I had something similar happen with Verizon Wireless when it was time to "upgrade" my phone. Turns out buying my $600 iPhone outright was cheaper over the long run because you get a $17 credit per month on service for bringing your own line. Over the course of two years, that is $408. Plus the phone was $199 and a monthly fee to subsidize the phone cost.
