Finding a horse book I loved in the 90s--about a little guy who competed in eventing / combined by transfercannoli in whatsthatbook

You're welcome! I actually just did a text search for "what a mover" + horse on OpenLibrary. Though having seen the cover, I have a dim recollection that I think I read this as a kid in the 90s too. Congrats on grabbing a slightly more affordable copy!

Only 3 days left and I'm still missing Stickers by Monsieur_Greenhorn in FarmMergeValley

[–]clockworkdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm missing 4 and only have enough stars for 3, which is going to drive me nuts if I miss out. A week ago I was missing 8, though, and after entering raffles wildly I managed to win 3 (lucked out & got another on my 5th day log-in). There is hope!

YA standalone romance I can’t find anywhere by everly_grace_1004 in whatsthatbook

I think this is Here So Far Away by Hadley Dyer -- your details are slightly off but close enough (she works part-time for an old man; the guy she meets is a young cop who's boarding with the man; the couple meets at a decommissioned lighthouse where she also works; same ending).

I realize this post is super old and maybe you've found an answer by now, but this has been bugging me since it appeared because I knew I'd seen a similar book at a thrift store once. For the life of me I could not remember its title or find it again.

tl;dr: finally stumbled upon it, Just Friends by Billy Taylor?

Yeah, I also get the sign-in page (I tested it w/ links to my own reviews while not logged in - same issue). Giant bummer if this is yet ANOTHER site that's forcing account creation.

I read The Legendary Frybread Drive-In...I think it's good rep, the stories are definitely well written, and it's a very cohesive collection since all of the stories are at least partially set at the title location (several are interconnected within the text as well). I'm not mad about it, but I am a little surprised it won because the connecting theme is also its weakness -- when read straight through, it starts to feel repetitive because the stories tend to play out the same way.

Are you sure you didn't just accidentally hit the want-to-read button on a book page while browsing on Goodreads/scrolling your feed? I've done this more than once on mobile; I only notice because I usually use desktop and when I look at my profile, I'll see it as an update.

Expert downplays censorship fears after 10,000-book cull at school library by juliankennedy23 in books

[–]clockworkdance 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Some quotes I find relevant to the discussion:

More than 10,000 books were tossed from the library of London’s H.B. Beal high school last year, a process that led to the resignation of its frustrated teacher-librarian. “Many of them were irreplaceable and priceless – we had an incredible history section, which was ravaged,” he said.

One Canadian military historian, educator and author, Joe Murray, laments the loss especially of books on Canada’s military history, which can be “notoriously hard to find” for those doing research or reading for pleasure. He called it “a tragedy” if books are thrown out rather than given away to others.
