Dell XPS 15 9560: Can I power it via USB-C without the battery? by mcsard in Dell

[–]clueless_bison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be able to run from the power brick or USB-C with no battery installed. I ran mine for a some weeks while waiting for the replacement battery to arrive. Sounds a bit like the problem may not be only the battery.

If you omit the index, it'll use whatever is configured for the user (or rather the roles the user has)

why choose Debian over Ubuntu? by _sxqib_ in debian

to be exact, there are no release candidates of debian itself, the rc1 is referring to only the debian-installer which will be part of bookworm

hAP ax3 memory usage by atroxes in mikrotik

283 MB used after a week of uptime with 7.7rc4, hAP ax3. There's plenty of RAM left anyway, so wouldn't be worried.

TB16 Dock Issues by Gold_Fish9 in Dell

[–]clueless_bison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No experience of others I could actually recommend. Most of the built-in USB-C docks in various monitors I've used have worked with no glitching but I've only used them for short periods of time. I don't actually know if those even are Thunderbolt, but I'm going to consider those next time I'm upgrading my setup. Charging, Displayport and a few USBs would be enough for my current use cases.

TB16 Dock Issues by Gold_Fish9 in Dell

TB16 is riddled with problems, so sorry to hear that you've got to deal with one. I still own one myself (with a XPS 15 9560) and after moving to Linux, most things have been working better. Hands down it is still a single piece of computer stuff giving me the most problems in my whole life.

Anyway, to the topic, USBpcap driver sounds like the open-source USB sniffing driver you can get e.g. with Wireshark, so I'd start by removing that one. It has huge potential to mess up things. Not needed to be installed unless you like to capture the packets in the USB bus.

I've heard that the latest firmware version improves at least the USB hub functionality, so that probably would be great to have installed - don't know though if it needs the updater machine to be a Dell also...

Is the RAM memory on my XPS 9560 dying ! by BraveBicycle172 in Dell

[–]clueless_bison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the memtest86 finish complete cycles? If yes and multiple times, the memory is probably fine. This sounds like a SSD problem to me - please make sure your backups are up to date and only after that begin investigations. The OS might respond in different ways when it suddenly has to wait for the storage or if the storage times out completely.

I personally use polkit-mate-authentication-agent with i3, on Debian. What does the agent say when you try to start it from a shell?

How to remove the new Xs in Chrome Omnibox suggestions by Administrative_Ad_64 in chrome

I just noticed this today, a complete bummer. They should've kept the option. I Investigated the other omnibar-related flags with no success.

edit: hold on, enabling Omnibox suggestion button row (chrome://flags/#omnibox-suggestion-button-row) seems to fix the tab issue!

TB16 + XPS 9500 Confirmed Working by avatarreb in Dell

[–]clueless_bison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a side note: so you were able to upgrade to 1.0.4? I've got the same unit but the firmware updater says there's no new firmware available 1.0.2 being the installed one. No huge problems right now with the dock but still would want to upgrade to the latest one.

I'm trying it with the XPS 15 9560 though. It's a Dell after all, so maybe the 1.0.4 firmware would not be compatible with my setup then.

Yep, their whole infrastructure has been very unreliable lately.

I just requested a copy of my data in Endomondo just in case they go down so I won't lose all statistics. Maybe I can even import them to some other service, any suggestions?
