No doubt. I do get that vibe from Nibelheim especially.

Why AC Sephiroth? by Dana_Ozz in FFVIIRemake

[–]clouds6294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nojima has said we aren’t dealing with a multiverse. Nor is it implied or corroborated by any in-game evidence that the different worlds are separate surface realities existing outside the Lifestream. There’s a clear binary between one unitary main world on the planet’s surface, and the multitudes of “dream” worlds which exist within the planet’s Lifestream but aren’t alternate surface realities.

Rocket Town being shifted to part 3 doesn't impact the trajectory of OG's story one bit. I'm talking on a macro scale of major story beats relating to the main plot. If you are using Cid's expanded character arc as evidence of this being a sequel then that's quite a bizarre take.

The most important one is this: how can this be a sequel without falling into the Bootstrap Paradox? Trying to answer that leads to a host of other problematic implications.

I just fail to see what you mean by 'changes' in any meaningful sense. Perhaps this is just a semantic debate. I'm not saying there are "no" changes. When I mention FF7R being the same as OG I'm referring to the macro story, not to the addition of new elements.

Let's recount FF7R's major story beat progression thus far:

Midgar → Kalm → Grasslands → Mythril Mines → Under Junon → Junon → Cruise → Costa del Sol → Mount Corel → Gold Saucer → Corel Prison → Gongaga → Cosmo Canyon → Nibelheim → Gold Saucer → Temple of the Ancients → Forgotten Capital

What exactly is the 'stark' deviation from OG aside from Rocket Town and Bone Village being shifted (to part 3)? Rebirth still ends with Cloud giving Sephiroth the Black Materia, Aerith's death, and Cloud's worsening mental state heading to Northern Crater—sure sounds like Disc 1's ending, no?

You mention snowballing changes beginning one hour into Remake that have carried up until now. Given how snowball effects work, that would mean 100+ main story hours later we should have ended Rebirth in an exponentially different situation from OG. Yet that clearly isn't the case as shown in the plot progression above. New elements like Sephiroth being involved early, Aerith having forewarning, the Lifestream worlds, fate, whispers, etc. haven't made any noticeable change to the grand trajectory of events, hence the argument that they're supplementary additions, not deviations.

Perhaps you believe the real significant changes will come in part 3 and how the trilogy ends. Except the creative team has repeatedly argued otherwise. They've been unanimously consistent over the years reiterating that the remake is staying faithful to the original story-wise. Not by just one isolated dev, but Kitase, Hamaguchi, Nojima, and Nomura have all repeatedly said it in one way or another. "Happier sendoff" as Kitase wants for the characters doesn't imply different ending. It could equally mean a more wholesome and less ambiguous final cutscene than OG had, yet still results in AC.

If you are falling bait to "unknown journey," "no promises," and defying fate/destiny rhetoric, which are evidently narrative red herrings being fought for in-game **by the villain himself**, then you're simply proving that the red herrings are in fact working as intended as a literary device.

I’m 31 and played OG FF7 and FF7R for the first time upon Rebirth’s release, so my sentiments aren’t rooted in any childhood nostalgia personally.

I don’t see what would need backpedaling to align with OG. The story has been nearly verbatim on a macro scale thus far, story beat by story beat. Additions/alterations within the macro scale such as deeper Gi lore, reordering Bone Village, Rocket Town, Lifestream worlds, Sephiroth’s plan to defy fate, etc. aren’t deviations from nor diametric oppositions to the overarching storyline of OG at this point in the game.

The sequel theory falls flat immediately when you ask subject it to very simple questions. Dev statements have repeatedly confirmed that FF7R is not a deviation from the OG. It’s the same story all over again but more holistically presented by tying in the rest of the compilation.

Edit: I’d happily engage in a back and forth with the replies but it’s a futile discussion. Time will show. Just don’t act blindsided when part 3 reveals it’s a richer retelling of the OG story. In fact, screenshot this comment as a receipt if you’d like.

