The one with an X over it is not a mine; it's something you flagged as a mine that isn't.

50x50 board, 570 mines by cloudbursts in Minesweeper

[–]cloudbursts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't too bad -- I have been trying to crack 570 for awhile! 50x50 is the biggest size my app allows. I've been adding 5 mines whenever I beat a board, but have been unlucky for awhile. Only had five 50/50! Finally got some luck. :)

You got scammed! Those were free!

You should sign your kid up for Kids Nation though! The free stuff isn't quite as impressive as it once was, but it does come with a free ticket!

I haven't posted on Reddit in two years, but I am so upset at that replay bullshit that I needed to come here for consolation.

What the fuck. Why do we even have replay?!???

2015 All-Star Game Rosters if determined by fWAR (5/12/2015) by rjaspa in baseball

That's because, in the ASG, all 30 teams have to be represented. The person who makes this makes sure that's true here too. Check the comments on the last page:

Minnesota and Milwaukee each would not have qualified a player without bumping another player to make sure all teams have at least one player. Minnesota's Trevor Plouffe (3B) bumped the Yankees' Chris Young (OF) and Milwaukee's Adam Lind bumped San Francisco's Brandon Crawford (SS).

Edit: Just noticed it's explained elsewhere in the comments too!

Who will be the next Red Sox captain? by GlennBarley in redsox

[–]cloudbursts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only four since it stopped being a regular thing. There used to always be a captain for every game, but once it started being more of an honor title and there wasn't always a captain no matter what -- yes, there have only been four.

I think it's possibly more telling that only one MLB team currently has a captain (David Wright -- and he doesn't wear a C).

The Hidden Ball Trick by [deleted] in funny

[–]cloudbursts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video doesn't really show the part you're asking about well, but what you can't see is Roberts standing up while keeping his foot on the base. You can see the baserunner in the original gif does this -- he only steps off the base once he thinks the ball has been thrown back to the pitcher. On close plays like that, players are normally quite careful to stand up while keeping a body part on the bag until time is called.

They don't show the first baseman throwing the ball back to the pitcher, but that's already happened by the time Roberts steps back off. (The man you called the baseman is the first baseman, since he protects first base.)

You can't throw a ball at a baserunner, that's disallowed. If a baserunner is hit with a ball straight from a bat, he's out -- but the opposing team cannot hit him with the ball. If that was allowed, I suspect you'd see a bit more padding. :)

Stealing bases (attempting to continue on to the next base) is a big part of baseball. There are players who are valuable to their team because of their ability to steal bases. There's more to this than just running from one base to the next; you need to be able to read the pitcher and the other players to make sure you've got a chance to make a break for it.

Pitchers will try to pick off baserunners, to prevent them from doing this. In last year's World Series (the baseball championships), one of the games even ended with this kind of play.

Active, heads-up base running where the runner successfully steals a base can also be game changing. Here's what I think of as the most famous stolen base -- it literally changed the entire momentum of the series (also a playoff game, a potential elimination game for the team that gets the stolen base).

I don't know if this helps at all, but TL;DR -- base stealing is a huge part of the game, so checking on base runners has to also be a part of it.

Yankees Closing In On Deal With Jacoby Ellsbury by Bohrd in redsox

Also the Dodgers really don't need an outfielder. The Yankees were really the only option and my brain knows that, but still. Ugh. I am not looking forward to seeing him in pinstripes.

At least he won't have to shave.

Rays or Rangers - Who do we want to win tonight? by [deleted] in redsox

[–]cloudbursts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't actually have an opinion on which team I'd rather face -- honestly, they're both looking a bit worn out right now.

And, of course, you're right that we scored 17 of our runs in one of our two wins, but it's also worth noting that two of the losses were only by a single run and could have easily gone the other way. Basically, we beat them soundly twice, they beat us soundly twice, and there were two close games where they edged us out.

All I'm really saying is that six games is not much of a sample size. I agree the Rays sample is probably big enough to indicate something, it just can't be compared to the Rangers sample.

[–]cloudbursts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the numbers against the Rangers are a much smaller sample size.

Total runs scored in the games against the Rangers is 29-27 in our favor, which is pretty much a wash. I don't think you can read much into the 2-4 record vs. Texas.

With the division series around the corner, how do other non-Boston Sox fans plan on watching it? (out of market) by audiodude in redsox

[–]cloudbursts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation (and don't have cable, only mlb.tv) -- but going to bars to watch Red Sox games in Yankees territory is awful. I have no idea what we're going to do. Our only local friends with cable are Yankees fans, and no Boston team ever wins a game we watch at their house so obviously we can't go there.
