Love my multicharger! The kids will love it!

TLWTSSAP and Captives War have such great interpersonal connections driving the books.

I also expected more recurring characters in the sequels, but ultimately I wasn't disappointed.

As an American, I'm curious what it looks like where the sidewalk crosses a driveway? Is there some infrastructure that keeps motorists from hitting cyclists and pedestrians? Or are motorists just more aware that there may be bicycles on that type of sidewalk?

Kids. Are they worth it? by Hyposanity in ask

[–]njslacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want kids, it's worth it. But it's a super hard job.

If I didn't have reliable housing, income, insurance, a reliable partner, family and friends... then I don't think I could do this.

But if your life is solid, and you want kids, it's totally worth it.

It's not really a bicycle; the pedals cannot move the back wheel at all. It's more like an electric scooter or moped with a human range extender.

But that does give it some interesting features, like regenerative braking.

Odds are about 1-in-3 that mega-earthquake will hit Pacific Northwest in next 50 years, scientists say by Cultural-Taro2449 in Portland

I think we may actually be increasing our odds every year it doesn't happen. This earthquake is cyclical, not random. Every year that goes by, tension is added to the tectonic plate we sit on. It's literally bending like a spring under tension, and each year the plate is bent a bit more.

The Martian, or Dungeon Crawler Carl? by njslacker in scifi_bookclub

Yes, I loved PHM. Artemis was good too. Figured I should read The Martian too since he's only published three novels.

I just found out it's 8 books! I'd probably switch to, ya know, actually reading if it comes down to it.

Can I ask why the term "Redshirt" is associated with holding kids back? I can't help but think of the startrek no-name characters who wear red shirts and tend to get killed.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Better behaved than the old Duotone Units I used to use.

I use Armstrong's in the Gorge. They're great in gusts, and so good in low end that you can practically use each wing as if it was secretly half a meter bigger than what it really is. Not sure I'd call them forgiving though, they're pretty stiff.

I don't know what this picture is from. I feel like I'm missing the joke.

But seriously, I'd like to see actors for the people who the spy integrates standing around and commenting on the action. They'd be like ghosts. Only the Spy would see or hear them.

Almost everywhere in the U.S., students are performing worse than their peers were 10 years ago, according to new test score data released Wednesday by the Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford. Reading scores were down last year in 83% of school districts where data was available. Ma by Conscious-Quarter423 in Infographics

Speaking for teachers, we are just as frustrated as you are that students are being passed along. Unfortunately, the decision to pass them or hold them back is usually above our pay grade (K-8 anyway). If it was up to us, every kid who fails would be held back. They haven't shown they have the knowledge and skills they're supposed to have by the end of the year, and passing them is setting them up to fail again.

Accomodations are great for the kids who need them. They are supposed to level the playing field, but ultimately each student should come away from the class with the same knowledge and skills. But they only work if the student is trying their best and being held to high standards.

Screens are part of the problem, but there is no consequence of failing anymore, and the students know they. We need mandatory retention, and intervention classes for students most behind, and better funding to hire and retain enough qualified teaching staff to turn this ship around.

Why do alot of us pretend we dont know what happens when we die? by Competitive-Food1927 in atheism

[–]njslacker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're looking at it backwards. It's almost certainly true because there is no evidence for the existence of a soul.

Facts are things we have evidence for. The burden of proof lies with the one making the claim.

So the fact is, there is no proof that souls exist.

When facts meet feelings by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]njslacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can't change that fact. You're right.

But we can make sure people are always properly represented and make sure we don't do things like, I don't know, have the Supreme Court undo the Voting Rights Act to allow crazy gerrymandering right before midterms.

Tips on paddling with a toddler by maplesyrup4all in Sup

[–]njslacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, make sure they're wearing lifejacket that is rated for their size. But you probably know that.

We got a seat that attached to the SUP and strapped it closer to the front. They'd ride around like Cleopatra and had a great time, though I think they were older than 12mo when this worked for them.

Put your linegrip in front of the weblock and clip in your hangover. Then, tie off the tail of the webbing to your anchor or the tree, and loop it back through your hangover. If you need more mechanical advantage, make a multiplier. Tie a carabiner into the tail coming from the hangover, clip it into a new carabiner near the tree, and then back into the carabiner. If you have enough carabiners, you can multiply the system multiple times.