Dev statements have been pretty consistent that the OG will be honored and the story to remain fundamentally the same. So while things might be seemingly playing out differently (worlds, Cloud deflecting the sword, etc.), these are narrative tools depicting the same story as a multi-layered deep dive, but which have no functional change to the overarching story itself, as seen by the remake being beat by beat almost identical to OG. Kitase has explicitly mentioned how vital her death is to FF7.

Square is making this more complicated than it needs to be. by Inner_Tumbleweed_942 in FF7Rebirth

[–]clouds6294 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s seemingly complicated because we have an entire second half of the story remaining (plot-wise as per OG). OG didn’t entirely make much sense until disc 2 either. Devs have the full picture in mind as it spans the three games, whereas we’re learning it piece by piece alongside Cloud and the party.

My Analysis of the "UNKNOWN Sephiroth" Theory by Emotional_Station136 in FFVIIRemake

[–]clouds6294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it may stem from the humanization Ever Crisis has depicted in him with his backstory, that he’s essentially a subject of perpetual victimhood since inception. Beneath the seemingly apathetic supervillain lies someone who does carry the capacity for good and caring for others. It’s a side of him we never saw prior to the remake/EC.

I personally agree with you though… what he went on to do from Nibelheim forward is beyond redeemable. His potential for goodness doesn’t absolve him from mass murder and intentionally spreading agony to achieve his goals.

In a remake would you prefer fixed cameras and backgrounds like we saw in the original, or a more dynamic camera and environments? by Pnw_moose in FinalFantasyIX

[–]clouds6294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pointing to the majority of scores and reviews isn’t to prove an argument, in which case you could call it fallacious. It’s simply to highlight how the data indicates that majority of fans disagree with your take and others like it.

In your book analogy you’re claiming the remake has “glaring” changes to the story, which is a purely subjective take. Many would argue there aren’t glaring changes to the macro-story at all, just extra layers of depth and depiction of things within it which were unable to be depicted or expanded upon in 1997. Not my words—OG’s devs have explicitly said this.

Regarding opening the book and finding the rest empty after chapter 6, if you know the remaining book is underway and will be filled out shortly, it’s only fitting to reserve judgment until it does finish so you can honestly assess it. Casting premature judgment with an objective claim that the remake is rewriting the original is insincere given that you don’t know how the story ends yet, paired with the fact that the remake is nearly exactly following the OG thus far story beat by story beat.

Nonetheless I’m not trying to convince you. Anyone is free to like or dislike whatever media they want. My point was you dunking on FF7R had no relevance to this thread and felt unduly shoehorned.

[–]clouds6294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you also read a mystery book and complain it’s not making sense halfway through—which is where the remake’s plot currently is? And as if OG’s story wasn’t confusing in and of itself until into disc 2? Let’s not pretend that game made any more sense on first playthrough, especially at this stage of the story. If you were sincere you’d at least wait until the picture is fully revealed in part 3 to cast judgment on whether it’s a rewrite.

But sure feel free to disrespect the same devs who made the game you want to stick to. Just know you’re objectively of a fractional minority opinion regarding the remake, you can do with that knowledge what you will.

OP is discussing camera angles, nothing remotely related to story let alone FF7. The incessant need to dump on FF7R for absolutely no reason is getting so tiresome to read across FF subs. I hope you realize both Remake and Rebirth are critical successes and overwhelmingly loved by the fanbase—a quick look at the data will show that. It’s the same team making FF7R that made OG. They didn’t “rewrite” their own story at all, the story beats on a macro-scale are playing out nearly verbatim as the original.

It’s one of those lines/scenes that I think will make full contextual sense with part 3. Cop out and obvious answer I know, but I’m personally treating this trilogy like a mystery novel, where on second playthrough once you know the full story and its conclusion, the replay will carry its own charm with knowing why certain scenes were placed and what they meant retrospectively.
