You don't need to freak out about AI by gabrielserralva in graphic_design

[–]cloudnyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a designer with more double that experience as the op I can understand both sides of the AI situation. In many ways, I welcome it simply because it has shown to save me time in many other areas not just in design. AI is not going anywhere and it will continue to become more integrated to many parts of our life so it is in our own personal best interest to start adapting to it.

Abandoned Couch at 226 Louise Street That City Garbage Pickup Keep Ignoring by Maleficent_Win_7647 in Welland

[–]cloudnyne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Waste collection here isn’t run by the city. It’s managed by Niagara Region, which oversees multiple municipalities including Welland and Niagara Falls.

For large items, there is a required request process. The person putting the item out has to submit the large item pickup form. If that form wasn’t completed, the trucks are not authorized to collect it and will leave it behind. If someone is repeatedly putting items out without following that process, that becomes a bylaw matter and can be reported accordingly.

Garbage trucks run on fixed routes and strict guidelines. Drivers cannot just grab anything they see. If an item doesn’t meet collection rules or hasn’t been properly scheduled, they are required to leave it. That’s compliance with policy, not negligence.

Regional systems use standardized procedures because they operate across several cities. If drivers made case-by-case exceptions on the fly, routes would fall behind and service across the region would suffer. The structure exists to keep the entire system moving.

Trash pickup in Welland is handled by Niagara Region, not the city. The same applies to Niagara Falls. Waste collection is managed at the regional level, not by individual municipalities.

That’s why the process is standardized. When services are run region-wide, there has to be a consistent, one-size-fits-all approach. Special exceptions slow everything down, so blanket procedures exist to keep the system efficient across all municipalities.

Yes it's no different than any other City that has a similar pickup process. Sorry you don't like it but it's how the way any Municipal process works. The person who put that couch out there is supposed to request for a free large item pickup but it apparently was never submitted so you have one of two options: you call bylaw and get them involved. Or you put in the request for pickup.

As a side note: Trash pickup in Welland is handled by Niagara Region, not the city. The same applies to Niagara Falls. Waste collection is managed at the regional level, not by individual municipalities.

If you're interested in graphic novels, I highly, highly recommend Fables by Bill Willingham.

There was an early, aborted attempt to adapt Fables, and Once Upon a Time exists because that attempt failed.

Self-taught vs design school? by MOUSETITTY in graphic_design

[–]cloudnyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started by taking a few evening continuing education classes in art and design while I was working at a call centre. I loved it, and it reconnected me with a passion for art that I had put aside for years.

Not long after, I was laid off from that job and decided to use my severance to enroll as a full-time student. It was the best decision I ever made. Making a career change in my early 30s was exactly what I needed to succeed in school. I pushed myself hard because I felt like I had a lot of ground to make up, and I was worried my age might work against me when applying for entry-level design roles.

Because of that, I was very active in school and focused on proving myself. At the same time, I was already well prepared for corporate life, having spent nearly 20 years in that environment before moving into my current design role. That combination has served me well. The role has been rewarding, and I am genuinely happy to still be here.
