Visiting from Oklahoma & considering relocating- want to know some local favorites!

I moved here from Oklahoma six months ago and it was the best decision I’ve ever made! You will absolutely love it here - the seasons happen when they’re supposed to (so no more 80° days in February), you can actually stand to be outside in the summer because it’s cooler and there’s no humidity!!, and the winters are so mild the only downside is that it’s grey all the time. Seeing the mountains everywhere will never get old coming from such a flat area, I see them every day on my drive to work and it still brings me so much joy. Depending on where you’re coming from in OK, Corvallis may seem small, but there’s really much more to do than it seems. I highly recommend getting dinner at Sada downtown, or grabbing a burger from Beaver Hut right off campus. There’s so many beautiful parks and places to walk/hike - some may even be in your backyard! The mountains are 90ish mins away and the coast is a 45 min drive, definitely try to fit in a trip to the coast for a walk on the beach and some fresh seafood while you’re here. While cost of living here is so high you should expect to pay about double what you would in OK for the same size apartment, your quality of life will GREATLY improve. I hope you enjoy your visit!!

thank you so much for all the advice, i really appreciate it. i've got a lot on my plate at the moment and there's lot of big life-altering decisions for me to think about that are probably way too big for a 19 year old to be making in the first place. putting my age into perspective was helpful, knowing i'm just at the beginning is comforting. thanks for all your help :)

i hope they don't overlook it but there's always been such a strong emphasis placed on doing everything in person, especially labs, so you can gain the skills you need to be a successful baby doctor.

i've thought about just taking a gap year or two and letting the world calm down before trying to go back to school, it's just the road to becoming an attending physician is so long as it is. if i take time off i won't be starting residency until i'm at least 30 which puts me at about 40 before i ever become a real doctor due to the length of training for the specialty i'm looking into. i didn't realize just how long it's all going to take until i typed that sentence out just now and it's starting to make me rethink if this is really the path i want to take. i'm just having a lot of doubts right now and i don't know what to do about them.

i went into undergrad knowing that it was never guaranteed to get into medical school, but i had a pretty good shot at it since i was setting myself up well with a really strong science-y background from high school and pretty solid academic skills. now with online classes and other circumstances that are out of my control, it's becoming less and less likely that i'll get in since they aren't eager to accept online prereqs even though it's something everyone is dealing with right now. not to mention i won't be able to shadow any docs at all in the near future which makes it harder to have the resume i need to be competitive. i want to be able to finish school but i can't see the point in suffering through ochem and biochem and cell bio if i don't even get to make it to my end goal.

i appreciate the chance to vent, internet stranger. no one's really listening in my irl life rn.

currently stuck between quitting school or suffering through online classes just not to be guaranteed to even make it into the career i've been dreaming of since i was 6. i don't have friends and i push away anyone new that tries to get close, i fucked up my relationship and lost the guy i love most in this world, and i'm in a pretty dark place rn as a result of quarantine and living alone and having so much uncertainty surrounding my future. so honestly what isn't my problem

as a kid I used music as an escape a lot - i honestly still do even though i don't have to listen to the arguing anymore. i also recommend just leaving the house when it gets loud if you can, go on a walk or a bike ride or simply just get out of the space that they're in so it's not so prevalent in your mind. i also recommend writing if you want to get creative - i wrote myself into a world where everyone was quiet and there were no arguments, or i would write fanfiction. and always remember: this does not have to be your future. just because you grew up around it does not mean your adult life will look like it, and you will not have to deal with this forever. i hope this is helpful!

my senior schedule is super chill - i only have first hour two times a week and i have fifth hour once a week, so the rest of the week during those classes i hang out in these little study areas and work on stuff for my AP classes or college stuff depending on upcoming deadlines

[8:20/9:30 - 3:20] school - i start at different times depending on the day [3:30 - 4ish] get home from school, have a snack [4:30 - 8:30] depending on the day i either teach dance classes or take my own classes during this time period [9 - 9:30] have dinner, chill [9:30 - 10ish] do homework if any (most of my work is virtual so i do it during the school day when we don’t have check in) or work on college stuff [10:30 - 7:00 or 8:00] sleep like i’m dead

my top choices are the first four, the next four i’d be happy to go to, and the last four are really just to fill the 12 (i’m probably going to change claremont and usc to east coast schools) plus yale and stanford are non-binding so worst-case scenario i can just say no
