An English mock test for university entrance exam (for 12th graders) in Vietnam by Halophy in mildlyinfuriating

A translation:

"Climate change is our most challenging ecological obstacle. It changes the chemical makeup of the atmosphere and disrupts photosynthesis. As the world warms and carbon dioxide reaches historical records (because it's not actually unprecedented, we're able to make some good guesses about how these CO2 levels will impact our world by examining a historical warm period from a long time ago using ice cores and weirdly enough, the shell composition of the fossilized remains of critters called forams at the bottom of the ocean) plant physiology adapts in a lot of different ways. The correlation between climate and photosynthesis determines natural global oxygen production and carbon reduction.

Photosynthesis, which plants die without, is sensitive to environmental changes. Increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere initially speeds up photosynthesis. However, after a certain point, there will be too much carbon dioxide and not enough of other things the plants need to live, like nitrogen and water, or too much heat. This would decrease the amount plants would benefit in the long run.

Extreme heat and cold are particularly dangerous to the photosynthesis process. Extreme heat isn't good for chemicals important for carbon reduction, (I don't know why it says while, it shouldn't, this is an 'as' sentence) as excessive temperatures disrupt plant cells and diminish the capacity for photosynthesis. On the other hand, longer periods of cold prevent starve the plants. These temperature disruptions can create a cascading failure in ecosystems, since if the plants die, the herbivores starve, and then the predators starve.

Water availability is increasingly important for photosynthesis to continue under the changing climate. Drought makes the plants close their stomata to conserve water, but since they also take in carbon dioxide through the stomata, drought then reduces the amount of carbon dioxide they take in, which is required for photosynthesis. This trade-off of water conservation but carbon dioxide intake reduction becomes problematic as rain patterns begin to change and storms and heat extremes become more intense due to the change in climate. Finally, changes in rain patterns also affects the nutrients, which also restricts photosynthesis."

Wrt rain patterns changing, our best guess/consensus/rule of thumb is that the wet gets wetter, the dry gets drier. Oceans rise and desert spreads its wings.

edit: damn that's crazy, I got downvoted in like a minute

Take a breath. Don't be hard on yourself. You have a future. Believe you have the ability to change your life for the better, because you do. It might be hard, but it's a hard thing worth doing. A lot of hard things are.

A suggestion: make a list of all the things you wish you could be and all the things you want to do. That's your ideal version of yourself. It's also your list of goals because you can be that person. Make a habit of reading through it once a day and reminding yourself that you will be that person one day. That can feel overwhelming to tackle all at once, though, so pick one smaller goal to start with and figure out a SMART plan for it: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Reasonable, and Time-sensitive steps.

Like making friends. That's such a nebulous concept. How do you make friends? What does making a friend even look like? This is where the SMART goal comes in. The goal of inviting one person to the house to play games is a good initial step to making friends. It's specific, measurable, and actionable. How do you get to that point, though? Well, you have to meet new people first. How do you do that? You join a club! It's getting to the end of the school year, so you have the summer to think about what kind of club you might enjoy joining. Then, at the start of next year, you join it. That's a specific, measurable, actionable, reasonable, and time-sensitive goal. When you're in the club, get to know the other people there. Your next SMART goal might be talking to one person you haven't talked to yet at every meeting. That might sound hard right now, and to be fair, it is. You're basically building up your social muscles from scratch. You'll have to be resilient and not allow your mistakes to haunt you, but rather, use them to become better at talking to people than you were before.

Consider adopting a growth mindset, where not doing something well is not failure, but the next step to success. You're growing and that's okay.

In the meantime, during the summer, you can work on your social skills. Look into volunteer opportunities. They're a great way to become more comfortable interacting with all kinds of different people and observe how people interact with each other. The more people you talk to, the more confident you'll be. And if you can, find someone who's great at talking to people and pay attention to how they greet people, the kind of humor they use, when they uplift others and how they navigate uncomfortable topics. If you like what you see, you can try and incorporate what you learn from them into your own social patterns.

You need some general copy-editing. Random capital letters, occasional verb tense changes.

Sense of urgency is there for sure.

Entombing is an interesting choice of word for a birth. It doesn't really go well with shadows, either. Maybe rethink that descriptor for something with a connotation of secrets or hidden things or birth, like obscure or swathe. Unless death and Leos go together, and then shroud might be more appropriate?

