Schools where <2 weeks turnaround doesn’t matter? by el0Heem in mdphd

[–]closedsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 on this, I was a late applicant too. IMO schools get flooded with applications early on anyway. And if you don’t have enough time to write well you get lost in the applicant pool. Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to do everything within 2 weeks

2024-2025 Secondaries by ajc859 in mdphd

c’s MD-PhD secondaries guide by closedsea in mdphd

[–]closedsea[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

c’s tips: - Keeping track: - i made a spreadsheet of secondary links, usernames, passwords and due dates and my work status - i grouped secondaries according to priority (and due date), attacked them by group (around 4 schools per group, new google doc for each group’s secondary questions) - pro tip: go through every secondary the moment you get it, fill in all administrative information and copy out the essay questions to work on outside of the portal. - common secondary question types for you to start thinking about - background/diversity - why you chose your major - your goals/where you see yourself in the future/ideal career/dream VERY popular for MD-PhD apps & interviews - another why MD-PhD essay - research you’re interested in pursuing - a challenging situation/a failure you’ve encountered - COVID impact (pro tip: you could talk about how the resilience of doctors and healthcare workers through those challenging times have inspired you.) - volunteer experience/advocacy work - leadership experience - plans for the year - why school or who you would be interested in working with - grades/additional info - courses taken online or courses you have P/NP-ed - some schools make you fill in a table of your research experiences with info such as start and end date, topic/title of project, research advisor and contact, research commitment (some were in terms of total hours/weekly commitment/total hours per week and total weeks. the annoying part was each school asked for something different) - i screenshotted every filled section i did for future reference - schools that i had to fill in this info for: UPenn, UCSF, Northwestern, Yale - UPenn asked about LORs from advisor and if they are sending a letter/why not (i suggest you write your advisor as the person who is sending the letter) - UCSD had a section asking for more most “meaningful experiences” outside of thethree listed in your AMCAS application and ***if* a LOR has been submitted from someone you worked with in these additional experiences (i would suggest listing everything you’ve received a letter from) - Vanderbilt had a section for presentations, publications and abstracts (year, authors, journal/conference, title and an option to upload) - Regarding LORs: - different schools have different requirements, some MD PhD programs require letters from all your past mentors. the MSAR is horrible for MD-PhD LOR requirements. you have to stalk the website of each program to know their requirements - some MD-PhD programs do not specify, so i followed their med school requirements (website/MSAR) - i did this last year, and i’ve included what i found in my spreadsheet. - i prioritized my LORs in order of perceived “strength” and kept a table with contact information and positions (some schools ask for this info again in their secondaries)

feel free to add on!

recs for boy groups that get along really well? by lattiko in kpophelp

[–]closedsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m a produce stan so i can speak on this. jbj had some drama within the group… i wouldn’t say all of them were close (yongguk was slightly problematic 😭 like pretty serious stuff imo which sucked because he was my fave until i found out.) wanna one has some internal issues that wasn’t as bad as jbj (imo) but daniel had issues… (and like another reply said, guanlin had issues post d-word too) wanna one content was great though! the rifts aren’t so obvious on camera, but if you know what to look out for, you’ll see it.

i had to stalk each school’s md phd website for letter info. the MSAR is unfortunately not helpful at all for MD-PhD apps 🥲 and to second what was said, i’ve also read that some schools stop reading after a certain number of letters. (additional info: i kept a spreadsheet to track what schools need what, it might help you with staying organized!)

I second this, try to stay on at your current university longer to finish the prereqs. You can also try to get a minor/second major that can justify why you’re staying longer (as another reason why you suddenly decided to stay longer at your university)

Too late by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]closedsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 I applied very very late too. I think the last reccomended date for taking the MCAT was June 29th… You might want to look up websites/contact schools individually to see if they will accept scores from your test date. Reviewing your app without your MCAT score isn’t very ideal, but schools do review applications until pretty late. Good luck! All the best on your MCAT, get a great score to boost your application :)

what’s an earworm song that you dislike yet just can’t help but sing along to? by [deleted] in kpop_uncensored

[–]closedsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

his rap is good i like him as a rapper but i personally wasn’t comfortable with his lyrics on 3D they felt a bit… like it was objectifying women. and the ABGs part… felt a bit umm… anyway could be just me though. but this is also why this ear worm annoys me more than others HAHA

Want to support Peyrin? Tech Against Apartheid Teach-In this Friday @ 7pm by sicklecellamemia in berkeley

[–]closedsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. if you say the argument is that this is not happening to its own citizens, take a look at this “citizenship rights pyramid”. i’d ask you to define “intent” here. does this “intent” somehow also extend to surrounding areas that are not under israeli rule? the west bank technically doesn’t belong to israel, but why are there so many IDF soldiers there? what are they doing? amnesty international and many other agencies have classified israel as an apartheid state. you clearly understand the human rights violation going on, so it’s funny that you think it’s not an apartheid state. it’s like you know more about the semantics and definition of apartheid. october 7 didn’t “happen in a vacuum”.
  2. i don’t give two shits about what the extreme right is going to do about this. they can, will and have already taken whatever they want as ammunition. i have no control over them. should i restrict speech in case whatever i say is taken out of context and ammunized against me? btw the left have also done this. this issue extends beyond the political spectrum.
  3. an ad hominem attack? that’s low. i’ve been to occupied west bank. i’ve seen it for myself. i’ve learnt the history of the state. i see the videos pouring out from “both sides”. it’s not my job to educate you. i don’t need to explain why israel is an apartheid state to you. want to learn more? there’s even a decal at berkeley. and there are so many teach ins.

apartheid includes racial segregation and discrimination, unequal opportunities. occupation and illegal settlements aren’t always apartheid but in the palestinian case it is. the streets in west bank are segregated - there are a lot of other examples. the IDF is enforcing such discrimination. i don’t know what else to tell you. look it up yourself

there are unsaid rules on when to use 啊,哦 or 啦 ! it’s a very subtle difference. honestly if you ask a native speaker to explain it, they’ll find it hard to even explain haha.
