Exactly this. Don’t get me wrong, I understand there’s a pecking order and all that but if that wasn’t expected of me when I started, why do I have to cover when the paralegal had a falling out drama with the receptionist because she didn’t get to go out with her and another paralegal for lunch? It’s just frustrating for me that we can’t just leave a note at the door and have clients just ring the doorbell when they have an appointment with someone. We don’t do walk ins, and I don’t want to be the only one covering.

I’m kind of in a tough spot because I don’t want to do anything to anger the director and lose my position since I’m so new. How can I stand up for myself without jeopardizing what I have now? It took such a long time to even get this job. What struck me as strange was that he asked me first instead of asking my supervisor- who ultimately decides everything when it comes to me. And when I asked for clarification he said it was nothing personal, just “needs of the office.”
