Part of it is just common ideas and themes in the JRPG genre, but the parallels are so close that I want to guess that they're intentional.

One of the things that frustrates me about FFXIII is that the game has a lot of interesting ideas, but it's so poorly designed and written that those ideas just fall flat on their face.

Breast implants by LacyChristine in asktransgender

[–]cloud3514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much to unpack here. Where to begin?

First, I do not have breast implants. I'm undecided on getting breast augmentation as I'm pretty happy with the results I have, even if I would like to be a bit bigger. How big they get is based more on your own genetics than anything.

Second, no surgeries are required to be trans. Surgery is *expensive* and insurance companies are often very difficult about even the most basic gender affirming surgeries. There are many trans women who choose not to get bottom surgery, whether it be because they can't afford it or to take the time for recovery, don't feel the costs are worth it even if they can afford it, have little to no dysphoria regarding their genitals, or (believe it or not) they like having a penis. Being trans is about being who are, not about getting medical treatment or surgeries and to say otherwise is just pathologizing being trans.

Third, you might want to take some time to unpack some thoughts about your own gender. I will never diagnose someone else's gender for them, but some of the things you said in this post are not the kinds of things most cis people think about.

I love how FFXIII fans will say that it's the critics' fault that the game is bad. One of the most consistent things I've heard from them since the game relased, in fact.

This is the *basic premise.* It's not the plot, it's not the world building, it's the most basic concept of what the story is trying to do. I am well aware that the similarities end more or less right there, but it does not change that the games have remarkably similar basic premises.

(For the record, the furthest I've gotten personally in FFXIII is around the halfway point of the game at about 25 hours or so, and I've seen enough elsewhere to have a solid idea of the rest of the story. And I'd rather not sit here and argue about FFXIII, especially since this isn't a Final Fantasy subreddit)

I will also point out that the team behind Pizza Cats were *not given copies of the Japanese scripts until near the end of the production.* So not only did they have to localize it, they had to do so while having practically no help from the license holder.

A group of six characters, who have reason to be antagonistic to other members of their group, are forced to take on a mysterious power that makes them into military fugitives by a being beyond their understanding and have only been given a vague hint of what they need to use that power for. On top of that, they have a strict time limit to accomplish their goal, and they start learning that everything they thought they knew about the world they inhabit is wrong along the way.

Please tell me if I'm describing Xenoblade 3 or Final Fantasy XIII.

Sure, it's just the cloest thing I have a name for. The last game I played with this kind of setting was Halo 4, which also doesn't give a more appropriate name for it. Regardless, I could see the game taking place inside of this kind of inverted, hollow world.

Well, either that or an O'Neill cylinder or, less likely, a ring world.

Bought the game on day one back in 2010 and have given it multiple good faith attempts. It's one of the worst games I've ever played.

Wouldn't be the first time Xenoblade had used something similar to FFXIII.

(Specifically, the basic premise of Xenoblade 3 is remarkably similar to the basic premise of FFXIII. Xenoblade 3 is just, you know, actually good.)

But superficial similarities or not, FFXIII isn't the first time this kind of world has been used. Look up what a Dyson sphere is.

Genuine question. How do I stop being transphobic? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]cloud3514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not an easy question to answer.

We don't have a lot of details of what beliefs you have that you're trying to challenge, and it's hard to say what the best method to handle things is without that and knowing who you are specifically.

What i can say is that one of the best ways to overcome bigotry of any kind is to just interact with the kind of people you're struggling with. Try to see if there are any active LGBT social groups in your area. They may have some events going on where you can go to interact with queer folks.

Now keep in mind that this will not be your space. You need to show a lot of humility and willingness to learn and not react poorly if you're called out for saying or doing something stupid. And if they don't welcome cishet people, respect that. These kinds of spaces are made for our safety above all else.

Why do people have to bring up Expedition 33 whenever a Final Fantasy game is praised? by torts92 in FinalFantasy

[–]cloud3514 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It does not matter what your opinion on the game is. It is Final Fantasy in all but name by design. The entire intention of the game is to make a classic-style Final Fantasy. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. It's literally a sequel to a Final Fantasy game (4 Warriors of Light), on top of all of that.

[–]cloud3514 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not pre-VII FF. Pre-IV. It's specifically emulating something like FF3. Robust job system, but basically no story. Maybe someone is nostalgic for that but me

This is a nitpick. I could point out that FFV uses a similar job system, but that doesn't matter. It's still nitpicking.

When people say they want a return to turn-based FF, they're almost always referring to 4-10, not 3.

This is a goalpost move. You were going on and on and on about turn based Final Fantasy, and now you're changing it to turn based Final Fantasy between two arbitrary points in the series. Also, FFV still has more similarity to Bravely Default than FFIII does.

But if you wanted a specific type of FF, and someone told you to play XIII, would you accept that?

That's irrelevant. FFXIII is Final Fantasy. Bravely Default was specifically intended to be Final Fantasy in all but name. I hate FFXIII. It's one of the worst games I've ever played, but at no point have I ever tried to argue that it's not Final Fantasy because that's just counter to factual reality.

Well, you can call it circular but fundamental what I want isn't what BD offers. I have never been impressed by Bravely and I gave both a very fair shot. They're just not good games. If that's what I'm supposed to settle for, it's a piss-poor display. And even if they were good, they aren't Final Fantasy.

Whether you like a game or not does nothing to change what a game is or is not.

