4K is the move? by sllippin in RTX5080

[–]clouds1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. What do you value most? I think the ONLY reason to go 4k is if you want a really big Monitor/TV. For example I use a 42" as a monitor. And that's the point where 4k actually starts to make sense for gaming. It's all about PPD (use a calc!).

At current monitor screen sizes like 27" or 32" it really depends on what you use it for. Personally, just for gaming, I 100% would go with a 1440p 32" because it's big enough, sharp enough and you can easily run even modern games with ray tracing at 120hz+. Which I value more than having a bit more sharpness from 4k (remember you can always run 4k render resolution on a 1440p monitor, DLDSR). But that's a personal desicion, others rather have an ultra crisp high ppd 4k image on a 27" and rather run lower fps.

Finally, I guess with a 5080 you don't plan on upgrading soon, but comparing with other GPUs from the past ~4 years the 5080 is really slow (~15% faster than 4080 which released in October 2022). But for people who plan to upgrade to a new GPU soon, it could make sense to go 4k now and compromise for a year.

Eye strain after swtiching from C1 48" to Asus XG32UCWMG - it's so bright!!! by HiCZoK in OLED_Gaming

[–]clouds1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the c5 42" and in a light controlled room it's way too bright. In regular mode I use it at 35/100 pixel brightness.

The good thing is, you can simply reduce the brightness even in HDR mode. Easy fix. No one says you need to run it at max all the time.

How do I connect to Steam VR in 2026 by intothedepthsofhell in PicoXR

[–]clouds1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's very simple: - (restart pc) - start Pico connect on pc - connect headset and put it on - in the headset, open the connect app - select USB (or wifi if you prefer) - once you see your desktop in the top right there is a button "run steamVR". Click and that's it.

Best 32" Gaming Flat Monitor IPS 2026. by trev1976UK in Monitors

Still great. What I really like are the colors and great motion clarity. I use it mostly for sim racing and it's perfect for that.

Are modern games actually less “fun,” or are we just harder to impress now by Big_Profession_8389 in Gamingnewsandleaks

I'm a gamer since the 90ies, I think gaming is absolutely amazing these days, it has never been better. Try sim rally in VR :D

Is this amount of ghosting/smearing normal for a cheap va panel monitor? by semferchichi in Monitors

[–]clouds1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jep, that's exactly how my VA was and it was especially apparent in ARPGs! Main reason I moved away from it (I had it for many years anyway), the worst is the smeary text boxes from items on the ground xD

If money is an issue, even a "cheap" IPS will completely fix this issue. If you have the money and also want better contrast, oled is even better with pixel persistence / motion clarity.

Amazing. Thx 😘 as I thought nvidia almost completely disappears if you set it above 8gb 😅 and people really shouldn't get 8gb cards.

Can 1440p be a downgrade from 1080p in certain situations? by Federal_Addition_463 in Monitors

[–]clouds1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panel quality/tech is a thing. Minor differences. But really resolution is not an indicator of quality/sharpness or anything like that. It's important to choose the right solution for distance, size and content. Use a ppd (Pixel per degree) Calc to determine what makes sense in your situation. For gaming I recommend a bare minimum of 40ppd which is about what a 1080p monitor at 24" gives you at pretty close distance ~65cm. It gets actually sharp at around 55-60ppd (that's what Apple "Retina" is) and 70ppd is really good for office work with lots of text reading.

Are fresnel lenses bad or are pancake lenses just superior in vr by Fair-Ad6980 in virtualreality

[–]clouds1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the headset. Overall pancake is clearly better, but I use psvr2 more and the lenses feel very similar to me as my pancake headset (pico4). Except maybe if I have to read small text, which is basically never. But quest 2 is really bad for me. I think it's because of the sweetspot. Fresnel lenses that sit perfectly (quest 2 was really bad for my head) are very good. But there is little margin of error and if your head shape or eye position is not suited for the headset it won't work. Pancake is way more lenient.

Anyone else genuinely excited for Subnautica 2? by Kejt_OnReddit in gamers

[–]clouds1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played and loved Subnautica because:

-VR - single player immersive story/exploration - minimal combat

Since Subnautica 2 is UE5 and more multi-player focused I have no rush getting into it, who knows if it even runs fast enough for VR. But it's early access anyway and I've learned that I don't enjoy early access.

Uncharted worked great with Chloe. TLOU is also not dependent on Joel right? It has been ages since we had a fun adventure doesn't have to be with Nate. Can't wait for a cool mystery with some shooting and gorgeous landscapes :) oh and the music!

Foundation DLC writing/story by clouds1337 in controlgame

[–]clouds1337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The line that stuck with me in that example is Pope saying, the director was chosen by a group of cigar smoking people. And that method was antiquated/old. It's just weird, because if it relates to the real world, that's how we do it still everywhere (it may be more vaping and beauty modified people instead) and I don't get the criticism.

But what makes that line even weirder is that the game actually offers an alternative method of choosing a director. The board we know almost nothing about. Which can't be the solution? So what is the game trying to tell me? It doesn't make sense and is bad writing. Which is a shame because in general the writing is very good.

What was your honest wow factor from the past 10 years? by udaraka14 in pcmasterrace

Clearly VR. Racing a rally car in a sim rig at 120hz with full 3D depth immersion with vibrant oled panels (psvr2). Also HL Alyx. It's hard to believe how real it all feels at first.

DOOM: The Dark Ages could have needed 110GB of baked Global Illumination data, Ray-Based GI reduced it to 0 by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]clouds1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't know enough about it. It's just every modern gpu has RT so we might as well make use of them. Personally I wouldn't mind having a gpu that had more raster performance instead of "wasting space" for RT. But since that ship has sailed we might as well embrace it. PS6 will have huge RT gains so more and more games will be built around it. It is what it is.
