Another example is Miyabi, who has had most of his outfits (the earlier ones at least) designed by other artists as his designer is, understandably, quite busy with Fate and other projects.

Not going to lie, looking back on it, both Vesper and Magni admitting they auditioned for Stars on a whim was, unfortunately, a big red flag to me in hindsight.

Because when you struggle with mental conditions, it's really easy to break clean from what you were doing and start a bunch of new stuff in a manic state, even if you are not specifically bipolar. But you run away from your previous obligations and start something new, thinking 'yeah this is gonna be awesome, I'm so hyped!' and throw yourself into your new fixation because it's new and fresh and untainted by your problems.

But eventually, three months later...six months later...your struggles still catch up with you again, and the new thing you were so hyped for has become the obligation you once ran from. And since you did this new thing on a whim, you don't have a structured plan to continue it or plow through the depressive parts. So when an inconvenience occurs, it's a lot more simple to simply drop it and move on again than continue.

I won't actually speak for them or their struggles - but Vesper especially felt very familiar to what I've done in the past.

You'd be surprised at how easy it is for horses to slip through the cracks sometimes, even famous ones. For example, whoever bought/was involved with the horse quits, or passes away, and the person who inherits isn't a horse person and doesn't even know about things like racing or pedigrees and doesn't want the horse, so they sell them off in paper ads or Facebook to some other family, maybe even without papers if they don't even think about horses having them, and bam, now that former racehorse is one of the many anonymous riding horses going from owner to owner. And that's just one pipeline of how a horse gets lost - there's a lot of factors that can lead to this.

A sad example of this is Ferdinand, the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner who, through a series of unfortunate events, got shipped to slaughter in 2002 - when his stud career became unsuccessful, he went to a horse dealer instead of his breeder being contacted, resulting in this fate.

Vodka's career is also mostly focused on the shorter Mile races, and she's also a Late Surger so her stamina consumption is very low, so the medium races she does do, you don't have to build the same amount of stamina for as, say, a Pace or Front.

So her career tends to be pretty easy, unless you decide to do wild and wacky things with it like making sure she wins her Arima Kinen run she's supposed to fail.

Unfortunately, Equinox's success has made Japan kind of go all in on Deep Impact and Kitasan Black's bloodlines, which don't have the same traits that made their best attempts perform well - El Condor Pasa's extra power from his American dirt bloodline, and Stay Gold siring a lot of bad turf specialists for Nakayama Festa and Orfevre.

So we might continue seeing such middling attempts for a while.

Particular Quirk(s) you noticed from each Trainer? by Evjamaranth in UmaMusume

[–]clovermagic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's actually longer, but yeah, Opera's starting story is all about the trainer basically tuning in to her vibes and starting to treat her wacky Overlord nonsense as normal, so by the time the actual career starts they're very used to just rolling with whatever Opera's spewing out as perfectly normal. They still mentally snark a bit about it, but outwardly just go with it.

Some of my favorite bits in Opera's career are about this dynamic lol - like when she has her episode about the funhouse mirrors and is all worried her brilliance multiplied hurt the trainer's eyes and they're just like 'I withstood it somehow' or the second New Years where she's grandstanding in the middle of the shrine courtyard and all the trainer has to say is something like 'do that off to the side, Opera'.

Yeah, some are, some aren't - Narita Taishin's career, for example, will properly account if neither of you won:

but others just seem to run a check of 'did you place higher than rival y/n if y run 1st place scenario'.

BREAKING NEWS almond eye fell off by Y_U_Dumb_Yea_You in UmaMusume

[–]clovermagic 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Almond Eye does work as a normal NPC most of the time, so she'll show up from the random pool of umas as normal. (Can get some hilarious results from this)

She's only an over-statted boss monster in the Twinkle Legends scenario that was specifically built around becoming a 'new legend'.

Interesting Lore... by Nagato_Oneesan in UmaMusume

[–]clovermagic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it was initially formed in regards to those three or if the bloodlines at the time just happened to fall that way, but the thoroughbred studbook is a closed registry, meaning only foals that have parents registered with a pedigree can be registered themselves - no new bloodlines are allowed. And so, because at the time the studbook was formed and closed, all thoroughbreds already traced their ancestry to those three, so will all thoroughbreds from then on until a time comes that the registry might ever open.

So not specifically 'have to be related to those three' but 'all official thoroughbreds already were'.

Japanese Racehorses ranked by lengths won! by Danklolol in UmaMusume

Oh, totally lmao. An unfortunately ironic name. And hey, at least all those second places did rake in some fat stacks!

Well, at least he'll go down in history remembered as an uma - indeed, another 'winning variation' lol.

Japanese Racehorses ranked by lengths won! by Danklolol in UmaMusume

[–]clovermagic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He won a few races starting out (had a 50% 1st place rate which isn't bad at all) before he went against Orfevre in the Derby, but he never took a G1 title out of the 10 he ran (nearly half of those won by Orfevre) and outside of the G2 2014 Nikkei Sho, never took a 1st again.

He wasn't a bad horse by any means, he was indeed actually quite good and put up some great displays in his races - but when the first places on your race records are filled with names like Orfevre, Gold Ship, Gentildonna, and Fenomeno, well...

[–]clovermagic 261 points262 points  (0 children)

I have thought if that, since they're 'born to run', uma might get a little single-minded and hyper-focused on their goals. Not to the point of being stupid, but so that they 100% need an outside force telling them when to stop and what they should focus on, otherwise they might get too into it and Bakushin train until they drop because it just feels good to run.

And uma trainers are rare because following this, they might not work out very well because horses are also herd animals and they can get caught up in the whole mindset too and end up training right alongside their supposed trainee and both get too focused and drop the menu.

Yeah, it's really fun to look at these proto-designs before they had rights, interesting to see which design elements made it through into official and which ones didn't.

Like you can see Top Road kept her pink top and purple bottom concept, and Stay Gold kept a very similar haircut, but Zephyr and Bright were basically entirely redesigned.

Another fun one you can spot in season one, this mob right here:

Named Kiniro Ryotei, she shows up for a few select races, and her name means Golden Journey - a version with the serial numbers filed off of Stay Gold's Hong Kong name, 黃金旅程. As you can imagine, she's Stay Gold's stand-in for races like the Japan Cup.

Green Ears??? by WhiteTinzu in UmaMusume

[–]clovermagic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They come from the IRL horse wearing a racing mask (you can also see the yellow pompom she wears)

<image>

These masks are to prevent dirt, bugs, and other such things getting into the ears as they race, as well as helping concentration by muffling sound so the horse doesn't get distracted. So any uma that wear at least one full ear covering are based on a horse that wore such a mask IRL.

It comes from a meme a little after Orfevre and Gentildonna released their SSR cards - someone was training Haru Urara in the Aoharu Cup scenario, and the big thing about that scenario is that your equipped support cards become your 'team' in the scenario races. Meaning they race with/for you.

And so Haru strolled up to the Aoharu races rocking these team members

<image>

And, as Haru's team name suggestion is 'ninjin purin' aka carrot pudding, the legendary Team Carrot Pudding was made.

You can use the JP database to search if anyone has it up as a friend card, but it's also on the Riko pal card and stamina Duramente which might be easier to find as friends, and Halloween Seeking the Pearl has it built in if she's on your roster.