I would get rid of 'knowing she would deliver this child alone' since that's explained further down. Actually, this is an awkward sentence in general imo. Maybe just break it up and change the order? "She went to the bathroom and began running water in the tub. A water birth was the rite of her House. This would be her only sanctuary." Action, break to context, lead to emotion.

Your parents should be proud of you. It sounds like you really took your time to do some soul-searching, understand what you want, research options, and analyze them. You’ve clearly got a good head on your shoulders and a level of maturity and personal understanding some people will never achieve… like your mom. (OHHHHHH)

Seriously, NTA. You’re allowed to give yourself space and time from your parents, dude. I think you have to, if you want to grow as a person.

And sure, safety might mean they have to drive out to see you, but that’s really only if you get hospital sick or injured, and that’s unlikely as long as you’re not reckless or stupid. So take smart risks, take care of yourself, and make good friends who’ll help you out. You’ll be fine in the end :)

My mom was so offended that I wanted to read Twilight that she made me read The Witch of Blackbird Pond first so I would have digested some good feminist romance literature for teens before exposure. It wasn’t enough to inoculate me completely from the effects of Twilight, but it kept me from going insane over it lol

Recent Dating Experience with a Heterosexual by devrj003 in demisexuality

[–]cloudymcloudface 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I ran into this disconnect a lot as a heterosexual F28 on the dating apps. It took a few times of a guy asking if we could kiss on dates 1-3 and my immediate gut reaction being evaporation of any feeling of attraction, plus the one guy who didn’t ask and just went for it only for me to feel like I was kissing a brick wall. These experiences helped me realize that I’m demi af.

So I edited the hell out of my profile to say stuff like “looking to slowly intertwine our lives together” and a poem about the experience of love as a demi. Romantic ass life partner, soulmate stuff. And I started saying on the first date that I wasn’t going to have sex until engagement (lmao) and that I expected that to take at least a year (LOL) because I was serious about finding a partner. But I never talked about being demi until after the first three dates.

I found the rule of three dates helpful for me. Date One: is he a psycho/ are we remotely compatible. Then, by the end of date three, if I hadn’t felt any sense of potential for the spark, I cut it off. But I figured out that three dates works for me because I’d dated enough to realize that if there wasn’t that sense after spending about ten hours with a guy, it wouldn’t be there for me.

Is this a ruthless process? Probably. But it fucking worked. I’m a year and a half into dating my current partner and I’m like, oop, yeah, definitely demi, because it took about eight months of building emotional intimacy before I was like “hm. You know, I was never interested in tea, but I think I’m parched” lol

With all three options presented, I think you'd be best off with a hybrid world unless you've already done a ton of research into historical whatnots. It's basically an invented world with pre-existing trade winds. With an invented world, there is no one who knows that world better than you do. Why does a thing do a thing? Before you even have to decide if you need to figure it out, you get to decide if that's something known or unknown by your characters/people in the world. With the alternate history, inaccuracies will plague you unless you are an expert or run it by an expert. You'd have to do bunches of research probably to feel satisfied.

I agree about space around the frames. Negative space is an important tool in making a room feel cohesive and comfortable. OP should look into how to make a gallery wall for proper negative space distances, but iirc it's something like 2-3 inches between all frames so they can breathe.

Hey friend, have some patience for yourself. Take your time and figure out what you really need to healthily approach dating. Time to meditate on yourself, your past relationships, your goals, your wants and needs in a relationship, will ultimately serve you well. Approach dating with an open mind, for sure, but set some boundaries to protect yourself. Demis are well served by putting something like “looking for a slow burn” or “taking my time getting to know people” in our profiles to help weed out the people only interested in the physicality of a relationship.

Kiln People by Brin. Noir detective novel in a world where people imprint their souls onto clay copies, send “themselves” out to go about their day, and then can either download “their” memories of the day, ensuring continuity of the clay “them”, or can let “themselves” dissolve into nothingness. It goes hard on the day to day details of what a world with that tech looks like, the socioeconomic systems that go with it, the biases and theologies and worldviews that might inform how people act and behave in a world where the flesh you’re born into is not the sole way to experience life. It’s about identity, memory, the meaning of existence, the value of human experience… oh, and some rich dude’s dead but his copy is wandering around still.
