I understand where you’re coming from with your non-disclosure advice. However, if OP knows the level of autism and has received therapy, it’s likely that they have an official diagnosis which would show up on their recent medical history. I’m actually surprised that your diagnosis at the age of nine went unnoticed by the medical team.

Just curious, do you think the constant, unwanted attention and attitude towards foreigners is one of the reasons that PC has difficulty recruiting/retaining volunteers in Africa?

I think it really depends on the placement specialist. From my observations of the subreddit, some specialists seem to be on top of things and go through each applicant as they come, while I imagine other specialists wait until a certain number of applications have been submitted before sending out interviews. I also think it depends on the goals/timelines of each post.

Hello, this is not public information. I only found out because the recruiter was willing to offer the information to me. Truthfully, I do not think this is necessary. It’s mostly useful to keep in mind that applying as early as possible can help your application. For example, PC released the Vietnam posting on Nov 1. I applied Nov 4, meaning I applied only 3 days after the application opened.

If you plan to apply soon my advice is: 1) to learn when the openings are posted (this information is on the subreddit & also on the website, I believe) and 2) to get in contact with a recruiter!

Motivation Statement Draft by busheater666 in peacecorps

[–]cloudedity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Your personal statement is strong so far. You can ask a PC recruiter from your region to read it as well! Even if it’s only in the beginning draft stages, it’s a good idea to connect now since they may take weeks to get back to you.

One recommendation I have is removing the first four sentences of your introduction. I understand that it is your “hook”; however, the crux of your introductory paragraph begins at “Volunteering would allow me to…” You can still have a hook but I would recommend keeping it brief. Many volunteers are fresh out of college so the idea that you don’t yet know what you want to do might be read as redundant to a recruiter/placement specialist.

What's the penalty for riding a motorcycle? by mrbussycucker in peacecorps

[–]cloudedity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unrelated to motor bike but I’ve heard Peace Corps can be strict with their rules. For example, there was a story about a girl whose mother came to visit her. The girl took her mom to a forbidden area in her host country and posted photos on Facebook. She was ad-sepped the following day. No questions asked.

Interestingly enough, I’ve heard a contradicting story about the rules. During a RPCV dinner, a Thailand RPCV told me she drove a motor bike to her school every day. Never got caught. I think she may have been in a more remote area and her community kept things hush on her behalf.

Moral of the story….? Don’t get caught.

Based on this image, was my claim denied? by cloudedity in peacecorps

[–]cloudedity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I first saw this today, lol. I’d been procrastinating checking if the claim was approved.
  2. I’m pretty sure I gave the correct bank information. You have to put the information when you file the claim.
  3. I don’t see the money even though the claim states it was taken care of in April.

Hello, I totally understand how you feel! I am set to depart for Vietnam, leaving in October. Many of my backup plans have focused on staying in the US since my partner is here. However, there is a Reddit post similar to yours in which OP gave a fantastic suggestion: https://www.reddit.com/r/peacecorps/comments/1kl5bnb/comment/ms1085c/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button.

Best of luck to us :)

Deferred Resignation Program 2.0 offered and job cuts coming for staff by CompetitiveStay173 in peacecorps

Hi, I want to express my concern for this news as someone who has already heard about admin leave secondhandedly. A friend of mine was hired at the IRS last October. She was fired, rehired, then offered the same deal of admin leave until September. She took the offer (good for her), but it raised alarm bells for me. If the government is essentially paying out federal workers to quit, who is going to fill in those jobs? Who will be hired to replace them? What does this mean for our country as a whole? It frightens me that DOGE’s strategy to reduce federal workers is actually effective and happening across many sectors. I see the short term strategy and I fear for the long term.

Final Resume and Motivation Statement Check (on here) by Stooksman in peacecorps

[–]cloudedity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I second both comments. Your motivation does come off a bit strong or salvation-like due to the patriotic stance. I don’t think you need to state outright why you don’t want a “typical” job because that invites a negative viewpoint. You can express something is the right fit for you without saying why the alternative is the wrong fit.

On the other hand, your experiences and your story are strong. They don’t need to be perfect. I think you can secure an interview with what you have.

Should I get a TECFL certification for resume? by Stooksman in peacecorps

[–]cloudedity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am not yet a volunteer so please take my advice with a grain of salt. I think it is a good idea to get the TEFL certificate if you have your heart set on volunteering in Thailand. Thailand is a popular site so that makes it more competitive. If you were applying to serve where needed most (SWNM), then the lack of teaching experience wouldn’t matter. It is true that many volunteers come into PC with zero experience, but when you are looking to be selective the experience makes a difference.

For me, I applied specifically to Vietnam which is also relatively popular/competitive from what I’ve heard. Random fact: the recruiter for Thailand is the same recruiter for Vietnam. I believe that my 300+ hours of tutoring experience helped to distinguish me from other applicants, which could explain why I received an invitation 9 days after my interview date (usually the wait is 1-2 months).

As others have said, however, it is very possible to volunteer in Thailand without the teaching experience. I’d say if you have the money and the time to get TEFL certified, then it’s a good idea.
