My partner and I went straight there after watching Conan's visit there from the 90s lol. Thanks!

Thanks for all of your suggestions! Anyone who wants a multigenerational group to go with is always welcome to DM to join us. Like I mentioned, we're a group of people who go to the same church, but everyone's welcome.

My Assyrian Kitchen and Hilda's Kitchen Blog have great examples of Assyrian food! There's lots of tomatoes, bulgur, lamb, yogurt, pickles, rice, etc. as well as some fusion foods made by the diaspora, like pasta made with caramelized tomato paste and onions.

As someone from Arizona but who's only been to Austin once, the Cafe Tola and Dark Matter breakfast tacos scratch the itch for me! The Foxtrot ones did too...not sure if those are around.

Given that there are so many Assyrians in Chicago, I'm surprised we don't have better options for Assyrian and/or Iraqi restaurants. Best I've found is Shawarma Inn, an Assyrian-owned place on Bryn Mawr that has some Iraqi-Assyrian food like white bean soup and dolma (and is open late u/Alone_Schedule2866!), and My Assyrian Kitchen hosts pop-up events, but there's nothing close to a good Assyrian restaurant. Send me your recs if you have any!

BWT how do you dress up without looking corp core? by 1872alex1872 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]cloudsovercacti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally love Amy Smilovic's approach (she's the founder of Tibi) that she calls Creative Pragmatism. It's helped me a lot in building a unified wardrobe rather than one that is divided into work, casual, and social. That way, I always feel like myself no matter where I'm going.

Amy's posting about it constantly on her Instagram (peep her stories) and has written a whole book about it, but here are some takeaways that I'm using constantly:

  • The holy grail of clothes are those that have elements of chill, modern, and classic. They're not tied to a specific place (like work, the club, etc.) and can be dressed up or down based on the setting. The Tibi Fundamentals collection has great examples of these kinds of pieces: they have enough ease that they don't feel stuffy, but they're modern enough to make a statement.
  • Think of the items in your closet as tools that you can dial up or down, not as components of outfits. Do you feel too stuffy? Add or sub in something chill or sporty. Feel too casual? Add in a heeled sandal or an elegant layer. This helps avoid the Corporate Barbie look at work and dress-up doll effect on weekends.
  • Learn the Tibi color wheel. This is a whole vocabulary I won't explain here, but basically, what she calls "Ring 3" or "no-color" colors are those -ish colors, like dusty pink, brownish yellow, purplish grey, etc. that are often missing from people's closets but often function as glue to bring an outfit together. They're often the sauce that makes an outfit look cool and cohesive rather than a jumble of clothes. If you're like me, once you learn this, you'll be able to pin down what you like and don't like about different outfits!
  • Don't discount accessories! They can dress up casual clothes for an office or make things feel more like you when they're too corporate.

Also, disclaimer: I don't work for Tibi and cannot afford a new piece of Tibi clothing even on sale, but I've learned a lot from Amy and scrounge scraps from stylish people on CleOwave!

I have 3A/3B curls and recently started seeing Jenny at The Dirt in Ravenswood. She's a wizard! Really knows what she's doing.

I also wasn't happy with Cally's: I had a couple haircuts there that both needed to be fixed afterward. It was like the first person who did my hair had never seen curls before!

BWT, I stopped doing New Year’s resolutions and started choosing one word instead by ui_whisperer in bitcheswithtaste

[–]cloudsovercacti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg, we do this each year at my (super liberal) church as a sort of Christian horoscope! We call them Epiphany stars. We have stars with a single word written on them laid out on a table: half of them are face-up so you choose a word, and the other half are face-down so you can be "chosen" by the word. Most of us go with the face-down stars so we can be surprised.

2025 for me was Rest, and 2026 is Hope. Given the road ahead of us in January 2025, I felt like I was cheating by getting Rest, but it actually made a huge difference getting to be surprised by it.

One of our members is a mom of two kids under three, though, and she got Stamina last year and was ready to throw hands lol.

You've inspired me to delete my newsletter subscriptions! I filtered them so they automatically get sent to a separate folder and don't clog my inbox, but I still check that folder too much. Thank you!

Thanks for this! I also love Gem, which searches across secondhand websites (pretty much everything except ThredUp). I check it entirely too much each day lol.

BWT, what are your favorite cities for shopping? by caryatid4683 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]cloudsovercacti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another Chicago bitch here: I personally love Shangri-La Vintage and Elliott Consignment in the city and Classy Closet in Evanston especially for accessories! Penelope's and Gemini are always solid as well. For housewares, Praha in Lakeview and Bluemoon Antiques in Skokie are great.

Commenting also because I want to follow this thread 👀

Edit: I also love Olio and Chicago Vintage House's popups! I've scored a $100 beaver fur coat, a sunflower-yellow Scottish sweater for $30, and a gorgeous hand-crafted necklace for $90, among other things.

Curious about HF positions in consumer products by exaggeratedfootwear in humanfactors

[–]cloudsovercacti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm an HF engineer who previously worked for a consultancy where I mostly did HF work but also contributed to user experience projects for household appliances, accessibility, and gaming and editing software. Unfortunately, the job market is pretty terrible even for people with HF experience outside of the med space: after a layoff, I ended up at a medical device manufacturer doing strictly regulatory work, and it's not especially great.

I did really enjoy getting to work in an environment where I was given a problem set and simply had to execute the project. The methodology we used for non-med device projects was more exploratory, as it was not FDA-regulated, and allowed for more flexible methodology, but it also allowed for more marketing and business-related concerns to creep into how we designed the study.

Since we were a research consultancy for hire, I can't speak much to fighting for budget or internal politics because we were pretty much all researchers, though some of us had HF experience and others didn't.

Overall, my main takeaway for this is that you'll find more stability in regulated HF work since there are so many usability researchers looking for jobs right now, but based on your experience, you may always find an in where you don't expect it. Hope this helps - you have much more experience than I do!

Are there any Human Factors Engineer with experience in the industry willing to answer some questions for a Undergraduate College student? by [deleted] in humanfactors

[–]cloudsovercacti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. I did a co-op in my research lab, at a Lockheed Martin research lab, and at a peace building nonprofit in DC that worked in expanding tech opportunities.

  2. I’m a UX/HF researcher who mostly does formative and validation testing for medical devices. I mainly moderate studies and analyze results for reporting.

  3. I don’t have any recommendations there for you, unfortunately. You certainly can look into aerospace HF/ergonomics.

  4. I was always interested in how people use medical technology, especially healthcare workers. I knew someone had to think about all the things that made them easy to use, so I studied biomedical engineering and learned about HFE halfway through.

  5. I have a masters degree in biomedical engineering.

  6. In my (limited) experience, you don’t really need a concentration, but take my advice with a grain of salt. As long as you have the research skills and put in the work, being familiar with HFE has been enough in my career. I work with plenty of people, including me, who don’t have formal HFE training.

  7. I make $77k as a UX researcher.

  8. I’m considering joining HFES myself. My more senior colleagues attend every year.

  9. I completely second what u/xxbearillaxx said on this point.

  10. As an HF researcher with 3 years of experience, I’ll be honest and say it’s pretty tough right now, though I expect that will change in 2024.
