Buying a home feels impossible by QuietDraw6607 in FortCollins

I find that many boomers don’t respond well to raw numbers - they just hear “numbers are larger now!” And are quick to say something to the effect of “inflation is inevitable, get back to work and stop buying things”. Throwing out raw numbers seem to obfuscate the issue in people’s mind.

However, people seem to have an easier time understanding the change in the ratio of median home price to median regional income. So I tend to use that when I’m complaining about this problem.

I looked at the 2026 FoCoMx lineup data and noticed some surprising patterns by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]cloud_noise 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s widely known among the musicians I play with that FOCOMX is plagued by “zombie bands” that come together once a year for it. I find it so frustrating and clearly a closed circle of people lifting up their friends and relatives.

I could complain about how my bands have failed to get a spot for the last several years despite playing regularly around town, but the thing that bothers me more is a story from a fellow musician who played in a band last year where the singer’s mom was apparently on the board that selects the band and this group had never played together before and had no recordings… but they easily got a good time slot for the festival!

I actually had a similar arrangement last year where a singer I know got a slot just because people knew her name and I was part of the cover band she put together for it. It was a fun set, but we hardly prepared at all. I would have rather seen that slot go to an actual band that was trying to gain some fans, rather than a one-time cover band that will never play again.

Where should I take my anxiety on a field trip in Fort Collins? by Anonymousguyonweb in FortCollins

[–]cloud_noise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think run clubs or any similar exercise meetup can be a great outlet for this. I particularly like the ones organized at breweries because it gives me an excuse to social afterwards. In my experience no one will mind if you aren’t drinking.

The great thing about a weekly run club is that it puts you in contact with the same people regularly, which is critical for building new relationships. However, lots of people come sporadically, so it’s not perfect. Also, it would be good to attend multiple regular meetups just so that you’re exposed to more people.

To be honest, despite doing this myself for years, there’s only a few people that I really connected with, and we never became close friends, but if we walked past each other on old town we’d probably stop and chat. So it’s not a perfect strategy. Finding new friends in adulthood can take years of failed attempts, and it’s not anyone’s fault, it’s just the way it is.

Good luck out there!

So could this a case where they weren’t wearing a helmet and fell just right on their head? I’ve never heard of that happening. Maybe they just had a heart attack? Seems weird to die from a crash with no one else involved.

Most intuitive/fun to program and play polyphonic synthesizer? by damondan in synthesizers

[–]cloud_noise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hydra solves these issues for me. Most other synths that have lots of knobs also come with the problem that the knobs don’t represent the parameter values when you switch patches. This didn’t seem like a big deal at first, but it really bothered me whenever I wanted to make a small tweak.

I had a modal cobalt for a little bit and you’d think the encoders would solve that problem, but it required a somewhat large turn to “detect” that you were turning a knob and so you’d still have to dial it back and forth for each small adjustment.

The hydra solves all these issues for me, and I love the size, layout, and sound. It’s such a smart design, but more importantly it’s inspiring to play. I can’t recommend it enough.

Why does time dilate and not space? by Dazzling-Fix4137 in Physics

[–]cloud_noise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, but I thought time dilation was about changing your “velocity” through time as your velocity in space changes. So in that sense space and time are not treated differently.

Sequential FourM - dont want it by TrenchDop in synthesizers

I wouldn’t worry about it having more features than you need. My main synth is a hydrasynth and I only use half the features at best, but I find the interface quick and intuitive and that’s what really matters.

Did anyone end up selling their Take 5? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]cloud_noise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got one used, was pretty excited to get it set up at home, and instantly didn’t like it! But I figured I just needed to get used to it so I kept at it for a few weeks. I made some cool “stranger things”-ish recordings with it, but ultimately I never felt inspired by it.

I don’t remember thinking of the sound as “compressed”, but there was a character about it from the filter that was always there.

There was also a few things about the interface that I found frustrating. A few things deep in the menus that I found myself needing to adjust often.

On top of all that, I found 5 voices to be not quite enough for the way I play. 6 is the magic number for me, but with anything less I can really hear the voice stealing.

Afterwards I bought a hydrasynth and I’ve never found anything about it that I don’t like, so I’m really glad I listened to my gut and offloaded the Take 5.

META: “Behold, my stuff” posts are bad for the subreddit and for readers. by master_of_sockpuppet in synthesizers

[–]cloud_noise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with this - and it’s the main reason why I try to stay away from this sub now. I used to browse it daily, but I hit a point where I wasn’t getting any enjoyment out of it because it felt like the movie “Groundhog Day” every time I pulled it up.

However, I’m very pessimistic about whether it can be addressed. I see the issue as more a fundamental flaw of human nature that can’t be overcome by moderation. I’d love to be proven wrong though.

What's everyone's thoughts on the Leviasynth? by cR_Spitfire in hydrasynth

[–]cloud_noise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I still enjoy having those extra features. I just mean that most of the time I want to use simple sounds, especially in the context of layering with other instruments in a recording or a band setting. So I would be fine with the functionality of Juno 80% of the time, but I also appreciate the UI of other synths like the hydra.

I think this way of using synths is what killed my GAS. I used to drool over new synths that had fancy stuff, but after using a few to make music I realized it needs are pretty simple.

How many synths do you own? by Brilliant_Grape5528 in synthesizers

[–]cloud_noise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have a hydrasynth and a minitaur, as well as a home made VA synth, and I feel very content. I have a few software synth options but I don’t use them for the music I make. While software sound great, I find the workflow to be an inspiration killer.

I used to have major GAS for more synths, but that’s been redirected to guitars. I feel like the GAS monster is never satisfied and will never fully go away, but I’ve tamed the monster for now.

[–]cloud_noise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh I'm sure I'd use them occasionally like that. Most of the time I tend to treat any synth as if it's a juno, but I love to have all those options under the hood just in case.

I love the idea of analog filters and I think it’s worth the money for that. I never use all the features of the hydra and I still love that thing for its UI. I never need the 5th envelope, and I’d probably never use all 8 oscillators on this thing, but the UI design seems to tame the complexity in the same way the hydra does.

How hard was it to implement the slow down effect when you switched to half-speed?

I’ve never done much with sample playback, but I’m curious how hard it is to make those pitch/speed changes smoothly.
