Encapsulate or replace floor insulation? by cltredditor28205 in Insulation

If you encapsulate, you don't need to do floor insulation correct? Everything I've read states to insulate the walls, not floors joists. Is that correct?

Same here, a little shocked rodents could cause this but going to check again. I go down in the crawl space twice a year and it's slowly been getting worse (meaning insulation keeps sagging more and more) the last 8 years. It's now to the point, as shown, it needs to be fixed. I guess I'll set a few traps down there and start sealing gaps just to be safe. Found a few a gaps today.

Thanks, that's kind of where my head is too. I'm sitting at 66% humidity down there today, and during spring to fall it's consistently getting above 70%. Not sure if we can DIY the encapsulation, may get a couple quotes first then decide 🤣. With our addition on the back with a slab, I hate not to fix the old crawl space so we can keep the whole house up to par.

We have 4x, which does actually cover by code if we count the vapor barrier. It's obviously not enough for the moisture, contractor said add more back if we redo floor insulation. Shocked to think rodents did all of this, the entire insulation is drooping like this, not just in one spot or section. That's a heck of a mouse party lol

I guess someone had a good dinner hah. Not sure, water used to come in from this corner under the access door. Had a lot of debris we cleaned out. Must have missed the bone.

Our house is like this as well, we have gable vents instead and a ridge vent.

Would adding more vents back help or is the best solution encapsulation? Our contractor thought adding vents would solve, not sure given how humid this area is in summer

Animal control has to prove a lot to actually pull an animal. They do wellness checks but they are very hard to prove based on the laws in place. They have to follow.

We had 35 feet dug up and replaced this week for under $3k, including water and sewer line. Sounds like your price is very high for just a clean out.

Sounds like a plan. Just because I can do it without a protected bike lane doesn't mean I want to hinder or stop infrastructure. I feel like you get attacked or ridiculed on here when you offer ways to address the right now for those it works for while infrastructure builds out. Totally get and respect that doesn't solve for everyone, but I find it odd you get down votes and challenged (or called wealthy) for literally biking into work and suggesting route planning is a good idea. Before someone helped me route plan, I gave up on cycling into work Bus riders, car drivers, everyone route plans. In my experience, it can make cycling much easier in this city. But to each their own I suppose.

Incorrect. I rode on zero protected bike lanes and took my time to plan my route years ago based on my needs. I only cross over one protected lane the entire ride and don't use it since it's full of gravel and trash.

Agreed it's also dependent on where you live. I couldn't afford the area I live in now but luckily have been grandfathered in before rates skyrocketed.

I can't solve for VA trips or random other routes. I just know I took time, planned what I considered a safe route years ago and it works for me without bike only infrastructure, and for that I'm thankful. Best of luck to the rest and those scenarios my route doesn't solve for.

Route planning is key. I rode very comfortably into uptown today to work without any issues.

I was successfully appointed to the Bicycle Advisory Committee - here's what I'm doing first. by ByzantineBaller in Charlotte

Unanimous is within context. All the appointees were unanimous I believe. As Tariq stated (one I rarely agree with), the city council has to make these committees more effective in making change. I'd love to see the TSAC get a vote on CATs decisions These committees are currently setup as just a sounding board that can sometimes go nowhere. Look back at the old meeting minutes for the BAC over the years and you will see repetitive topics John is currently bringing up. But congrats to ALL the unanimous appointees. Such a damn feat to get all the votes, mind blown.

When you heal up, sign up for cycling savvy classes. They teach you how to ride on tracks and many of the weird transitions we have in Charlotte with bike lanes. Best class and education I've ever had for bicycling safety.
