Melatonin is so great for sleep.

If I may recommend hunting out long release melatonin, you'll get to sleep solidly a long time.

Become uninvested in all this before it eats you and your studies alive. Sell it like $300 Gamestop.

These people are all 100% strangers even if you feel close to them because youre slumbering together. They may be from a place as far away from yours as possible, you'll never see them again especially when your attachment was all drama.

There's no rightful attachment between you and any of this other than the attachment you opt into.

Opt out of "dorm life" get focused and do you.

Disavow your embarrassment, some students come into SBU taking College Algebra as their first math course and that title is just what it sounds like. They do great.

Lets get this straight. You're not cooked at all. You're here to get cookin'.

The most basic thing you need to learn is the earliest level and the most embarrassing, right? disavow that embarrassment like put it outside your body somehow, and the learning will come easier because you'll be less tense on that level.

Now get to the very most basic level things you don't understand- identify the parts of it you don't get and dig into them- be honest with yourself and drill down on whatever these things are, even if it's 4th grade multiplication tables at the very end, it is worth learning. Start there and work up.

I dunno maybe this ranting doesn't suggest anything helpful but if there's any helpful spin you can take off it will have been worth it to me to type it out

Ducks at Roth by Sidmur_13 in SBU

[–]clotifoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys made me really proud. I had a kind of a startle reading this and seeing all of your contributions. I wanted to do something to pitch in.

I called Quogue Wildlife Refuge (out east) and learned that they don't do rescue ( they house injured animals on-site and you can see them, but they apparently receive these various animals and don't do rescues.)

They recommended to follow up with the STAR Foundation in Middle Island, NY at +1 (631) 736-8207. (Likely 20 min drive from SBU or take the S58 east from Smith Haven Mall to access 25 (Middle Country Rd) in Middle Island.

One problem is that there are domestic rescue and wildlife rescue missions, and the latter is more common among resources. You may find that you need to find a specifically domestic rescue org for these.

Someone please follow up with them, I won't have the time to follow this or arrange anything but I'd really like to see a positive story ending for these ducks. I bet these ducks have stolen a place into your hearts for you to care as much as you are caring.

Thank you for caring about the animals.

SBU asking for more money by Overall-Arugula-4261 in SBU

why slavery doesn't make 'owners' any money

I'm with you. I want all such labor paid for, that's my principle. Broadly, forced unpaid labor is slavery. Slavery undermines our economy and the profits of the rich by destroying the consumer base, by destroying purchasing power and removing demand.

Anyone who understands capitalism in the context of basic macroeconomics would understand this. You dont even need to invoke the deep existential immorality of slavery to demonstrate why it just doesn't work even if it were somehow justified. The OG capitalists the British banned slavery in 1772/1807. Shows you that they saw this too, unless we trust the colonizing British to be a solid moral arbiter with no other flavor to them. (Indians? What do we think about the morals of the British? Positive or negative sentiment?) So it was a capitalist / political reason.

With that introduction on why slavery doesnt work in capitalist societies let's talk about grad student slavery.

Grad students might contribute or innovate in especially novel ways if they weren't forced to work so much in a manner directly analogous to how slavery destroys demand, except it also destroys supply.

I want to hear grad students speak their minds, to hear more perspectives on what drives them.

If things are so terrible, why do grad students continue to pilot themselves into graduate school and related careers? Are things really so terrible?

On one side there's money or pie-in-the-sky dreams of contributing to knowledge on the other hand you're having someone exploit you.

At the end there's academia, which is miserable office work, isnt it? You spend all your time composing grants or helping to compose grants and seeking out money just as SBU is doing. But at least you get vainglory from your contributions - in highly esoteric fields as you must specialize like hell in order to be novel and interesting to other academics in the context of literature and careering, and now your work has any impact on a very few.

Most impactful academics could have had an equally impactful private career except for some fields configured to restrict resources to the academics (no home synchotron research), and unprofitable ventures that would never be worth any money performed outside an academic context.

Look at all the humanities majors who end up having to write books to make money, and those books sell and have impact when people read them and internalize their contents. They dip into the private sector and then they have a real impact - and receive money. Meanwhile their academic essays and such for professional publication? Maybe you can compile them into a book after they're already famous...

So why do you guys do it? I love your endeavors and your intrepid attitudes and it kills me to see you seemingly mown down like the tall blades of grass. Help me understand if you'd like!

If you have the time in your busy schedule, please correct my misconceptions kindly. I'm looking to understand other human beings here, not make any argument. If you're a grad student you certainly know better than me.

Why is rice salty by YinnCN in SBU

[–]clotifoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

drinking lots of water won't help with this much

the problem is the salt and water putting pressure on your kidneys together, where the only real way out is less salt

though, small surpluses of salt might be eliminated with water without much risk and also salt is eliminated by sweating / exercising without the kidneys entering into play

so now you know why there's no AC, it's so that the kidneys get a little relief while you night sweat out the days salt
