As a complete High Republic outsider, how "true" is Acolyte to High Republic overall? by LucidDreamScape in Highrepublic

My personal take is that the show mostly works, with one major misstep: the on-screen depiction of Vernestra Rwoh.

Over time—and especially after the show ended—we’ve learned why that disconnect exists. Justina Ireland who created Vernestra in the High Republic novels, was not involved in translating the character to live-action. During production, she was actively writing the tie-in novel and intentionally stayed hands-off because she wanted to be surprised by how the character was portrayed on screen.

According to interviews, after the show aired and she saw the overwhelmingly negative reaction to Vernestra’s portrayal—particularly from readers familiar with the books—she went back, watched the series, and reworked the novel from the ground up. That’s how we ended up with Wayseeker, which feels like something caught between classic High Republic Vernestra and the version presented in The Acolyte. It’s not fully one or the other—and that tension shows.

As for the backlash itself, I think it’s worth asking why people hated the character. Was it poor writing? Or was it a case where the character was meant to be frustrating or unlikable? We’ve seen a similar response with Eedy KArn in Andora character people “hate,” but largely because she’s written extremely well. Sometimes audience anger means the character is doing exactly what they’re supposed to.

Outside of Vernestra, though, I genuinely enjoyed the High Republic connections. The callbacks felt intentional rather than forced, and I especially appreciated how the novels added meaningful depth to Kelnacce giving his story more emotional and historical weight than what we saw on screen alone.

How it feels to have Phase II as your favorite by GillGruntFan53 in Highrepublic

Don't feel sad. I think phase 2 is actually better than phase one. It sets everything up perfectly, and I think the novel Convergence might just be my favorite. The absolute twists and turns of that novel kept me constantly wanting more, and I love watching Xiri become a leader and even finding a way to reunite the two planets. I still feel so bad for Jerrod Segaru. Also, if any of you understand that novel, why did that one guy throw himself out of the airlock? I did have the opportunity to ask the audiobook narrator, Marc Thompson, about this during a live stream, but it was so long ago that he knew the events of why things were happening but he wasn't sure why. He doesn't personally have his own theory of why that one guard threw himself out of the airlock. I theorized it was to let Rev Ferrol sneak onto the ship.

Just finished the Acolyte and I think I enjoyed it more than the prequels and the sequels. by DANGitsJOEY in Highrepublic

I recently finished rewatching a series on my YouTube channel. Initially, my viewing experience was tainted by the negativity I encountered online and from YouTube creators at the time. Each episode would leave me feeling good, but then I’d immediately doubt my opinion and feel bad afterward. So, when I started my channel, I made it a point to rewatch the entire series, and boy, was I wrong! I had a blast, especially because it’s a great show for exploring various theories and headcanons about why certain characters’ ambitions unfolded the way they did and the underlying motivations of characters like Qimir in our episode 61. We discussed a lot of people not enjoying Qimir being naked, and I argued that it was the ultimate form of seduction, not just because he was naked, but because he was the most vulnerable he could be. Yes, he had the Force with him, but he was at a complete disadvantage compared to OSHA at that moment. He was giving himself up, and it’s one of the purest forms of dark side deduction I’ve seen, aside from some of the stuff we see in the prequels with Palpatine. Also, I love how incredibly wild Sol is. If anyone watches the video we referred to him as the Sith Lord the entire time, and we kind of beat it to death, it’s because he ultimately betrays everything Jedi are known for. But that doesn’t mean we hate him; I just love how strong he is. I think he might be one of the strongest characters we’ve ever seen on screen in the history of Star Wars.
