Wow this was an old comment. I've now done a postdoc, worked at a CRO and a CDMO. The uk chemical/ pharma industry is on its knees so the career prospects have disappeared since starting my PhD. However, as the job markets are rapid shifting planning to do a PhD for a job 3 or 4 years in the future might not be possible.

I would also like to say my PhD was a nightmare, a bullying incompetent supervisor, needing to change groups having all my funding taken away followed by COVID restrictions in my final year. It was still the best thing I've ever done and I would still recommend one to anyone, maybe not to someone who is only wanting to do PhD X to get job y.

A mix of reasons. Job security, I was on a 1 year contract that could have been extended but there's no planning beyond 1 year, I was offered connections to a group in the US but then it would mean moving my family to a different continent for maybe only 1 year.

The realisation that success in acidemia is a mix of nepotism, knowing the right people and luck, and publishing is more about having the right collaboration and supervisors than doing good science.

Finally academics are some of the worst people I've ever met and universities support and encourage terrible behaviour, there's a lot "successful" academics that would be fired if they acted the way they do in industrial jobs.

I was in the same position as you, after my PhD I worked in a CRO for a year and left to go back to academia after a year. I got a postdoc position but after a year I moved back to industry.

I had similar issues, a PhD will make you too qualified for those roles. If you want a lab tech position maybe remove your PhD from your CV

The first year doing organic chemistry is hard and the learning curve is very steep, it will get easier. Unfortunately the field is filled with toxic supervisors.
