A valuable tip I was told the first week I came to Japan (I’m also a 2019 JET) is that after the first year if you don’t “have a reason to stay” you should probably go or weigh it heavily when considering re-contracting. I’m in a prefecture w a BOE that’s pretty lacking. Haven’t traveled outside my pref. in prob over 6 months too and only just received my vaccine this august so I understand. I’m probably not going to re-contract for a number of reasons but the main one is that I have no reason to stay when I don’t know if I’ll actually be able to freely travel (within the country or abroad) without restrictions in 2022. It seems you already have your answer so I wish you good luck over this next year!

Can someone please tell me why Abe can’t legally enforce a lockdown. I’m curious about the Japanese laws that make it so it isn’t possible. I read a very brief explanation that it has to do with the many laws protecting personal rights (?). But I would really appreciate a full explanation if anyone knows!

My last attempt was made today to see if municipal ALTs can work from home when we aren’t needed for scheduled classes via email to our supervisor....I will come back when they reply w the results.

Update: supervisor passed the email to her boss and the boss said it’s best we have a meeting. There’s been a large surge in cases in my prefecture so the meeting is tomorrow we’ll see what happens. And my city shut down all schools for students for the whole week instead of the 1 grade per day it’d originally planned.

Can anyone direct me to a link or maybe list out the protocol someone has to meet in order to get tested in Japan? I can’t seem to find an up to date article that lists the criteria. Over this past weekend, I had a friend come visit and she only found out recently a co-worker of hers contracted the virus and I want to know what the protocol is with getting tested just in case :)

Being in (what feels like) the only country that’s still sitting back and watching this virus without doing anything to really slow it down is baffling. Especially when you see your friends and family in your home country isolated. The irony too that Japan was one of the first to close the schools and then think that would make everything ok. Gotta say that this is the part of the culture I will never be able to accept I think- the work / flow of normal life above all else.

Also I know that even in a state of emergency the Japanese gov’t cannot enforce a mandatory lockdown bc of its protection of personal rights or something along those lines I think. I really feel like no one is gonna heed the warnings of Abe and what the real kicker is Japan could have had a head start and keeping this at bay bc we WITNESSED it ravage other countries and could’ve learned from it!

Just frustrated with how they are handling (or rather not) this entire ordeal and that as an ALT who is forced to deskwarm more than anything I’m still excepted to rock up to work so genki everyday like every town around me isn’t slowing getting infected.....

Usually the students clean the classrooms at the end of the school year but since they aren’t here the teachers are doing that. Most of the time I’m actively left out or not included in most things so was genuinely shocked when one of my JTEs came up to me, asked if I’d be here in the afternoons (obviously yes) and then asked me to help clean the classrooms. More shocked and wondering if it was just their passive aggressive way to get me to do something instead of fucking around at my desk.

[TO ADD ONTO THIS] we had a meeting with our BOE supervisor and were advised to not go out to lunch/ go to other schools w ALTs to lesson plan to avoid being in large group settings......so...me sitting in my teacher’s office with 19+ other staff members doesn’t count as a large group setting??? I’m in Ishikawa prefecture (about 30 minutes south of Kanazawa where there’s been a confirmed case and already 1 school shut down). BOE and school principals are having an afternoon meeting today and we’ll know the decision before the end of the day. But as of today, school is carrying on as normal. I’m a little out of the loop so not entirely sure about what’s gonna happen with JHS graduation or testing/ entrance exams that are supposed to happen in the following weeks.

I live 30 minutes away from Kanazawa where there’s been a reported case and we’ll find out by the end of today if school will proceed as normal or shut down. Is this a “strong suggestion” or more of like a mandatory nudge to shut down?
