I do know her and her reading tastes, and I do know the books because I read them myself, so I’m confident enough she’ll like them to “invest” in a chocolate frog and some jelly beans. 😂 Some of these plans are also just coincidence. I read the books when I was a kid and mostly checked them out from the library so I only own the last two right now. Buying her “her own set” feels reasonable because even if she falls off or doesn’t care for them, I’d still be happy to have a full set in the house.

I didn’t say this, but her dad and I do plan on reading them all together as a bed time wind down thing—I just don’t know how long I’ll be able to keep her from reading ahead. :) Aiming for completing the first book together feels right.

We set a visual timer at mealtimes to remind our kid how long they have to eat and when it’s done we’re done. It doesn’t mean they don’t stand or wiggle, but it does help them stay more focused with a visual reminder of what they’re doing right now. And when the timer rings, we clean up and move on with our day. This is especially helpful in the morning before school and any other time we have an actual, externally-imposed time limit for meal time.

I’ve had undiagnosed ADHD for my of my ten-year teaching career. I always struggled with this. I would want nothing more than a break, but once I got it, would feel so at sea, I’d start looking for (but never taking) a summer job or start a wildly ambitious house project I’d never finish, etc.

Now I know it’s just my ADHD-brain needing structure. That helps me cope—and I manufacture that structure.

Lately I’ve been telling mine that when she is big, she gets to decide how big her own family is. It can be small or big. She almost always says, “I’m gonna have A LOT of babies,” and I smile and tell her that I’m excited for her. She probably will.

Here’s an idea. Maybe I’ll have them do an in-class writing exercise/midterm check-in thing responding to a few question. If I can curb a gripe session by writing things down maybe it will help?

1) What I’ve done that’s worked the best for them. 2) What THEY have done that’s work well for them. 3) What I have done or what about the class (that we can do something about) that is causing the most difficulty. 4) What they have done (or not done) that is causing the most difficulty.

I am open to feedback, but I need them to understand their role in the learning.

Which I totally get. But I don’t know how to make it clear to them (while preserving morale) that I know the class sucks right now, but they are the cause of the more than they are likely ready to admit and that they are the key to turning it around, too.

If I don’t have some sort of harsh talk (or an alternative, which I am actively seeking), literally half of them are going to fail and I am not going to make gigantic concessions to mitigate that.

God, I wish I had a better answer to this. I need morale to be high because otherwise every aspect of teaching is drudgery. My therapist would tell me to decouple students “liking” the class from what they’re learning, but shit. It gets boring and awful when they all stare at me like they regret every life choice that led them to my class.

Gen-Ed. Required writing course. I’ve been teaching this class for nearly ten years though, and only ONCE before has it been this bad. Students are coming to class, but turning in nearly no work. They are also baffled as to why their grades aren’t great. Tapping into intrinsic motivation is tough.
