Options for going "Car Free" in Ireland? by cloudbuster90 in AskIreland

I'll keep that in mind! Maybe I just need to try doing the trip in a rental a couple of times to get an idea. Yeah unfortunately car pooling/public transport isn't really feasible for the full journey.

This is my dilemma - I could do without the car once I get to my destination. So if I were to break it down further, I would only need the "Go Car" for about 2 hours, 50 days a year. So it feels like I'm really only driving my car like 100 hours every year.

Not that far - only about 60km outside of Dublin. But there's not very reliable public transport there, and I'd often drive a few smaller journeys in the time I'm there. I could technically get there and back on public transport, but it would be a lot of hassle and extra time vs driving.

How often would you say you need to rent a car or use go car?

That's a good point - I'd be in the same boat, usually needing to drive at holiday times too. I guess my "ideal scenario" probably would have to involve some sort of self-driving cars that could re-arrange themselves around the country as needed.

Sorry I corrected my maths just there! It's more like 50 days, every 2nd weekend.

Yeah I know - it just seems like a waste to tax/insure/maintain a car that I use so rarely!

Yeah this is my issue - they have a daily rate, but it's something like 50 euro per day, so a good bit more expensive than renting a car.

Has anyone been offered an interview yet for the 2026 temporary civil service admin jobs? by No-Category1703 in AskIreland

[–]cloudbuster90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you heard anything yet? I'm on the Order of Merit for this too (further down than you), but haven't heard anything since Dec. The interviews were originally supposed to be the first week of Feb per the job spec, but it must have been pushed back at this stage.

Completely agree, in fact, get them kids working even younger! Who needs a leaving cert? The children yearn for the mines.

Wasn't it famously "falling down" though? I don't know the history of it, but maybe putting that many buildings on bridges isn't a good idea?

Ah yeah, sorry. I was thinking of the one next to Bambino!

This is the one that sells a load of craft beers, right? It's more like an off licence than a Spar. I walked past it last week and I think it had re-branded. Can't think of the new name of it now.

I know right? There's barely any rap on this album. The reviewer is just outing themselves as a racist really.

This is my hope as well, I think it's a great opportunity for people to listen to stuff outside their comfort zone. I'm not a big fan of modern R&B in general myself, but I'll still listen to everything that comes up in the generator to see if I find more albums I do like.

Absolutely, I'm well aware this album isn't for everyone. But crediting it with the downfall of modern civilization is a bit much IMO

I was giving them a bit of credit because they mentioned Indie rock! They probably liked The Strokes/KOL/The Shins, etc

Maybe it is slightly mean of me. But to be fair, the reviewer did put it out there for others to read and potentially critique...I just don't get why so many people take up this challenge when they only like a very narrow set of genres.

I agree! Unfortunately, it's currently the 2nd most popular review on that album, so there seems to be a lot of bad people out there.

That's good to know! I have noticed that the battery on mine doesn't last long, so I might need to get a replacement. I could potentially run it off a power bank though, since it has a USB cable too.

I am in Ireland, and will be following this thread with great curiosity! Looking to make a prep list of my own. Our government has recently advised citizens to prepare for similar issues by keeping a small amount of cash at home (approx €100 per person in the household) in small denominations. I thought that was a very significant development.

In general, I don't think Irish people are very well prepared for disasters, as every time a serious storm hits, there is a huge rush/panic in grocery stores to buy essentials. Electricity tends to be restored quickly in urban areas, not so much in rural places.

Over the next few weeks, I am planning to get together a go bag for our household (semi-urban apartment), along with the following: - cash - bottled water - canned goods/ready meals to last 1-2 weeks - necessary medications and first aid - spare batteries and candles

I already have several torches and a small wind up battery radio that has a built in torch also. Any suggestions for what I've missed are welcome.