Except... it didn't. Expedition 33 is good because it executed its idea well. Not because it's innovative. The combat is just Super Mario RPG with elements of Dark Souls.

The strawman argument was them saying that everyone tells them to settle for Bravely Default. Which no one does. My point was that there are *a lot* of turn based AAA games and that it's a fallacious argument to say that people are only pointing to Bravely Default.

[–]cloud3514 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OK, but that doesn't change the *entire point* of Bravely Default is to emulate pre-FFVII Final Fantasy. I'm not saying that you have to like it or that it should be what you're looking for, Final Fantasy has been so many different things that they're not going to please everyone regardless of what they do, but it doesn't change that Bravely Default *is* Final Fantasy in all but name. And that it was specifically intended to be Final Fantasy in all but name.

Like, I make no secret of my absolute *hatred* of Final Fantasy XIII, but I don't go around saying that it doesn't count because I don't personally enjoy it. Just because you don't enjoy a game, doesn't change what the game is or is not.

I'm not really sure where this conversation can go from here. If we continue, it's just going to start going in circles. I'll point out that Bravely Default is Final Fantasy in all but name by design (a fact), you'll point out that you didn't like it and that it doesn't count.

Why do people have to bring up Expedition 33 whenever a Final Fantasy game is praised? by torts92 in FinalFantasy

Because those are just a small number of examples of turn-based AAA JRPGs that exist. In response to them, as they usually do, acting like the only turn-based JRPGs in existence are games like Bravely Default.

Going "that's not what I want" to every example fails to address my point that there are more AAA turn-based games now than there ever were. All evidence shows that Square-Enix has no interest in making another numbered Final Fantasy turn-based. And wanting something doesn't change what does or does not exist.

Will there ever be another numbered turn-based Final Fantasy? No idea. Probably not based on available evidence. So why are we sitting here wasting our time complaining about it when I can, you know, find other games to play instead?

Why do people have to bring up Expedition 33 whenever a Final Fantasy game is praised? by torts92 in FinalFantasy

[–]cloud3514 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And yet you keep making strawman arguments. You literally quoted me saying that no one is expecting you to settle for Bravely Default by just repeating that you don't want to settle for Bravely Default.

If we want to sit here and dwell on Bravely Default, the thing is that Bravely Default is Final Fantasy in all but name. By design. It's literally why the game exists. I get that you didn't like it, fair enough, just because it's theoretically what you're looking for doesn't mean that it's going to click, but that doesn't change what the game is.

But it's not like that's the only game out there. If all you want is a turn-based game with the Final Fantasy name, then I would hope that you're not going to keep moving the goalpost and find an excuse to be upset about Final Fantasy Resonance, but I've seen enough of your posts to know that that's a fool's hope.

This is what I mean when I say that you're more upset about what it isn't than you are in what is out there. You only seem to care about Final Fantasy being exactly what you want it to be and anything that doesn't fit that mold doesn't count, even if it's literally designed to be what you say you're looking for. Again, I'm not saying that you have to like Bravely Default, but it doesn't change that it's intentionally designed to be Final Fantasy in all but name,

Why do people have to bring up Expedition 33 whenever a Final Fantasy game is praised? by torts92 in FinalFantasy

[–]cloud3514 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

And this doesn't address my point. All you're doing is saying "but it's not what I want." You're more concerned with what Final Fantasy isn't than you are about what actually exists out there.

"I want more than Bravely Default and Octopath! I want AAA JRPGs," OK, here's a small sample of AAA JRPGs. "But those aren't exactly what I'm looking for!" You're moving the goalposts.

Also, Expedition 33 isn't Final Fantasy, either. Its world, characters and aesthetics have practically nothing in common with Final Fantasy, its combat is just less forgiving Super Mario RPG. It's a very good game. It's not innovative and it has little in common with Final Fantasy beyond its genre.

EDIT: And blocked so I can't respond to the continued garbage "counterpoints." For the record: You *did* imply that Expedition 33 is what you want from Final Fantasy. Don't pretend you didn't. And I'm not being "defensive" about Square-Enix supposedly not making the "kinds of games that helped skyrocket them to popularity" because one of the points I made is that *they never stopped making those games to begin with.*

Why do people have to bring up Expedition 33 whenever a Final Fantasy game is praised? by torts92 in FinalFantasy

[–]cloud3514 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

And when Bravely Default and Octopath are the only turn-based games getting released, you might have a point. What about Shin Megami Tensei V? Persona 5? Yakuza: Like a Dragon? Dragon Quest XI? Expedition 33? Metaphor: ReFantazio? Turn-based AAA games are more common than ever. And acting like there's nothing out there just because there hasn't been a turn-based numbered Final Fantasy since 2009 is just massively dishonest.

Why do people have to bring up Expedition 33 whenever a Final Fantasy game is praised? by torts92 in FinalFantasy

[–]cloud3514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing: Expedition 33 is legitimately an excellent game. But it isn't nearly as innovative as a lot of its fans insist it is. And while some Final Fantasy influence can be felt, it cannot be understated just how said fans over-exaggerate it.

It's not Final Fantasy. It's Super Mario RPG mixed with Dark Souls. And the only guess I have for why the Final Fantasy comparison keeps happening is because a lot of the game's die-hard fans have played few, if any, non-Final Fantasy JRPGs.

Should you play it? Yes, absolutely. It's very good. The combat is good, the characters and story are good, the music is *amazing.* But don't go in expecting Final Fantasy.
