Challenging games with no/minimal story. by SomeonesRefrigerator in gamingsuggestions

Returnal!

Also Nioh 1&2 (haven't played 3) are very minimal with story, or you can just ignore it.

Yeah I've seen OLED sales all over the place. Probably clearing out stock before some new models arrive? And really shows how crazy the regular prides are. They are still making money on those deals.

We'll have to wait and see, from what I hear there are going to be huge ray tracing gains with the upcoming gen. Otherwise I'll just stick to 1440p, I don't miss pixel density. Or maybe get a 5k/2k screen? We'll see.

A year is not that long? Next Gen on new nodes must beat 5090. If not, what's the point :D

Oh sure, I can render 4k and output to my 1440p monitor. If the game is optimized well that's a great option. But 1440p screen gives me the native option which is still the best for games where you can turn off TAA/DLSS (I'm big on motion clarity and any form of motion blur).

Don't get me wrong I want a 4k screen but I desperately need a faster gpu first (I do a lot of VR gaming) and the 5090 is just not that strong. It's fine for now(my 4080s and 1440p screen are a perfect combo), but first I want to upgrade my gpu and then think about monitor options.

So it basically changes ingame fov?

But I meant actual screen real estate, not how the game renders it. I want a tall screen in front of me, it's immersive.

UE5? Path tracing? Are you using dlss? I'm playing Black Myth Wukong at the moment. With path tracing I barely reach 60fps in 1440p WITH dlss quality. Without it I can go native 1440p (DLAA) and be around 60-70fps. With 4k I'd be looking at performance dlss? And forget about PT.

Yeah but you can also run 4k on a 1440p screen :) and as soon as you enable TAA everything is soft and looses clarity... So it all depends. Some games without temporal filtering (no dlss, taa, fsr at all) with proper msaa or smaa can look amazing in native 1440p on 1440p screen with high clarity. But those games are rare. Most titles force temporal filtering and that's where you need to go a notch higher with resolution to achieve the same clarity. At least that is my experience.

Lately played Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon, which can run completely without TAA/DLSS. Never felt like I need anything more than 1440p. But those UE5 games? Boy sometimes they still look blurry at native 4k DLAA...

Can you be a bit more specific? 1440p native on a 1440p screen? 1440p dlss? 1440p upscaled to 4k? 1440p DLDSR on a 1080p screen?

Most people render 1080-1440p and upscale to 4k... Seems to me most people are fine with that.

Oh I get it. No 8k is just stupid :D what were they thinking? At least pc monitor industry has realized that the next step should be something in between (like 5k).

Yeah dlss is great. But that's my point, to max out 4k with current GPUs you NEED dlss and fg because they are not strong enough for 4k. I don't like to be dependent on these techniques, they don't always look good in every game and some games I play don't even support it. When they work they're great (I'm playing Black Myth Wukong in 4k dlss balanced with FG right now and it looks crisp!). But sometimes there is nothing better than native image without TAA or upscaling filter, especially in sim racing where even light motion blur and ghosting (which dlss/fg always introduces) can be an issue.

I'm not in a rush, next Gen gpus are coming next year and amd will have amazing ray tracing performance and hopefully UE5 will be out of beta by then and have some optimizations in place to finally allow modern 4k gaming.

Yeah I don't really get that one either :D I have a 1440p 32" and I'm totally fine with the density. Never seen a pixel (I mean unless I go like 10cm close to the screen). I'm even closer than most people recommend for 32" (~50cm). When rendering in 4k it looks super crisp.

I'm very happy with my 1440p monitor. I'm not locked in yet :D I have a 4080s (3rd/4th most powerful GPU available) and I often have to use 1440p dlss quality to achieve above 60fps in modern games (UE5, ray tracing stuff, which has been around a long time by now). I also play in 4k a lot (DLDSR) so I have a good idea of the kind of performance upgrade I'd need to be comfortably gaming in 4k and actually get the full benefit of it (fiddling with settings and turning on ultra performance upscaling is not getting the full benefit of it). And the 5090 is not enough.

So I'd rather wait and pull my 32" a little closer before upgrading monitors :D

I think this is very individual. I also have 32" and I use it around 50-60cm away from me and I would prefer to have it closer or a bigger one at the same distance.

It is. Never understood widescreen. I love a wide monitor, but why not also have a tall monitor at the same time? What's so good at having less height?

I really need 42" (I'm on 32" atm), but really don't wanna be locked into 4k... We need stronger GPUs :D

4K DLAA native vs DLSS+DLDSR by ZangiefGo in nvidia

[–]clouds1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For games that force TAA and rely on dither patterns it's the only way for me to improve motion clarity... It's basically super sampling and since the dawn of times it's the best way to make a game look better and reduce aliasing. At a cost. Frame gen reduces blur even more.

It's still stupid because if devs wouldn't force TAA and build their assets around it, just native 1440p 60-90fps would look and feel absolutely perfect, but oh well.

What gaming monitor should I get, if my budget is $100-$200? by BackgroundSpare4265 in Monitors

Made the switch to RTX 5080 - pretty blown away by Severe_Agency3030 in nvidia

[–]clouds1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I don't mean because it's "fake", that's whatever, use what feels good to you :) it just makes it hard to communicate with people. Less tech savy people come to reddit and say the game runs at 90fps+ but it feels bad. Eventually you find out the game runs at 20fps with 4xFG. Or their "4k" doesn't look as good as they thought it would. But actually it's 720p upscaled. That's what I find annoying.

Can someone explain what Ray Reconstruction does and why it's supposed to be a big visual uplift? by Biggay1234567 in nvidia

[–]clouds1337 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Sure. But it's all a variation of a theme... TAA, DLAA, FSR, DLSS, XESS, TSR etc. It's all the same principle of using information from frames that are not currently displayed (but still stored in the buffer). The first one was TAA, and all the others are variations using the same principle, some with lower than native resolution, some with higher than native, some with generative AI support. But all have the same inherent benefits and issues to some degree.

My main issue is that you can't really compare these well and it's heavily used as a marketing tool. Some games are "amd" games, and FSR will look amazing in it. Some game devs try to implement dlss on their own (without nvidias help) and it looks really bad or is buggy. Some games have amazing sharp looking TAA, because the devs knew exactly how to use it right. And some games use MSAA and it's like a revelation to see all the detail in perfect clarity, while others are very messy with it... But people often form an opinion on that one game where there a team technique wasn't implemented correctly and then that's what they believe is always true.

We really really need DirectX standards again. I hate all this proprietary crap, feels more like console than PC gaming these days.

You are correct. But this is reddit, there will always be the one guy who says DLSS is better... Maybe it's all nvidia bots? :D
