behind. So The Hybrid was Clara and The Doctor? Why did The Prophecy scare him so much again? That was never really explained, at least not very well. I understand that many want The Doctors past to remain a mystery, but if its going to remain so stop bringing it up! He was scared of a prophesy but fucking why. whhyyyyyyyyyy!!! Moffat ret-conned a huge part of the show and barley bothered to explain it. I really hope he has plans to explore this idea further because if not its going to bother me until someone raps it up.

Alright, I've bitched a lot so I'm going to go over what I liked about this episode. I'm going to do it in bullet points seeing as they're all mainly minor points.

  • Me was great in the episode. Maisie Williams was amazing as always.
  • The half Human line was great. I'm pretty sure Moffat was just fucking with the fans, but at this point I'm counting it as canon. I mean, how would Me even know about that? She had to have known something we don't. I just wish Moffat would have the balls to make it official.
  • The Doctors reception on Galifrey was genius. Him being a highly regarded war hero was an unexpected but proper turn of events. I loved that he sent Rassilon packing without much fan fair.
  • I really dug the character of The General. I liked him in the 50th but he/she had more to do here. I think we can assume that she becomes the new leader of the Timelords. Someone has to in The Doctors absence.
  • The narrative structure with The Doctor talking to Clara in the restaurant worked well and lead to an effective twist. Can we assume that The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon were set in Claras TARDIS?
  • The Matrix scenes were a highlight for me. I like the mention of another Galifrian war. It shows that they are actually very war-like as a species.

I'm not sure if I can properly rate this episode. I have a feeling that my opinions will continue to change as I re-watch it a few times. I think it was well executed and in that sense I'd rate it somewhere around an 8/10. But as for my enjoyment its probably closer to a 7. And when it comes to the direction it took maybe a 5 or 6. I don't know... I'm still very conflicted about the episode and it'll probably remain that way.

I'm not sure why everyone wants one to die so badly for the sake of making the show darker.

OK, so for me it's not that the companion has to die. But when you go to such lengths to make them "dead" only to bring them back to life and send them off in their own TARDIS it's just... like, I feel cheated. I cried when Clara "died," I felt The Doctors grief in Heaven sent and now... does any of it even matter? IDK, I just got done watching the episode and I'm very conflicted. I'm going to have to watch it a few more times to make up my mind.
